  • Dr. Suman Byregowda, Consultant, Ortho Oncology at Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, shares important information on human bone tumours.
Bone tumours are classified into two varieties, namely-
Benign: This tumour grows locally and does not spread into the surrounding areas, leading to lesser risk and higher survival rates.
Malignant: These sarcomas grow quickly and spread to the surrounding areas, leading to greater risk.
Both tumours commonly occur between 10 and 30 years old, and there is no specific reason for their occurrence. You need to know that Bone tumours are not hereditary and do not run in families.
    Common Symptoms of Bone Tumours
Persistent bone pain that worsens with time.
    Swelling over bone
A weak bone that fractures or breaks easily compared with a normal bone
These symptoms can weaken the bone over time. Patients experiencing these symptoms are advised to undergo diagnostic tests, including X-rays and MRIs, followed by a needle biopsy for microscopic examination. These tests help determine whether the tumour is benign or malignant, as well as its type and grade.
    Treatment for Bone Tumours
    1. Benign Tumours are further classified into two parts-
Latent: The tumours are not producing any symptoms and require only observation.
Aggressive: Grows fast and eats away the bone, requiring surgical intervention.
    2. Malignant Sarcomas
The treatment of malignant sarcomas requires a multimodal approach, combining chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. In some cases, treatment may include amputations. Advances in these treatments have significantly improved patient outcomes, saving the lives of 90-95% of patients. Furthermore, this comprehensive approach completely cured 60-80% of patients.
Dr Suman’s insights into bone tumours are invaluable, empowering individuals with essential knowledge for early detection and effective treatment.
