    As a person gets older, he or she realizes that if you buy quality and take care of it, it will last you a lifetime or at least most of a lifetime. My father always told me since I could remember, “Buy the best quality item you can afford and take extreme care of it”. I’m almost 40 now and even though I’m not old, I laugh too myself when I hear my buddies saying they just paid this much for a new that or a new this when I have had the same quality item for 20 years and have saved countless dollars. Routine maintenance doesn’t pay until you have owned the item for 5-10 plus years. Wisdom always comes with age.

    • @brw3079

      I paid 600 for a used one much smaller than that in the 70s. Worked flawlessly for decades, then the movers dropped it off the truck, full of tools, onto its castor. It took a whole lotta beating with a small sledge to get it so sit even on the floor again. It needed some weld repairs, but I don't have a welder, so I bolted it back together. It's not pristine any more, but neither am I. The wrinkles and lines on my face tell the story of my life, like the scars on my toolbox.

    My grandfather would say you got "more money than brains" -- at $8k I could buy 14 US general boxes form Harbor freight ($599) -- or 1 US general box from harbor freight and an old JD400 backhoe or old used dump truck. When I used to watch the Old Yankee Workshop with Norm -- my dad - who actually was an old yankee carpenter used to laugh because no old yankee would ever spend that amount of money Norm did in his workshop.
    This is a great channel and I enjoy it very much but hopefully people realize that whats being shown here is at the high end of the spectrum and that a real homesteader is likely have to make due with much less in equipment or money --- in fact we need to come up with a new name to describe Wranglerstar - professional homeowner/homesteader doesn't seem to do it justice -- we used to have a term called Gentlemen farmer back here in the East; maybe wranglerstar should call himself a Gentleman Homesteader

    Who would even spend $1700 on a box like this?

  • @smithbeee
    @smithbeee 2 года назад +3

    Nice box! FYI: If the only reason for wanting to change the wheels to the ones that come on the Epiq's is for the swivel factor, you can just order two more of those swivel wheels you have on there now and install them where the non-swivel wheels are. I did the same thing on my masters KRL1023, so now all 4 wheels swivel. The part number for your swivel wheels are on a white sticker underneath the box on the wheel bracket. That way you only have to buy 2 more wheels instead of 4. If you just like the Epiq wheels better, then thats a whole diff story, and thats fine too :) Do a video of the wheel swap whichever way you decide to go! It's def a good upgrade to the box! Oh, and the easiest way to install the new wheels is to get a 29" long piece of 2x4 wood and put it across the bottom, front to back, so it sits across the "frame rails" under the box on the side you want to swap the wheels, then get a jack and put it under on the 2x4 and jack it up, and it will lift the box evenly. Thats the only way I could figure to do it, with my box weighing 900 pounds empty.

    Definitely a great deal on that box and well worth it for $1700, But personally I could never justify spending that much on tool storage. The toolbox simply holds the tools while your not using them. Why not spend all that money on the tools themselves that are what actually do the job and get things done. Buying a $150 snap on ratchet that you are gonna use all the time and need it to perform when your upside down under your car seems a lot more justifiable than spending thousands on a toolbox that sits against the wall and just holds your tools.

    just a fyi, for locks dont use a wet lubricant, the dirt and grime will eventually ruin the tumblers, use a dry graphite lube instead, if its already been gummed up, toss it in some simple green or purple power to dissolve the crud and let dry

    • @alexanderrankin8365
      @alexanderrankin8365 2 года назад +7

      As a locksmith I disagree. In my experience graphite causes my more problems than benefit. If it is exposed to any previous lubricant or moisture it cakes and causes friction on the pins and springs. I recommend triflow. It is a light lubricant with Teflon in suspension. When the liquid lube dries the Teflon keeps lubricating.

    • @Ma77riK
      @Ma77riK 2 года назад +1

      @@alexanderrankin8365 haven't heard of triflow, i work on automotive locking mechanisms and frequently run into gummed up tumblers from people who use wd or pb as a last resort, moisture is the bigger problem, once moisture interacts with a wet lube its properties change, while graphite lube dries into, well graphite, it seems to last longer imo, if the Teflon is unperturbed after the water dried i could see it working but i would be concerned with grime sticking, but since you've recommended it i will give it a try for the sake of giving it a try.

    That's a beauty! I'm looking for storage/organization solutions for my home, and am discovering that finding good quality storage of any kind is hard these days. There's a lot of cheap particle board junk out there. As for the great deal that you got goes, I can relate. Some people just have to haggle, and I do, but when the price is right, I just pay up and go like you did. I bought a 20 year-old Pink Paisley Fender Telecaster a few years ago that I found on Craigslist. When the guy pulled it out of the case and handed it to me I was stunned at how mint it was. I played it, and when it came time to make the deal I said, "Your asking price is more than fair for a guitar in this condition" and handed over the money. It's great to get a great deal on a great item.

I bought a Epiq 68 inch box with a classic 78 trade in and for it for $4500 out the door. Not too bad considering I paid $1800 for the classic with a student discount. Maybe for tools I would understand... but when all you would need, in theory, is a bunch of drawers on wheels with a tough surface and handles to hold your stuff, that's overkill and money that could definitely be spent more wisely elsewhere.
