      Lose the beard mate. The difference between beard and no beard, is the difference between a military respirator and a surgical mask. Air careens around the sides with a beard, but clean shaven the mask sucks onto the skin of the face.
      I would also note that you need eye protection.
      This said that 3m half mask is decent, but dear lord lose those exposed filters. The virus will adsorb to the surface and you are effectively walking around with two viral "puffers" on your face. Use the 3m P3 "plastic box" style. No part of the active filter is exposed to touch, they make it easier to wipe the exterior of the mask clean, and are much safer.
      Those cloth filters are good for saw dust, and DIY chores, but not really suitable for genuine CBRN applications.

    Cliff, I absolutely love your channel! But I must respectfully disagree about wearing gloves out to the store when you need to run errands. Gloves are typically worn to avoid cross contamination. For example, hospital workers wear gloves if they need to touch a patient and then the gloves are thrown away before moving on to the next task. If you are wearing the same set of gloves all around town, you are carrying germs everywhere! It is safer to not wear gloves and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. Best wishes, and thanks for your great content.

    • @OhSoddit
      @OhSoddit 4 года назад

      I was berated as a visitor to a hospital for exactly that reason - I could be spreading bugs via gloves. However:
      1. They're protecting ME, so I don't give a stuff;
      2. I can use sanitiser on the gloves;
      3. See point 1. As long as I'm not cross contaminating 'myself' (phone, keys, wallet, clothing etc), better to wear gloves than not? And 10 points to Cliff re doggie bags to save on gloves!

    • @CaptainFluffen
      @CaptainFluffen 4 года назад +6

      @@OhSoddit How do they protect? Sure they might remove the need of washing your hands, but other than that you are still able to get virus on them and touch your face. You cannot get sick through the skin on your hands.

    • @hfmackay

      Using any hand sanitizer on gloves will degrade them over time. All gloves have microtears and the alcohol will only increase them in size. This is why surgeons scrub their hands with disinfectant prior to donning their sterile gloves.
      Like others have said, SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 virus can only enter your body through the mucose membrane of you eyes, nose and mouth. So as long as you are not touching your face and practicing hand hygiene you will not become infected via contact transmission. Brass or copper door hooks are another tool that can prevent cross contamination as copper is naturally antimicrobial.

    In the UK most fuel stations have a disposable glove dispenser next to the pumps which is useful for using the pumps, opening the door and using touchpads with before disposing of them before re-entering my car and avoiding contaminating my thicker gloves I can reuse.

    Ok so I love this video and really like the dog waste bag idea, it's brilliant. I also love the setup. But as a health care provider I'm going to recommend ditching the gloves that you are casually wearing. I know it seems like a great idea, but believe it or not they realistically are not doing anything. The point of gloves is for touch and throw, use them once say to change a diaper, bandages etc then toss them, in fact it's not uncommon for me to go through 2-3 pairs in a single procedure depending on what I'm doing or touching. For example an iv dressing change I would use non sterile gloves to remove the old dressing and sterile to put on a new one. I think you should have them on hand just in case, but not constantly wear them, as it's no different than using your hands. Just wash or purell your hands and I agree when getting gas, using and atm opening a door etc use the poop bags. Just some friendly advice. Keep up the good work

    Great vid. If you are like me, i usually swap both my gloves at the same time. I wrap each pair of my EDC gloves with a rubber band or string before I put them in my pouch. This minimizes all of them spilling out of my EDC bag when I go to grab new ones, especially since I tend to overfill my glove pouch.

    Hello. I use a respirator like your's. I noticed that the bottom strap is misplaced. Take extra care to hook it below the filters. A half mask is a better option that an N95 as it can be disinfected. The filters (5 sets) are cycled and in rest periods I keep them in a sunny area of my balcony (inside).

    A fanny pack has always been an EDC option for myself, especially for some bicycle tools when cycling.

    I just made a kit last week as well, with dog poop bags. I had a few fruit/vegetable grocery plastic bags that I was using but I ran out. I use Helikon Tex Bandicoot pack that I found lying around as my waist bag. For a mask I switch between that same 3M N95 folding mask, a Buff with air conditioning filter folded in it(watched a Canadian Prepper vid for that idea), and a sport mask with a filter if I'm going out for a jog. I also have 10ml hand sanitizer spray for hands, Wet Ones or Purell individual wipes for surfaces, Elvex safety goggles for some minimal eye protection when I'm getting groceries, nitrile gloves, and a tool for opening doors, pressing elevator button, punching debit card number, etc. I use a Readyman keychain(self defense?) tool or a S.R.T. Emergency Tool and put it in a ziploc after I'm done with it to disinfect.

    Question about the 3M flat N95 masked: we got a box during wildfire smoke season in NorCal. They are great for stashing in out CERT GoBags, etc. However, now the county health officer, state health dept & city health officials have ordered masks to be worn when out doing essential functions like grocery shopping, but NOT wear N95 masks because they say the little plastic vent square doesn’t protect others from our breathing, & a surgical mask is better. What do you recommend? Assuming the recycling thru a group of masks each day by wearing the flat N95 and place a cloth mask over it?

    • @jnsky1249
      @jnsky1249 4 года назад

      N95 masks can come in either vented or unvented sytles. In this video it shows unvented flat fold ones. The statement from the supposed officials is silly since N95 does not indicated whether its vented or not. Given their logic, one should not wear a half mask respirator for the same reason since only incoming air is filtered.

