UPDATE: As several have mentioned in the comments, Starlink is not, as of now, removing portability from those who already have it. However, I would stop short of calling portability "grandfathered." Starlink is a no-contract service, and nothing is officially granfathered. They have not made a clear announcement on this matter. They have messaged customers who have asked about losing it that "those of you who already have it will remain subscribed." If you remove it from your account, you will not be able to re-enable it.
Thanks for the updated clarification, this was and is very confusing for a residential w portability user.
So if I have been paying 135 a month which is the RV plan it will just keep that plan...???
If you been paying 135 thats the rv plan right? there is only one 135 buck plan right?
I turned it off when getting to Quartzite a few months ago the option to turn it back on is gone in the updated app. I wonder if I didn't update the app if I could have turned it back on?
Gwynne Shotwell of SpaceX said Starlink is already profitable.
I was hoping to jump on the StarLink bandwagon initially but with them changing the game rules and the price of plans frequently I think I'll forget it.
Me too.
I've also been considering it, but the cost is now not worth it with the risk of loosing it or future increased costs. I've also heard that as it gets busier priority will be given to fixed customers over RV customers.
If you have no other options for internet, starlink is great.
@@JC-ut4oi Yes residential users have priority.
exactly where I am, was about to buy it, not now
Thank you so much I was just get ready to order this today, at $155 a month I'll stick with my current provider and I don't need to purchase $700 worth of new equipment. So glad I had you on notification.
The fixed home subscription also went up from $110 to $120 with tiered pricing based on bandwidth availability. My email said nothing about dumping portability which I use, but have to comment here after a year and half my download speeds are half of what they were initially= about 35-40 MBPS. In my rural area I had a wireless PTP broadband that delivered constant 30 MBPS low latency @$65, or half of what I'm paying Starlink. If they are really dropping portability, this is no longer a viable option and I'm selling the over priced gear I had to buy. It seems it turned out more expensive shooting off multiple rockets into orbit each week is EXPENSIVE and Starlink is taking it out on their customers.
I also got the email re: pricing changes that did not mention portability (we're on the residential + portability plan).
Apparently those who already have portability will be able to keep it for now. But yes, we've noticed speeds are much slower than a year ago.
@highCountryRamble - I'm thinking the price hike has less to do the with the cost of the rockets/starlink units & more to do with Musk buying Twitter(?)
@@__WJK__ I'm a huge fan of free speech, it's unfortunate it came at a cost of $44 Billion. Regarding my reduction in download speeds, I noticed yesterday on the Starlink 'availability map it now shows unavailable coming in 2023 where I live and been using it, but when I signed up and bought the equipment a year and half ago I was well whiten the 'covered' area on the map. Suspecting they oversold their bandwidth, like most ISP's do.
@@HighCountryRambler clueless, believing he bought twitter because of free speech lol
I have considered it, but will hold off. I expect prices to increase again. Besides, most of our camping sites have trees and everyone I’ve watch says that’s an issue. Thank for another great RV News update.
It's definitely an issue where there are lots of trees. If you can get it on your RV's roof and there aren't trees overhead, sometimes it's not bad. But in the woods, it's a very expensive paperweight.
I can definitely say with experience that if there are too many trees in the way, it acts up. However one or two is not a big deal. You may just get a quick dropout here and there. +1 on putting the dish on the RV roof or a mast if you have one.
I have had starlink for almost two years, using the residential plan with portability (when they finally turned it on). I have it setup as a backup WAN at the house and only really use it for RV access. This will save me a ton since I will only use it during my RV trips, and only if I need starlink. Not gonna lie they have been all over the place with plans pricing etc...I'll save my $110 a month.
Same here. It will take time, but the early users will have to pay more to get this fully rolled out.
I ordered it the day rv became available. i work camp in ohio, without any cell or internet available in my area of the mohican Valley. And.. my Florida winter work spot also has no wifi. It's been a game changer after 8 years without internet at my site. 135 to 150 a month is not.a huge increase, but the 150 sounds like a big number. We were hit with Derecho winds last june in Ohio. I was the only person who could communicate with wifi and calling on my starlink for almost a week, and I had just received my unit a few days before. Starlink has been a great thing for me.
There has been a huge uptake in Starlink here in New Zealand. Mainly because a cyclone hit the top of the North Island, wiping out bridges where fiber was attached. This cutoff cell towers and internet to large communities within these areas. Those with Starlink connections helped with communication within these areas.
