A lot of these ‘live’ songs from the 60’s are actually performances on live TV. They often were not even plugged in to instruments or amps. And the set directors struggled to make sets and props that were as cool as the band or song. Hence the weird feeling of watching a music video. Zombies rocked.
If you like that 60s psychedelia, a one hit wonder is Incense and Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm clock.

I can clearly remember this sophisticated slice of jazz influenced pop slipping onto the radio in '64/'65. Colin Blunstone's elegant, breathy vocals were completely different to the R n' B influenced vocals of most British pop acts of the time. The Bossa Nova-like "Tell Her No" is another highlight, and their version of Harry Nilsson's "Without Her" (not to be confused with his hit "Without You") is utterly wonderful.

You have to keep in mind, anything prior to about 67-68 when FM started gaining a foothold, the only game in town was AM radio, which limited song length to around 3 minutes so they could fit more ads in.
Another thing to keep in mind, there were no videos from that era. Videos didn’t start becoming a thing until the early 80s and MTV. Anything resembling a video from that era are clipped from a TV show or if a concert happened to get filmed.
That being said, it was a fantastic, creative era for music being written and played by real musicians playing real instruments.

It's funny you point out the small kit size but in the 50s it was even more minimal! I used to play in a rockabilly band and I love that form of music as it was kind of the punk music of its time in the mid to late 50s.
As a local and regional band when I was in my late twenties, we opened for Reverend Horton Heat a few times back in their heyday in really crowded hot packed small venues.
And I think it's hilarious because their original drummer had like a folding metal chair for the drum throne, and a hi-hat and a snare and one crash cymbal and maybe one ride cymbal, but I'm not sure if he even had that.
At some point he decided he didn't want to tour anymore, and so they picked up this guy from a metal band, Taz, and the first gig he played with them that we opened for, he had just joined 3 weeks earlier and we were shocked at the size of his drum kit, which was not large for metal but for this and especially compared to their first drummer, was insane and surreal, laugh. Many jokes were made about the wall of cymbals, lol.
Whenever we opened for them we got to hang out with them quite a bit and that was really discussed a lot and it was pretty funny. But the cool thing was they came back through six or eight months later, and we opened for them again and by now Taz had reduced his kit by a whole lot. It was still bigger than the one you're looking at here and therefore much bigger than a minimalist rockabilly setup, but it worked.
And then we opened for them again about 6 months or so after that, and he had reduced his kit even more.

Way to go Lee in giving these guys a chance and some kudos.. They had a kind of painful career. After a couple of big hits like this one and many other cool songs with excellent playing, their career went downhill. At the point of breaking up the band they released the amazing album " Odyssey and Oracle " thanks to it's US producer / musician Al Kooper. Every song on it is a gem, some are way ahead of their time and it yielded a massive hit " Time of the Season" but by then the band had split. Rod Argent and Chris White became the band Argent and Colin had a brief solo career.

Songs had to be under 3:00 minutes for top 40 radio. The Zombies sound was all their own. The original band minus Paul who died do tour occasionally. Saw that version about 10 years ago. Hugh was up there with the best. Mike Hugg (Manfred Mann), Viv Prince (The Pretty Things) Bob Elliot (The Hillies) and of course Charlie Watts (Stones)

I was in high school in 1965-67 in San Francisco so we were in the epicenter of it all. Another great one! So much happened musically in the mid to later 60s that reflected the war, protests, civil rights struggle that got more serious as the decade went on. Then there was psychedelia that started in about 1966. So the 70s were awesome but it was the lead in from the mid to later 60s that really started both decades of being some of the most creative out of the box music ever. The psychedlia actually allowed not only the artists but us the fans to explore where the expanded mind would take us a bit.

There are so many great artists & songs of that era, you could play great music non stop for days, if not weeks. There was turmoil & youth movements then and many of the songs were echoing the times. Another one of those songs that is great every time I listen to it!The reason why most songs were short back in the sixties is because radio station producers allowed for about 3 minutes max in between commercials and announcements for singles. Sometimes songs would have a longer play on record that unless you owned it or a friend had it we would never be able to listen to it.

Love the Zombies. Since I was born in 1965, I've listened to them all my life, I still remember them being played on the radio, jukeboxes, and by the adults I would be around. I literally teared up when they went into the RRHOF. The only downside is the song is too short.

A year or so before starting ZZ TOP, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard were recruited to go tour as The Zombies, who had a big hit but had just broken up. Back then there were very few videos and most people didn’t really know what bands looked like. They’re Texans and had no keyboard player and The Zombies are English, but… After ZZ TOP hit it big The Zombies would joke that maybe they should go tour as ZZ TOP.

There's a little known band from the '60s' named "The Music Machine" that had a hit with a song titled "Talk Talk" and it was a hard rocker that was a bit before it's time. There is a video of them on a TV show called "Where the Action Is" that's worth checking out. It's a weird mix of a 'mod' setting with a 'rocker' band. Reminds me of Ringos great line when asked if he was a 'Mod or a Rocker', he quipped "I'm more of a mocker." 😏

Vocals are a bit spooky because of the use of minor chords which so well fit Colin Blackstone’s unique voice.

This song is 60 years when this song came out and I heard if when I turned18 in Viet Nam, thinking of my girlfriend back in Florida. Long, long ago, and faraway.

      Aside from their "hit" songs,
The Animals/Eric Burdon were steeped in American Southern Blues/ Mississippi Delta Blues, which in the mid‐60's, we'd had so little exposure to that we thought it was a British thing. We had no clue that the British Invasion was born in the music of our own country. The Brits sailed back to America the music of Mississippi John Hurt, Bo Diddly, Howlin Wolf, and so many more that the early Rock radio stations had completely neglected.
      I Believe To My Soul
      Worried Life Blues
      Gin House Blues
are examples from The Animals of the Blues genre influence in the British Invasion.

Zombies, so good and the keyboard playing just grips you. Their version of Summertime, for me the BEST version. Give it a go/reaction. Cheers.

That Iconic piano sound (at least on stage) is a Vox Continental. There is some dispute about what was used on the recording (but similar). the Vox used by many bands of the era has a great classic 60s sound it easy to spot as the normally black keys are white and the normally white keys are black It was easily portable which made it a perfect for touring bands. (Animals /Beatles /Doors etc)

Like this 60's stuff? Check out Love, Forever Changes. One of the greatest albums of all times. More a whole work than collection of individual song, so it's hard to recommend any one particular song. But you just can't go wrong with any one of them.

    Yes, the 60's were great!
Have you checked out the Moody Blues yet?
They were one of the earliest prog rock bands.
Nights in white Satin was one of their earliest hits.
also I had suggested a couple of later Rush songs and I was wondering when you may be getting to them.
    Cheers
