I'm a 1944 borner from Istanbul Türkiye. There were several private schools in the Ottoman Empire founded by foreign countries providing education in their native languages during early and mid 18th ciecle. Among them were 2 English high schools, one for girls and the other for boys. My elder sister who had enrolled to EHFG in 1950 used to sing this song she learned at school during her 4th year. By the way the school had 2 prep years for teaching English before they started the usual curriculum. Now I'm 79 and it has been almost 66 years since I've listened to it from my sister. Quite a romantic song from those old days.
@@mr.dr.prof.patrick7284 Thanks, my 5 year older sister is alive & thanks lord, so am I. I'm considerably well as a childless widower. Our only child passed away first and then my 57 old wife passed. Life is funny sometimes. The general expectation is that husbands die first, though there are quiet a number of exceptions. I wish I were not one of those exceptions, alas the decision is not in our hands. Thank you so much for your kindness.
comedy probably didn't have that message but it's not the main intention there hehe music now still has that but you may have to go much further than the top 40 stuff
I grew up before tv and my father played guitar (self-taught as a child); later we had a small electric chord organ and all of us (nine children plus parents) learned to play it. We sang together almost every night and always in the car on Sunday drives. I'm so glad I found your site, with the songs I remember so well and still love . . . thank you!
Thank you for singing this song, Fred! I recorded a guitar solo version last night, and came to your video when I was searching for background info of this lovely tune.
lovely. i came here from raised by wolves tv show where campion sturges whistles " dont sit under the apple tree" that lead me to the song of same name sung by the andrews sisters in 1942 to and then here to its origin. from 1833 to 2020.
How this English song become a German folk song would be an interesting story, this can be found in the article: How A British Popular Hit Became An "Irish Folk Song" in Germany
Btw I'm looking for the video of it where I think the kid girl there holds a train toy gift that came from her father? Am I right? I don't know but I feel like I've always watched that as a kid🥺
This makes the song more famous in instrumental version more than in vocal version 😅. Many piano and violin method books have this song included but its lyrics are not often heard. I think the words are beautiful still, just need some more refinement though
My dearly departed Mother would ask me to play this on her grand piano, not all that long ago. I Love You Mom, honey.
ur not the only one that lost ur mom. don't worry I know how it feels. god bless u :)

The song definitely has that old-time romantic feel.
I was born in 1999 and listen to this music in my seventeenth, this millennium never forget me about any legend songs because they are so everlasting!
You give me hope. A good future depends on awareness of the past, especially the positive past.
Welcome! There is a lot here to see. And I add a song just about every day.
Have you had a chance to hear on you tube a woman by the name of Nino Nadiradze singing this same song? It was also nice.
to value the past is a special gift.
My daddy would play this on his accordion and was one of my favorites. Dad passed in 2018 and I had this played this at his memorial. Miss you Pops!
May he rest in peace. I am sorry for your loss.
😢 I’m sowy for ur loss 😭
Very, very nice. Just what I wanted to hear ... and better. Rich
2023 and I'm back again listening..

comedy probably didn't have that message but it's not the main intention there hehe

My grandmother taught me how to play this on the piano. It's the only song I know how to play. Great memories ❤
Beautiful song my mum bought the song for me when I was little
Stumbled upon this song in a beginner's piano book today (2024). I played it about 30 times :-) Didn't realize there was more than one verse.
I’m doing a solo for this whole entire song and I saw this video, this helped me out soooooo much, thank you

Good! I know a piano score and play the piano now!
In Berlin sang man früher mit der Melodie: "schwimmt eine Leiche im Landwehrkanal"

I learned this song in elementary school in Japan.
Here after watching Satyajit Ray's movie Ghare-Baire
Sounds like the inspiration to Buffalo Gals!
The fact that I relate to this song in a bad breakup.
Left Hand ______ Method
Who else are here after Ghare Baire by Satyajit Ray?
gorillaz left hand suzuki method
I love Gorillaz and that song :D