Starlink hardware is $540NZD and RVsubs are $230NZD per month. Residential subs are $130NZD per month.
$230 a month ?! Yikes. We're down south in Alexandra and had toyed with the idea but... yeh, nah
@@rossr100 Yeah mate, not quite on par yet...
Like most providers they will be sucking in customers with low prices then reducing service; racking prices up overtime along with bandwidth getting smaller and smaller due to more and more subscribers. This will just be the beginning...Probably best to look at other options. The boaters who have RV subscriptions will really take a hit..
At this point, I'm so glad I waited to buy the gear for this service. Projection use to be that prices would go down as adoption went up, but it's going in the total opposite direction. I personally didn't like when they, like so many other companies, decided to basically add the RVing premium (portability) to use this remotely.
We currently have Visible (for unlimited Verizon hotspot), Boost (for supplemental AT&T hotspot) and are looking a T-mobile home for $50/month to add the last network. That would give us coverage wherever there is some sort of cell service for less than $100/month. I'm good with that, and we can make due when we end up in an unserviced area or just avoid areas without service as much as possible.
Thanks for the reporting. Starlink seemed like a great idea when it was first announced, but there were the usual Musk delays. Original pricing was kept low to suck people in and have been jacked up on a captive market. I just don’t need to be connected to the internet 24/7, especially when I’m in my RV.
We are in southwest Arizona and have had starlink about 4 months. It works great. We have the RV plan and am pretty angry about the price increase. The only other option is cellular, but that's unreliable and probably end up more expensive, so here we are... :/
We carry STARLINK and T-Mobile hotspot with a $50/mo. Unlimited plan. T almost always works.
Pdanet with wire they dont no how much youre using so you dont ge throttled.
On your t plan do you have the priority service? My wife and I do and almost almost always have reception. We don't have starlink yet tho
@Alex Ross starlink sucks now, won't even work in tx heat. Plus the raised it to 150$ a month so I'm done. Hardly ever good signal clear sky too.
We can get free starlink in ukraine!!!
Wow We haven’t got it yet, kept hoping the plans would get better. Looks like they are getting worse 😢
The problem starlink has is they can't get enough satalites up to cover there users and there super in the red on existing satalites it's why they tryed to get us military to pay for Ukraine services even thou they had been payed by users it cost thousands per user to add to the service witch he pulls in by selling tesla stock
@@trueheart1372 Uh, yea so that not really the case. First the current issue is not one of coverage, but rather capacity. Second, this is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken and the deployment is going to plan, but it takes time. There are currently over 4,000 satellites deploy with several thousand to go. As the network is built the capacity and network efficient will improve immensely. With that said, Starlink is always going to be premium service and was never intended to compete with terrestrial networks.
@Echo Sierra I'm referring to capacity it's why they projected they need 10k satalites and have since said need more
@Echo Sierra it's not close to being profitable and with it needing so many more I doubt it ever will knowing amazon going into same game and eventually someone will regulate the satalites
@@trueheart1372 it was never intended to be profitable at this point in time. It won’t be cash flow positive for a few more years and it won’t be profitable for another 5 to 7 years, but this is all part of the projected finances.
We got Starlink last year. Our youngest son was not able to complete his school work without it. It started out really fast. That has significantly decreased. He needs internet until he graduates high school. This is good information to know but sad to hear. Thank you.
I just got StarLink two months ago. Now we get a price increase. This sucks... BUT... if the service stays good I won't complain (much). If it gets worse though, I'm gonna be (more) pissed. I used to have two cell plans so I'd be covered in most places; with StarLink I'm now covered everywhere, so I shut off one cell plan to help cover the added cost. But that plan I shut off wasn't $150mo or even $135/mo.
I find it interesting how i ever survived RV travel when i was younger, no cell phone ,no computer ,road maps that weren't very good. Bought my first RV in 1981.Nice new stuff ,you can live with or without or pay up. At 73 i am young an still RVING with my wife.
Very well said! Totally agree with you.
People nowadays don't know how good they have it sir !
Nothing but a bunch of entitled kids , that's all !
Glad someone remembers what rv is about
I recall trying to help an RVer with his Internet access and mentioned a 30GB cellular plan that is enough for one month. He responded with "I'd use that in one day" and "I want 100GB per month at 300MB download for $50" followed by something derogatory. Didn't bother responding to that.
If I go somewhere, I won't have time to spend on the Internet.
