Downtown Fargo really surprised us in how cool it is. There are so many great restaurants, brewpubs, bars, and hotels downtown. I expected the neighborhood north of downtown to be a bit more posh but it was so relaxing and quiet that I really enjoyed it, even on a rainy day. I hope you enjoy this walk around the north half of the downtown. -H

    Wikipedia:
Fargo is a city in and the county seat of Cass County, North Dakota, United States. Being the most populous city in the state, it accounts for 16% of the state population. According to the 2020 United States Census estimates, its population was 125,209, making it the 222nd-most populous city in the United States. Fargo, along with its twin city of Moorhead, Minnesota, and the adjacent cities of West Fargo, North Dakota; and Dilworth, Minnesota; form the core of the Fargo-Moorhead, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The MSA had a population of 248,591 in 2020.
Fargo was founded in 1871 on the Red River of the North floodplain. It is a cultural, retail, health care, educational, and industrial center for southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. North Dakota State University is located in the city.
Historically part of Sioux (Dakota) territory, the area that is present-day Fargo was an early stopping point for steamboats traversing the Red River during the 1870s and 1880s. The city was originally named "Centralia," but was later renamed "Fargo" after Northern Pacific Railway director and Wells Fargo Express Company founder William Fargo (1818-1881). The area started to flourish after the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad and the city became known as the "Gateway to the West."
During the 1880s, Fargo became the "divorce capital" of the Midwest because of lenient divorce laws.
A major fire struck the city on June 7, 1893, destroying 31 blocks of downtown Fargo, but the city was immediately rebuilt with new buildings made of brick, new streets, and a water system. More than 246 new buildings were built within one year. There were several rumors concerning the cause of the fire.
The North Dakota Agricultural College was founded in 1890 as North Dakota's land-grant university, becoming first accredited by the North Central Association in 1915. In 1960, NDAC became known as North Dakota State University.
Early in the century, the automobile industry flourished, and in 1905, Fargo became home to the Pence Automobile Company.
On Labor Day in 1910, Theodore Roosevelt visited Fargo to lay the cornerstone of the college's new library. To a crowd of 30,000, Roosevelt spoke about his first visit to Fargo 27 years earlier, and credited his experience homesteading in North Dakota for his eventual rise to the presidency.
Fargo-Moorhead boomed after World War II, and the city grew rapidly despite a violent F5 tornado in 1957 that destroyed a large part of the north end of the city. Ted Fujita, famous for his Fujita tornado scale, analyzed pictures of the Fargo tornado, helping him develop his ideas for "wall cloud" and "tail cloud." These were the first major scientific descriptive terms associated with tornadoes. The construction of two interstates (I-29 and I-94) revolutionized travel in the region and pushed growth of Fargo to the south and west of the city limits. In 1972, the West Acres Shopping Center, the largest shopping mall in North Dakota, was constructed near the intersection of the two Interstates. This mall became a catalyst for retail growth in the area.

You missed the house I grew up in by about a block! 12 ave/Broadway. The was a Jack 'n Jill little corner store that was just north of that the hospital, which is now parking lot. Lots of candy purchased there. Watched the quarter rich people play pac/man in the back. Perry house was on the corner where you went left on from Broadway. Beautiful home. They had a pool that they let us use in the summer time w/ their family. Good peeps! Fond memories. Walked through that downtown in the 70s/80s so many times heading to the local public pool, Island Park. Hardee's was south of St. Mary's, popular hang for us back in the day. Went to St. Mary's, then Horace Mann....good times! Enjoyed the walk! Thank you!

I grew up in Fargo many many years ago. You walked a block from the house I grew up in on 9th Ave! I went to St. Mary’s school which is no more but the Cathedral is still there. It was built by Bishop Shanley. He was the first Bishop in Fargo and was raising funds to build the cathedral when the great Fargo fire burned down the town. Shanley donated the funds he had raised to help rebuild the city. I attended Shanley high school which is also gone now. Fargo has really changed a lot since I was a kid.

Loving this! My bf and I are looking to leave Oklahoma. We want a state with similar values, and the possibility to own a home, but a much colder place. He’s from WI. ND sure looks like a great option. Some commenters on RUclips say places like Grand Forks Bismarck and Fargo aren’t safe anymore, but this looks so nice and pretty! I’m from Los Angeles so maybe its all perspective lol. Any possible tips on a good starter city is very appreciated!

Yes, Roger Maris was a home town boy who made good - pro baseball player, in 1961 - the year I graduated from high school in a nearby town - he set a new world record for single season home runs. I think it was 61. Fargo is still very proud of him. This walking tour was fun - haven’t been back to ND since 1990 or so, no family left there now. But it was fun to see how Fargo has changed. Needless to say, I wouldn’t have recognized it. I appreciate your attitude, finding odd things “cool” or interesting, rather than to be critical. Makes it fun to listen to you!

Micky Mantle and Roger Maris are very well remembered stars of the New York Yankees from the 1950s and 60s. Maris broke Babe Ruth's record for homeruns in a season. He hit 61...to beat Ruth's record of 60. Mantle hit 59 or so, that same year.

The fancy homes are on 8th Street South in Fargo as that was built up first I believe more than the north side. Plus you were getting closer to the NDSU area so not as ideal of a neighborhood (but not bad by other towns' standards for sure).

The neighborhoods directly north of downtown are rundown but if you were to walk south of downtown you would experience the exact opposite, particularly 8th St. from south of Main Ave to 13th Ave S.

This is a walking tour but you seem to be pretty much the only person walking. Where are all the people? Do they ever leave their cars and take a stroll in the streets?

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  2 года назад

It’s fairly rare in America. Most people drive everywhere and only walk from their cars to their destination. Our cities are built with that in mind, unfortunately. There is a movement growing slowly to make our cities more pedestrian in bicycle friendly. We have a long way to go. - H

Downtown Fargo/Moorhead is actually the run down side of town... All of the new parts of town (South and West) are newer and nicer. Downtown was built around the railroad and then expanded South and West.

They should get rid of that unsightly street parking. There are plenty of private parking lots for cars.
