Nice video! I hope you have an opportunity to discuss how to handle the finished soaps, including when to wrap them, shelf life, how to handle hazing, etc. Last weekend, I was beveling a soap, and it hazed as I was working on it, and that just freaked me out. It kept coming back, too. I ended up spraying it with alcohol and rewrapping it before it evaporated, but now I am afraid to take the wrap off to see if it ok! Soap drama at its finest! Any suggestions?
Spraying with alcohol is extremely helpful, as is putting it in front of a fan for a bit- I usually do both. I usually spray it with 91-99% RA, rather than 70% due to the extra water content, and I spray it every few hours before I wrap. I live in Florida, so I have to really stay on top of glycerin dew- if that is indeed what's hazing your soaps. What are you wrapping with? I am used to a clear wrap and can see when it is dewing up. What ever you use, you want it to be airtight. so it's not exposed to humidity. Other things that can cause that problem are overheating your base, adding too much fragrance oil or other oils, or even the type of base itself. I do plan on doing a "troubleshooting" video, but that will be a while, as I have a ton of things on the docket. Soap doesn't really have a shelf life, it may lose fragrance or fade a bit, but as a usable soap it should be usable for many years, if not forever- as long as you are not including additives that can rot- which shouldn't be used anyway (ex, lavender buds). I went through your list of potential causes, and I think the culprit was the heat and humidity that day, which was worsened by the fact that I had a double boiler going most of that afternoon. My soap 🧼 room is nearly ready to move into, and I have a fan and dehumidifier in there. Anyway, thanks a million for the advice! I am really enjoying the videos you have been posting! Hi, and thank you for subscribing! Great question! There are 2 reasons. One has to do with filming for videos, as the clarity doesn't pick up well on camera, and spritzing it helps that a lot. The second reason has to do with glycerin dew, or "sweating". I live in Florida, and it's extremely humid, which can cause pretty significant sweating. I'm in the habit of spritzing my soaps with rubbing alcohol to help remove the excess water and sort of "cure" or dry the soaps out a little, and after I put them in front of a fan and spritz every few hours if it's an extra humid day. That process also hardens the bar slightly and will help it to last a little longer for the consumer. I hope that helps and please feel free to ask more questions as they arise. Thanks again! 🙂❤
