@@Darth_Bateman no its definitely not a masterpiece and they are right no one specifically asked for it based on its failing at the box office. I think that they’re fine with the movie flopping since in this case their agenda and propaganda matters more than box office earnings. Kevin Samuels and the black manosphere shifted the perspectives of Gen X, Y, and Z black women in a different direction. KS is deceased and the black manosphere is in the process of being co-opted. Now they have to reindocrinate.

"Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune, praised the film as "triumphantly emotional and brave", calling it Spielberg's "successful attempt to enlarge his reputation as a director of youthful entertainments." Siskel wrote that The Color Purple was "a plea for respect for black women." Although acknowledging that the film was a period drama, he praised its "... incredibly strong stand against the way black men treat black women. Cruel is too kind a word to describe their behavior. The principal black men in The Color Purple use their women - both wives and daughters - as sexual chattel." Color Purple was like catnip for white people.

(Long rant) My bestie invited me and I went although not really particular about it. Hate wasn't for the film but not really liking remakes that much. Because it was important to her for me to go along, I went. Put my feelings aside and tried to be open-minded. Not even midway it started feeling like I was in a twilight zone. Everyone crying and moved except me. Music was good, beautifully filmed yet it still felt like God wasn't the one trying to tell me something but it was Oprah. Like be a strong black woman and don't need a man. I don't mind being a SBW, but only when its necessary and not 24/7+ definitely not without a man. Mister seemed beyond cold but extra evil. The only good men seemed to be not as dominant as the women, goofy like. I kept seeing it throughout the whole thing. Afterwards I listened to my friend who was mesmerized by the film, but I was so lost since we saw the same movie. It got worse when she surprised me with dinner w/ other gf's who wanted a ladies night out to sit and talk about the movie. At that moment my mind flashed back to all the times I saw men put in these situations of needing to talk while not knowing what to say because it will go left if its not what they want to hear. I got through it.....but oh my God😵‍💫
Too many wonderful men in my lifetime made sacrifices to get me here today. I refuse to pretend I did it alone, and they are not needed and appreciated anymore. I stand with Toni Braxton, I love me some him and it will never change no matter what Oprah and sisterhood says ❤👫🏿

I am a Boomer. I can tell you, I and many others never thought The Color Purple was based on any generalized reality.
I laughed when Oprah gaslighted everyone when she announced the expectation of eighteen million at the box office on Christmas day.
Well, anyone who knows a little about movie openings, knows it's usually the biggest day of a movies earnings. Eighteen million is actually a straight failure.
(the movie cost 100 million to make) Movies usually always decline after opening day.
I saw The Color Purple a couple of days after Christmas and no one was in the theater. I think there were fifteen of us.
You see, Hollywood has been failing on all levels for years and the failure has intensified the last five years.
I don't think Hollywood has had an original idea in more than a decade.
The Color Purple is nothing more than what Hollywood has been doing for years. The rehash of something old.
    (along with preaching wokeness).
No one...black, white or candy stripe cares about Hollywood and their movies.

I always support black movies but even I didn’t want to watch it. And I loved the 1985 version. But this 2023 version just sucks. They went in a gospel music direction…for what reason I don’t know. It’s very disappointing considering both Oprah and Steven Spielberg were executive producers on this 2023 movie. Black movies not related to the Marvel or DC universe tend to struggle at the box office. Because it’s black people and racism is very apparent. But we aren’t helping ourself by turning a very good story like the Color Purple into a gospel music festivity. Now you’re also alienating people who don’t care for the loud gospel music or preachy religion.

What exactly do black people want because I only hear you people complain at every turn. No matter what you get; you aren’t happy with it. So what exactly do black people want? As far as a film is concerned.
I thought the movie was great.

Well I don't know who's bright idea was it to do another color purple but there was no way that the movie was going to do as good as the first one. One of the reasons is it's not a lot of people go to the movie theater anymore when you can just stay home and stream it which is actually cheaper. A room full of people can watch the movie for just $20. That's a bargain. And second: it's a musical. Once I found out about it being a musical, I really wasn't interested in seeing it. Most people are not really into musicals. It makes the movie less serious. It's too cheesy and choreographed. It's like turning Scarface into a musical. Terrible idea. People mainly saw this movie because it was Christmas Day and after opening presents, there was nothing else to do and nothing else was opened so let's go to the movies. But like u said in the video. People in other countries are NOT going to see this film. No one in France. The Philippines. Poland. Germany Australia etc is going to see this movie. Plus you have Taraji tearfully complaining about it. giving negative press about a project that SHE stared in. That was TOTALLY STUPID. that's like Tom Hanks complaining about doing Forrest Gump three days after it's release. Really??? Your suppose to promote your movie. Not tear it down. Who does that???

I have not. And if it's anything that shows us like "yessim boss" I am not interested. I'm in my 40's and I'm just tired of it. It's like Hollywood does not want to see us as hero's unless we are gangsters, felons, hoes, or divested. And that's not a shot at interracial couples. It is just a shot at people who say they would never marry black men or women. Big diff