I'm a gen1 residential user in central Ohio and got the email notice today that my monthly price was going up 10 more dollars to $120/mo. My average downloads speeds run 30 - 60 mbs during the day and get worse in the evenings, so needless to say I'm very disappointed with their new policies. This just ruled out me trying for the mobility option for when I have the RV out. Thanks for the info and update.
I'm incredibly pissed with their new policy, they baited people in with $99 a month internet and then increased it to $110 and now to $120. The speeds are 1/3 of what was said. So we are paying way more for way slower speeds. They get you with the sunken cost fallacy where they know you dropped $500-$600 in equipment so it makes it hard to just leave
@@randybobandy9828 "they increased the price and we're only getting a fraction of the promised performance"
so like 100% of all other ISPs.
yay.
@@FractalPrism. I used to get all the promised speed and more with comcast.
I'm a full-time RV'r who has been stationary since the start of COVID, but am prepping to get back out there. I've had StarLink residential since 4/2021 and it's been mostly great, but will have to switch to StarLink RV when I roll out of here. But with deprioritization it sounds like I am going to have worse service and for more money, to boot. Which is a situation I think will forevermore be known as 'getting Musked.' I will remain a customer as long as it works most of the time, because I want to be able to boondock in remote areas. But the innocent joy of my first few months with StarLink has curdled into enduring anxiety about what he is going to do to me next. Global Roaming? Business? Maritime? I'm betting there's no amount of money that's going stop ongoing and periodic Musking. Alas.
Haha! That's my XLR in your video! We are here, in La Paz Telecote beach now. And we couldn't do it without our Starlink, as we work "from home", and we have no cell service here. We've had our Starlink for almost two years now, and we had so few glitches with service - probably more with our T-moblile data plan. We love our Starlink and I'd do it again!
Saw that coming from the get-go...no way they weren't going make more $$ on this.
First time commenting. I love your VLOG. Thank you for providing such useful and pertinent RV information!
I was very unhappy about this news until you mentioned that you could now pause the RV service. This is actually a cost reduction for me and I would think for many RV'ers like me.. I have Cox cable at home which is 2 to 3 times faster then Starlink and costs me $40 a month because we split it with my son whose family lives in the main house and m wife and I in the granny flat. We travel about 6 months a year so the effective cost for us with the pause option is only $75/month with the RV option. I still haven't decided to purchase Starlink, because we do not work from the road and we don't do TV. Just making reservations, trip planning, my wife does Facebook and WiFi calling... So i am having a hard time justifying the $600 initial outlay , plus the $150/month for the months we travel. FYI... It is $2500 for the equipment that lets you use Starlink while driving. Thanks
Thanks for commenting. Yeah, I'd love that $2500 dish, but way too much money. It also uses double the power.
We are in a somewhat similar situation. Although we are now snowbirding in Arizona, when we get back home we might do what you are doing with our local ISP...ultimately saving us some money. Being able to pause RV Starlink with the $150 plan is key to this approach. I guess we'll see how it pans-out but Starlink ultimately might have figured out how to reduce demands on their satellite infrastructure while saving some/many subscribers some dough..?
Was thinking starling but no longer. Amazed that they don’t realize they’re driving customers away and I’m not going to be forced into these plans. I put my money into a really good cellular antenna and router and redundancy of data providers and it’s rare it’s not at least usable if not always great.
Share it. I have it on my sailboat, but haven't done many trips (works great at sea). My dock mates let other boats anchored nearby use their Starlink WiFi. Doesn't slow them down, everybody is happy.
I watched an Australian review of the Starlink portable option just yesterday. I was considering SL for when I get on the road but not now. I'll live without internet.
I put Starlink on my boat a year back. 2 trips form SoCal to Cabo and back since then and Starlink gave the boat uninterrupted internet 24/7. All the weather data and communications that beforehand cost major $$. It's epic! It's never nice when prices go up but what the heck has not increased in price the past couple years?
My guy.. starlink already went UP IN PRICE like 6 months ago. So them increasing the price again is BS.
Yea capitalism !
Yes, a new technology costs money.
@@davidedwards8940 Yeah right. I'd like to see any Socialist or Communist country develop a system like Starlink. China just steals technology and doesn't develop it. If they did build a knockoff Starlink system, only the elite and party members would get it. If you don't like Capitalism, go to Cuba or China. I guarantee you'd be screaming your head off about how unfair everything is.
I was going to change to Starlink but then they raised the price. Thank you Jason for this video.
