Karst represents a specific area consisting of surface relief and a surface underground hy drogfaphic network resulting. Like you said karst is characterized by soulble rocks lockated near or at the surface. Karst hydrology is a reltively NEW DISCIPLINE if it is considered as an independent scientific branch. I must tell you big mistake - Yugoslavia is NOW place called REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA = CROATIA and ANOTHER part are also differnet republics or federation. As well Slovenija was in Yugoslavia but we all devided in 90.' Planty of researchs are from CROATIA in Florida or other countries
Karstified rocks can be found in all parts of the world but in certain region they are quite frequent and cover wide and deep areas (in area of EX-Yugslavia along the Adriatic Sea - CROATIA). In the other region they are rare and appear only in certain areas, most often as shallow surface karst (countries of northern Europe and South America.
It can be stated, without exaggeration, that the karst areas in ExYugslavia represent a cradle of a systematic study of karst in the world, considering the water circulation in the cracked and fissured areas. But if you have been thinking of the surface of EX-Yougslavia it is cca. 80 000km2 that are strongly influenced by karstification procesess but in Republic of Croatia near Adriatic sea cca. 49 756 km2
Well done with terminology but I have only mention right areal dimension and countries full of Dinaridic type of karst.
