- "Acts of God! Natural Disasters - all phrases we hear so often.. but does nature cause diasters, or do we do as a society?", asks Dr Emmanuel Raju, a social scientist working to untangle the drivers of disasters through research and teaching in international development and disaster risk management, and makes us realise the roles humans have in the disasters.Emmanuel emphasises that the need of the hour is not just finding solutions, it's about making sure that the solutions reach people in the most efficient manner. Instead of blaming nature, we as a society need to invest in measures, that are proactive and inclusive. Born and raised in Hyderabad, Emmanuel Raju is a social scientist working to untangle the drivers of disasters. Emmanuel is currently the Director of The Copenhagen Centre for Disaster Research (COPE) and an Associate Professor of Disaster Risk Management at the Global Health Section at the University of Copenhagen. He is also an ‘Extraordinary Associate Professor’ at North-West University, South Africa. With over a decade of experience working in research and teaching in international development and disaster risk management, he is one of the foremost names to consult when it comes to disaster risk reduction; disaster recovery; and governance - not just in academia, but on the ground too!