Starlink is great for our RV, but the price increases are going to squeeze us back to cellular if they aren’t careful.
Just got rv service, not happy about price increase but understandable. At least we can pause service while not traveling. My brother-in-law has the dilemma of whether or not to keep residential service as he travels parttime and pay extra for another rv system or drop res service and go strictly with rv service while at home having limited service at times.
I was going to add portability to our residential plan for RV travel. Our residential plan is going up to $120/month. Now we will be paying $150/month for the RV plan. Just changed to the RV plan since we will spend 5 months inside Yellowstone NP and you need Starlink there for any real internet. Such is life.
Now you can’t go back to residential unless you buy more gear. 😥
Good information, thank you. I have been kind of looking at Starlink but I am lucky I don't have to work from the road. 😊😊
Also, If you cxl the service (I am) and have not had your dish for more than 12 months, you can send it back for a $250.00 refund. I live east of the Mississippi, and the service sucks. I am going back to Insti-Connect. Safe travels.
My email for residential with portability doesn’t mention anything about portability going away. Just the price increase. Oddly, I’m in Grand Junction, CO and we are not in a limited capacity according to the Starlink maps. So I guess I’m paying the price for our Denver POP. 😢
Apparently you'll be able to keep portability for now if you already have it.
We need more users so we can become profitable! What do we do?
Let’s raise everybody’s rates year over year at a 30% increase, that’ll attract new customers!
Agreed. Elon is forgetting what made Microsoft successful: price for the user base you ultimately want rather than the current sized user base. That way you can get to your target.
Don't have starlink yet but am considering getting it. Feel that if they are going to raise the prices for RV service, then they should not be deprioritized for service.
They need to do that, or otherwise too many subscribers would take a subscription registered at the address of some friend in a rural area and use it in a busy area as if they were mobile (but in fact are at home).
I am in one of those 'limited' areas. After I have ironed out VPN issues with ATT Hotspot it's bye, bye Starlink.
We have a remote wooded vacation property that we needed to get internet. Searched the 4g route. No go. Towers are to far away with very weak or no signal. Found a line of site 5g service. Company installed 30' tower and cable to cabin where router was at. Tech tested the speed and we are at 600 + mbps. $75.00 month. Works great. I know it's different with Mobile RVers so looks like Elon has them over a barrel
I have an email from customer service that says they are NOT dropping portability for those of us who already have it. Just new customers won't have access to it. Please correct as people will end up paying more for no reason (it's only $145 for portability v. $150 for RV so worth keeping if you already have it.)
That's how I interpreted it. In fact if you are an RV'r and have original residential plan with portability, you can potentially save $20/mo by changing your arbitrary residential address you picked 1.5 years ago that is now in a "limited capacity" area to another arbitrary residential address in the "excess capacity" areas. Before portability, that's the game we played anyway.
People on the FB page are saying - if you contact Starlink - if you have the residential portabilty option you will be grandfathered in. It will no longer be offered to new customers, so don't shut off the portabilty or do anything with it or you will lose it.
I hope that is true.
Excellent content. I follow the RV world from my comfortable home with cable broadband internet service that costs $40 a month... but then there is the rent. 😱. I'm too old to begin living in a van but I love watching about your world. Thanks for helping all your friends live a better life.
youre not too old, theres multiple people over 80 doing it, Im 57 and this is my first year
My email didn’t indicate that portability was going away. Where did you see that?
Apparently existing customers are going to get to keep it for now if they already had it. But new customers will not be able to get it, and it could go away for anyone at any point. It says on the website that portability is no longer available in the U.S.
I was interested in moving to Starlink. With the costs going up, I will just pick camping spots with phone signal.
I live in the rural southeast where there is no conventional wired options available. I refuse to pay that much for internet. Visible wireless with unlimited hotspot has worked for me for almost 2 years. I have one line dedicated to a mofi router and use that for wifi and then hotspot from my phone when I travel.
I have been using Starlink RV since last August and just this past week, I decided to sign up for residential thinking I could add portability. After only 5 days on the wait list my Residential service offer arrived....i signed up....now I am seeing that service wont be able to replace my RV service. Ugh! I am a part time vanlifer and would really have benefited from faster service at home. Im now gonna cancel that order before it ships. I had no desire to pay $300/mo. I get way more "value" from cellular plans that cost half as much as single starlinl plan. In the mean time I will hope and pray for some hardware advances with lower power consumption.
Cell booster with a smart SIM works in most campsites that I’ve been to. Works just fine for a third of the price.