    Its very strange how I use a similar approach of using fanny packs to an advantage. Fun fact I use vegtable bags and rolling them up like you would to roll socks; dispensing my dog bags from there. Recycling breath mist bottles in refilling them with either listerine (w/water) and/or distilled hand sanitizer. They are portable and light to carry. I discovered that hack myself. Using a kids handkerchief as a reusable face masks. They are small and handy to have. Having plenty of child size handkerchiefs around. I got infinite face masks at my *crib*. Washing them while showering. Then improvsing a 2 liter soda bottles to shield any viruses and pollen (seasonal allergy). For a fanny pack I use a travel wallet with fisherman's knot (note it came as a cord) to be adjusted like belt. I only contain my wallet (pouch) made from duct tape & paper, also a phone with Olive Green casing. It looks like a codex from MGS. I do have a pj edc containing my multi-color pen, notepad, small lighter -w/duct tape wrapped-, chap stick, and a bandana as primary handkerchief. I don't go out with my casual clothing anymore.
    [Edit]
    For a glove I use the work gloves. I do however use nitrile gloves but they are dollar store purchased. Transportational wise I use running/jogging to advantage.

    I’ve been doing the “masks in a paper bag” thing too, but what I do is this. When I take the mask off, I write the date on the outside of the bag, then I know how many days it is since I’ve worn the mask. I don’t go out every single day, and so don’t need 5 masks going at once. It’s allowed me to cycle through just two masks instead of using a whole bunch.

      The guidelines say at least 3 days. I try to go 4 days so I don’t have to worry about the exact time. Usually it’s more like 5 or 6 days between wears. I don’t go out much. UV would be nice, but we haven’t got a way to do that, and the paper bag method seems to be working well enough.

    I bought those crappy food service gloves to go over my gloves and or just by themselves. It was $9 for 2000 gloves at SAMS club. If I need them to stay on better, I put a rubber band at the wrist. The fingers can also be cut off to make thermometer covers.
    My dish washing station for camping has been moved into my daily driver. This includes foam soap, water, new gloves, and a garbage can to dispose of waste. The car door is opened. gloves thrown away, hands washed and then I have a mini bottle of alcohol to spray the door handle. Next step is to move my camping porta potty into my daily driver. I really don't want to use a public restroom with the aerosolized poop particles everywhere.
    Adding TP tablets and black gloves to my shopping list now.

    I don't condone the use of fanny packs (bum bags in Ireland), except in emergency situations, or where they make sense. Right now, they make sense with a long shirt!
    Very impressed, and underway! Thanks Cliff, now where's that T-Shirt.

    Edit: My mom, a war veteran, uses fanny packs for various kits. She absolutely approves of your setup, my dude. 😁

    Hello, how would you go about disinfecting the fanny pack? I would like to use this to carry my ID, debit card, phone, keys. Having to pay then putting the card back in the fanny pack would essentially put any bacteria or germs in the fanny pack. Ideas?

    Great point about being concerned with the looks of the fanny pack and wearing a respirator. Another option of decon for the respirator during the summer. Throw that thing up in the dash of your car and leave car parked outside exposed to sun. Time, temp and UV exposure for the mask will kill most things on our in it. Same goes for outside of car that u touched and some of the inside.

    When taking the doggie bag off of your hand you should grab up towards the wrist and invert the bag. If you grab the part that just touched the potentially contaminated surface, you're still just contaminating your nitrile gloves.

    I love when you Americans talk about "Fanny Packs". A fanny here in Australia is slang & means a female sex organs. We call the same things as fanny pack there as "BUM BAGS". A butt = a bum here in Oz. I may also add a hotel / motel guest soap in case you struggle to wash your hands ? G'day from Sydney, Australia.

    I’ve been using a fanny pack since the end of February for this exact reason. I try to keep my hand out of my pockets and throw the pack in the washer after a trip out. It’s been doing great. I’m glad you posted this video so I don’t feel so nerdy.

    I used a fanny pack for a while but I needed to hold a little more so I was going to go with a side zip crossbody bag, but couldn't find one I liked. Now I just use my Ribz that was originally just for hikes as my 72 hour kit. I wear reusable gloves and turn them inside out for cleaning in a tub of bleech and water. I also have homemade sanitizer. I don't carry doggy bags or a pray but I might try it. Great video!

    I got this bag at your suggestion. I think it’s very unsightly. I’m 6ft 175lbs with a mildly athletic frame. I live in the SF Bay Area with moderate temperatures. There is no way to hide how bulky this is because layers are not really a thing at this time of year and with a mildly athletic frame there is no body mass for this kit to effectively hide “under”. It looks really bad in front of to the side. When it’s to the rear at least I don’t see it.
    It’s bulky even when mostly empty and unsightly. The bulk is because of the design. It isn’t very long (horizontally from hip to hip). It’s very short (vertically). This leaves it wide and extending from the body with 3 layers of pockets each (rear pocket, the main pocket, and the side by side extra pockets with the zip and Velcro) extending farther and farther from the body.
    I’ll be donating this when things return to normal and looking for an option that isn’t a fanny pack. So far using cargo pockets works just fine for the most critical things (spare mask, gloves, spare gloves, bags, sanitizing wipes, multi tool).
    Currently looking at some small sling options to replace this. The fanny pack as a sling look is as embarrassing as a fanny pack as a fanny pack look, So purpose built sling it is.
