I spent some time in jail and an inmate loaned this book to me, which when I left I forgot to return it. During my stay I’ve read this book 4 times and it’s impacted my life dramatically but not as I had hoped. The book is actually sitting atop of my Brittanica book case. After getting out and having my first experience of freedom I sort of lost my drive. Find Debbie to be an inspiration and a lot of what she says is meaningful. It’s good to remember her from time to time. Sounds selfish to say that it gives me strength to think of her. I suppose that is why I am here.

I gave her book The Dark Side of the Light Chasers to my nephew while he was an inmate. And why good people do bad things. They are both good reads and have many helpful exercises in embracing all the things about ourselves we don't like, hide, reject or don't believe in. Best wishes to you.

Yes, I have literally only discovered Debbie Ford this week: the book on dark side (1998). Am just dipping in to a section at a time: and becoming aware .... It's good one can do it on one's own! 😄

Great talk about human shadows. I really enjoyed it.
"When you are abusing someone psychologically you are just projecting your own darkness onto them"

I believe sometimes when other people's bad behavior irritates us, such a rudeness, it is simply an observation of something that is out of alignment with our own value system and not necessarily a projection. By claiming it a projection could cause undue guilt and creating a new shadow that really doesn't belong to us.

    • @smartcatcollarproject5699
      @smartcatcollarproject5699 7 лет назад +1

Maybe not a projection, but it is still possible you are blocking, rejecting a part of yourself that could be useful in some - unusual or extreme - instances ? Even if the people with behaviors you dislike are not acting appropriately, and you should not adopt their values.
Violence comes to mind, if come under attack from someone or some animal, it can sometimes help to show some sane powerful aggressive attitude, even if it's only for the show, as attack is often the best defense ?

Thinking about that again, I agree that Ford's approach, to "embrace" everything you are scared of, everything you don't like, may be too direct, undifferentiated.
Reading other texts, like Robert A. Johnson, there is clearly a work to do, an ethic dimension that you should keep with you when you start interacting with your own shadow and archetypes in dreams and active imagination. Not just accepting any behavior, but trying to start a dialogue, hear what the message is, although these characters can be very rude or aggressive sometimes, at least at the beginning.
I don't know what Jung's methods were, though or there is really a "way to go" in this matter...

@@smartcatcollarproject5699 I studied and trained with Debbie Ford, this interview only scratches the surface of the topic and her teachings. Her shadow processes are very deep, based on Jung's teachings, and go into interaction, dialogue, message, acceptance, and integration. Very powerful and transformative work. Wish yo the best in your exploration of the topic.

Dunno if anyone will read this soon as my question has to do with the recent shootings in Charleston... So often when a Christian is murdered, we hear that the survivors forgive them, as is the case in Charleston. I'm particularly taken with the statement by family members that there's no room in their hearts for hate. So I guess my question is... how does Debbie's shadow work relate to the Charleston murders in the context of hate and love and condemnation and forgiveness. Can a Christian embrace or own hate in order to forgive? And if so, how would they do it?
I'm not Christian. But I'm coming at this observation from the standpoint that forgiveness may not be the healthiest tenet if it's only a survival mechanism that masks darkness. Or if it's just a way to control emotions. Isn't anger a part of the grieving process?
I guess that would be my overall question: Are Christians who forgive denying their shadow? Or are they walking away from darkness unscathed?

+Betty Spinks I am just seeing your comment but I think it is so spot on and insightful. I asked myself the same question when they immediately extended forgiveness. I have often wondered if one day their pain would just well up and cause them to wonder where it all came from.
I don't think Christians or people who forgive are denying their shadow but I do think that when they/we refuse to feel other emotions such as hate, anger, shame those emotions can show up in our lives on other ways.
I have personally realized that like grief, forgiveness is a process and whenever I have rushed to get over something I have never fully healed. It always came back. Maybe in the form of comfort food, or sadness, or unexplained anger. I sense that what we repress eventually does come to the surface and sometimes we need to feel the tough emotions and let our hearts break in order to heal.

I think Jesus telling Peter he'd deny him 3 times was an example of him saying, "Dude, you've got a shadow."

In Ireland, in Northern Ireland, a man forgave those who had murdered his daughter (in a bomb on Remembrance Sunday); and he became a beacon of forgivenes throughout the island. His work in building bridges may have helped him possibly in the grieving process (I don't know); but what he and his family have done in showing another way: their humanness and forgivenes and courage ... I don't know what words can be placed on that. He was an important part of the long path to peace here. We're still working on it.
      His name was Gordon Wilson.