Nooooo!!! Really disappointed in the removal of portability. Will likely end up getting another dish on the RV plan and pay over 2x for half the year when we are camping since we can't pause the residential plan. Going best-effort when we are not camping is not an option for us.
I went thru all the great so called sat internet finally got Starlink thank u god
I went fishing and camping and had no cell service for over 50 hours.
I SURVIVED. Does anyone remember 1995?
We have Starlink on the RV plan. Got the same email. We are on the road right now, and will be for 6 more weeks, on the east coast. We didn’t bring our Starlink equipment on this trip, as it’s just not very useful in the places we are going to be (read, places with LOTS of tree cover). We have had our RV plan on suspension since October. Will we ever turn it back on? Not clear yet. T-Mobile 5G is rocking our needs, with Verizon as backup.
Starlink will at some point limit the use of the smaller dishy to residential, I suspect, and tell RVers they need to get the even more expensive unit. I also expect them to add an account maintenance fee for the months in which you have the account suspended.
Starlink was supposed to fund SpaceX goal of getting to Mars. Instead, it’s a money pit. Yes, a useful service for many, but not the cash cow they hoped for.
I just canceled my $100 reservation based on this info. Seemed like an attractive offer 12 months ago. Not so much today
So I paid a large deposit and waited a year to get the system. I’m paying the raise from the original amount they wanted. So with the changes that Starlink constantly does it’s not as inviting a service as it was before.
It’s now on my fifth wheel setting in Arizona and I’m not able to use it because I’m working out of Wyoming. So I’m May I’ll move it back to my house and when I retire in a couple of years I’ll see what high speed internet service are available, I keep hearing about Amazon and Verizon.
I guess I won't be getting Starlink for my SUV camping/travels! Not sure I need it now, cell coverage good at least where I am in the Midwest. But plans to get out West will have to see what else is available!
0:49 Slight correction, RV is not the "most expensive" plan...the business plans are several times an RV plan. $500/mo + $2500 equipment.
For Starlink to do this, suggests to me that they are attempting to rein back demand because their system is not robust enough to support the projected demand. Is Starlink as good as their hype?
Buddy I had the only available HS internet in my area, said it was 1.5 mps. If it hit .75 in my area I was extremely lucky!! I could barely stream RUclips. I was on the Starlink waiting list for 18 month and finally received an offer to signup for the residential “best effort” plan. I took it and immediately began with 100 mps+!! It was $110/month now going up to $120, I’ll pay it. I don’t like the price increase but it’s a ton better than my alternative. Elon is changing our World, and it isn’t free my friend. I love it!
Thank you for that taste of reality.
They need to find a way to prevent city dwellers with tons of options from hogging all the bandwidth from those that need portability and who live rural and are underserved by other options.
Glad I've procrastinated on getting Starlink. The cost is more than double what I pay for my cellular data plan.
I want home with portability. Sucks they no longer offer it. I also don't like how line of site it is. Might just have to depend on cell with a booster. Thanks for the info.
I got mine in Mexico for about half price. 8300 pesos for the equipment plus 1350 pesos per month
Holy cow. When I was there the beach had about 10 rigs. Was there a meetup or something, what a zoo...
And I literally just got Starlink and am using it the first time tonight...,to watch this video
This is for people who have no other option. I live in the Philippines in an area where we don't get a cell phone signal. So it's this or much higher priced high orbit satellite service, or nothing. Starlink just rolled out here this month for $54.00 a month. Worldwide there's probably a billion people ready to sign up when available. Initially they said there would be one set price worldwide but apparently wealthier nations will be subsidizing developing nations, which is fair. Thank you for doing your part to keep prices lower for us poor Americans living in paradise, and now with high speed internet... 🌴☺️
It is about what price customers can pay and the saturation of users. In Europe most people have access to fiber or LTE already so it will not be as congested as in USA. USA is basically fucked by the lobby of the big companies, and they do not want to build fiber or anything else where the cost does not match the CEO salaries...
All of that seems to be limited to the US though. There have been no notifications for changes in Europe, from what I can see.
I opened a ticket regarding the portability. The response was to open the app and change your residence setting when you are mobile.....not sure what that means and if I can change it back to my permanent residence as often as I want.
The problem is that you can only change your address to locations that have availability.
