    O TRINITY OF BLESSED LIGHT
    Words (fourth century): attributed to Ambrose of Milan (Born: 337 AD, Trier, Germany; Died: April 4, 397 AD, Milan, Italy)
    trans (1851). John Mason Neale (24 January 1818 - 6 August 1866),
    LYRICS
    O Trinity of blessed light
    O Unity of primal might (OR: O Unity of princely might)
    The fiery sun now goes his way (OR: Th’untiring sun now goes its way)
    Shed thou within our hearts thy ray.
    To thee our morning song of praise
    To thee our evening hymn we raise
    Thy glory, suppliant, we adore (OR: Thy glory, kneeling, we adore)
    For ever and for evermore.
    O Trinity, O Unity,
    Thou help of man's infirmity,
    Protect us through the hours of night,
    Who art our everlasting Light.
    To God the Father, God the Son,
    And God the Spirit, Three in One;
    Let glory, praise, and worship be
    From age to age eternally. Amen
    ALTERNATIVE VERSION (LUTHERAN HYMNAL 1941)
    O Trinity, most blessed Light
    O Unity of sovereign might
    As now the fiery sun departs,
    Shed Thou Thy beams within our hearts.
    To Thee our morning song of praise (ditto)
    To Thee our evening prayer we raise (ditto)
    Thee may our glory evermore
    In lowly reverence adore
    All praise to God the Father be,
    All praise, eternal Son, to Thee,
    Whom with the Spirit we adore
    Forever and forevermore.
    ALTERNATIVE TO STANZA 2
    To Thee our morning song of praise (ditto)
    To Thee our evening prayer we raise (ditto)
    O grant us with Thy saints on high
    To praise Thee through eternity.
    ALTERNATIVE DOXOLOGIES
    To God the Father, God the Son
    and God the Spirit, praise be done;
    to thee most holy Trinity
    praise now and for eternity. Amen
    To God the Father, heavenly Light,
    to Christ revealed in earthly night,
    to God the Holy Ghost we raise
    our equal and unceasing praise. Amen
    All laud to God the Father be;
    all praise, eternal Son, to thee;
    all glory, as is ever meet,
    to God the holy Paraclete. Amen
    NOTE: The commemoration of Saint Ambrose’s death (the standard choice for a saint’s feast day) is observed by the Anglican Church April 4th. To avoid conflicts with Lent and Easter, some the Roman Church commemorates the saint on December 7th, the date of his consecration as Bishop of Milan.