I've got the residential/portability plan and it's worked quite well the handful of times we've used it. I probably wouldn't mind the extra $15.00/month if I'm able to deactivate it when not in use; it'll save a lot of money in the long run. I'll just be interested to see how well de-prioritized data will perform when I'm attempting to work in MT and WY next summer. Thank you for the update, Jason!
Our experience has been the deprioritization isn't normally an issue, though we did have a few times where speed was terrible in more populated areas in the Eastern US. Thanks for watching!
@@RVMiles That’s reassuring. I didn’t confirm, but I assume I was deprioritized at Cattail Cove SP in December. I worked four full days without any issues. Thank you!
I should have known something was about to change, the speed we are getting went up drastically the last couple weeks. On residential we were getting 100-15 down for months then suddenly I was getting over 300 down consistently. Same location same Residential plan . We decided to stay down here year round but now the area is overloaded so we won't get the discount. When I turned off the roaming the address had plenty of availability now you cant activate residential service here if you don't already have it.
I placed an order for Starlink after a week in Orlando with spotty internet. The next day I get the rate increase email. I don't even have the thing yet and it's getting more expensive.
I'm debating rather to return it unopened or try it out for 30 days. Actually I should try it out as much as possible to determine if it is an acceptable back up to cellular. I'll leave it paused as long as cellular is acceptable minimizing the price increase. I work out of my rig and have to have internet at whatever the price.
We received email that :
#1 Price Increase
#2 We can return the Gear for a partial refund....We think $250
Also we are RV in Southern Arizona and the Down Link is getting worse and worse.....there are always delays....So it Goes
We use it and have made two 1.8k mile trips this year and it’s the only solution for us. $15 more….sure.
Not offered a portability plan in France. I’m super impressed by the system and speed, but was hoping to just put it in my RV and go touring. Bit unfair really not to be able to do this as when we are away we would not be using the home system? I shall be writing about this in France as I am very disappointed. Thanks for the heads up!
We have the RV plan offered in France. Also seems the price are not increasing for now and are much cheaper than in the USA (less users probably?), 50€/m for the residential and 100€/m for the RV.
Was it not less than two years ago when Starlink offered only residential service yet many RV folk were slapping one on the roof of their rig to find it only worked within a short distance of their home address? My how far we have come. I am surprised we can even switch plans at all let alone suspend service at will. Onward and upward.
I looked at Starlink when it was first offered. I thought it sounded too good to be true. So I've been waiting for the sounds of falling shoes. The first shoe was the deprioritization of the RV plan. Now you have had the removal of the portability option. All followed by a price increase?
Thank you, but no thank you.
Goood video!!
Saw this coming, bit most people thought the price would come down…NOT. Was considering adding Starlink in addition to our Max BR1 Pepwave and external antenna - not now.
Definitely it was $99 then it went up , this so called price drop is fake. Because where I'm at we were underserved but the last couple months that changed because Starlink over-subscribed the area. So I have now pay the over subscribed area penalty. This might not happen everywhere yet but it will. In the desert not many people here. The few of us that need it are outside the small town. If I lived in town I wouldn't need this service because symmetrical fiber is available for less with no caps at all. What happened was the snowbirds came down for the winter and as many as Starlink would allow switched to residential. So my bill will probably go down in the summer till next winter when all the RVs come back. I decided to stay here year round so I'm no longer roaming in a RV.
Thanks for the update buddy! I was just ready to purchase the dish for my rig, the amount of money is absolutely not worth it, I might as well spend 1/5 of the price from dish network on a per use basis and watch movies whenever and from wherever. I can settle with my cell fast unlimited connectivity (Verizon & T-Mobile) if traveling, worst case scenario, if across the border, I'll buy me a chip for a few pesos, and still get super fast and reliable, connectivity in Baja while still saving huge. You have to ask yourself, what do you need Internet for, browsing, communication with your family and the occasional streaming ... your cell phone or a local chip will do just fine and more than enough. I'm a movie bluff and TV guy, dish network will provide uninterrupted, more reliable service for what I want all day long for less than $60 bucks a month! Thanks, but no thanks Starlink ! 👋🏻😎🍺
I think their doing a blitz to bring in allot of new customers. In Canada they just offered hardware on sale 53% off (350$can) and Canadian rate will be 170$can to use anywhere in the continent it’s registered in.
No trying to knit-pick, but I recently saw a video about a new marine Starlink plan for yachts and ships. Not that this is a good change, but that plan is way more expensive than the RV plan.
We were considering it but not sure now
Love the channel. Well done. Always informative. My company manufactures products that are used in the RV sector (among others) so I use your channel to stay informed about the industry.
I get a kick out of those complaining about price increases. In a free-market economy, the law of supply and demand determines pricing. Consumer's 'vote' with their wallet. That's how it works. If you don't like the pricing, stop using the service; find an alternative or go without. If enough consumers stop using the service, it will force the manufacturer to re-evaluate their value proposition. Entreprenuers risk their time and fortunes to build products/services that hopefully consumers will love -- and can afford. It's a huge risk and gamble. They do so in hopes of one day making a profit. If they can't make a profit, the product/service isn't viable and as such, it will disappear completely. Starlink is obviously gambling that enough consumers will find the service worth the additional cost and pay it. I suspect they're right too. Until someone else comes up with a better mouse trap, it's the only option for internet service in many areas RVers like to travel.
Thanks again for the great content!
What a great set of comments! Bravo
I think you'd have more of a point if the company hadn't received an $886 million federal grant in 2021 to provide connectivity in rural areas. It's not like SpaceX is only spending their own money here.
@@sarachapman5206 A significant amount of the Connect America Fund (CAF I & CAF II) went directly into the pockets of plenty of other telco and HSI provider executives personal wallets. Not condoning, just stating a fact.
However, the components and cost of producing the equipment (satellites, modems & dishy) and the fuel to get the satellites into space has significantly increased due to parts increases and lack of part availability. Things have still not recovered to pre pandemic manufacturing levels. I'd be shocked if an immense amount of that $886 million wasn't eaten by just getting the satellites up in the air. Rocket travel isn't exactly cheap and easy.
I'd say the OP's point is still incredibly relevant.
Complaining is part of that market. Get enough complaints and it affects how a business runs.
@@sarachapman5206
Nonsense. Companies of all sizes receive preferential treatment from the government all the time. We just never hear about it. These come in the form of grants, tax abatements, low interest loans, no interest loans, preferred contracts, minority and/or gender set-asides, etc etc. The amount of those grants/loans is usually proportionate to the investment the business owners have made. The notion that somehow the public is entitled to some sort of preferred pricing or special discounts because the government provided said funding in these situations is absurd. It doesn't happen in any other business. Starlink isn't any different in that regard. Just larger and more visible.
I was thinking about switching to starling. Now… I don’t know. Thanks for this info. Safe travels and happy trails!
Still worth it for us, we would have to give up some places where we like to stay since there isn’t any cell service, my wife needs connectivity for her job.
T-Mobile is expanding its coverage and with its relationship with Direct TV, StarLink may have coming competition.
T-Mobile is my backup IP and for the last 6 months it’s been a 💩fest. I was looking at Starlink and a replacement for my main IP , still looking for one.
@@phyllo2694 That is T-Mobile direct, not satellite through Dish Network.
I'm in a RV after selling my house, but not mobile, except for maybe vacations, until my wife retires. I don't have a problem with the price increase, in fact I'd gladly pay it if I got decent service, but currently I can't even stream a movie during prime time 90% of the time. I get up at 4:15am most mornings, and at that time the speeds are great, but drag to 1-3mbps in prime time. That forces us to choose movies and download movies on the services that allow it ahead of time, AND often because the service sees an internet connection, we usually have to disconnect Starlink to play it. Incredibly frustrating, but after trying several other options, Starlink is still the best bang for the buck. But it really sucks for the $$. As a side note, my RV in next to a lake with absolutely no obstructions, I've noticed that the dish is pointing about 20 degrees off where it has for months, and speeds have dropped since even further.
Sounds like you should realign your antenna.
I bought the RV starlink and right now i have it on pause. I am not happy with the increase in price. This is probably going to force me to be selective as to when to use it on vacations on my RV. They may see a drop in customers now.
I just signed up with Nomad, waiting for my modem to arrive, hopefully it will be better than cellular
Crazy corporate greed! Hate being slowed here in FL. Not happy with Starlink! May consider canceling or stopping service.
What’s an alternative for full-time RV years we don’t want to turn it on and turn it off we just need it on our rigs constantly
starlink cost are gonna keep rising for many years to come.
theres a reason why nobody has done it the way they did and the main reason is simply that its insanely expensive to run and maintain to the point that even with expensive prices you have a hard time making any more.
Starlink was just cash flow positive for the first time ever in Q4 and that was EXCLUDING launch cost which is the biggest cost factor by far.
Yep, it will never be profitable. The question is over the long term will it be shut down or continue to be subsidised?
I signed up early for starlink. I live in North East PA in an area where cable internet is not available. Cellular service is ok but can be spotty at times. Orginally, Starlink said they would focus on areas with poor to no internet service. Well, unfortunately for me, they passed over my area for years now. They did cover the major city's and populated areas but left the farming community out. So, I recently canceled my $100.00 down payment order and went with T-mobile service. I did get hopeful when I saw Starlink RV, but that would be useless in my area as it's not available here. Plus, being an additional cost for lower priority, I again decided not to bother. I do live full-time in my Lance truck camper, so it would've been nice, but I guess it's just not in the cards. Maybe years from now, but I suppose Starlink has the entire earth to think about. I doubt Little Ole Bradford County PA will be on their list anytime soon. So it's nice that starlink works for most people.
I am wait-listed for residential so I use my RV Starlink at my home because I live in an area with no availability with other providers.
Interesting that star link global service is $200 when they are charging $5k for marine service ! I don’t get why the price is so different. I have seen the ever service working out at sea and there is no difference
I don't RV, but you're very informative about public lands access
Thank you!
I have Residential with Portability and apparently for now, it is grandfathered if I don’t turn it off.
Thank god it's still the same price in the UK for now. I use it on my RV as I live in it
Starlink has been the best investment we've made where we live. No cellular carrier would cover use and we had only a wireless shot that maxed out a 3Mbps on the best of days for the same monthly price as Starlink.
We are able to stream, WiFi call, work from home and fully use what we didn't have the ability to before.
Yep, residential plan folks on portability are stuck keeping portability or losing it forever....
I have SL-RV and full-time nomad...$15 mo increase is no biggie
I live in a rural area and all I can get is 5mbsp for $80 a month or $120 for starlink 30-60mbps would feel so fast for me😅
Yep, there’s no easy, or cheep, solution for good consistent internet on the road, especially for boondockers.
At least many private RV parks have decent WiFi connections.
Looks like coffee shops and hotspots will continue to be the norm for many digital nomads.
Happy Camping
Was going to get it but not now. We RV 6 months straight in the winter.
They just halved the price of the (old) hardware here in Canada to CAD $350. - I suspect it is to make room for the new hardware coming out soon.
The new "Roam" plan is what they are calling the RV plan this week it says it will work on all of the continent. - It's CAD $170 a month, and can be paused on a monthly basis.
It looks like there may not be connectivity right off the bat, but we'll see in a few days when it appears on my doorstep.
They just halved the price of hardware here in Australia too. I didn't know there was new hardware coming.
@@craigalexp I haven't heard anything for sure - The new hardware is just an assumption of mine.
I use my phone for a hot spot...works great...I have to have a bit of patience every now and then with the speed but I'd rather enjoy all the money in my pocket...I'll not pay $150 a month.
We have had StarLink RV since September, we gate guard at a ranch in S TX. Hubby is a gamer and it is fast enough for that as well as streaming on 2 tvs and all the services. We definitely don't like the price hike, but everything else has gone up, so it should be expected. Before we had starlink, we used 3 or 4 hotspots using cellular with different companies and it was spotty at best. He definitely couldn't game and then you had to keep up with days you get more gigs. Someone suggested a cell booster, which is expensive for the very good ones that can be used by any cell provider. So people that complain about starlink equipment's price, need to evaluate whether the ability to hop on anytime and have internet. as with anything, if you use it, then it is worth it. If not, and you can get away with it, use a hotspot. I also feel that with inflation everything is going up...even the price of rocket fuel to place the satellites.
That's very helpful to know that you can game on it, thanks! So, there is no bandwidth cap and it doesn't slow down if you use too much data?
@@100toeface No bandwidth cap at all. But just like any other service traffic can slow speeds down at times. We have never experienced any slow downs but its because of where we are located. More populated areas you could experience slow downs at times. Its a great service honestly!
Caught a bit of this from your podcast last night. Thanks for the details!
I was all in but I’m having second thoughts… seems that it just keeps climbing. Ugh!
Love you two and your content!
Thank you!
They have you hooked. Now is the time to raise the profits.
They're not making a profit. They're just trying to minimize losses.
Nobody is hooked here. Prices were always expected to go up. Nothing stays the same. Have some cheese with that whine my friend.
Did you not watch the video? Star link is not profitable right now.
That’s not good. Some people are out there because they can’t afford an apartment. They can often make money on the internet. But can’t afford RV sights either.
