NEW ❄️ Cold Hardy CITRANDARIN Hybrid 🍊Satsuma x Trifoliate Cross • SEEDLESS 🍍Pineapple Flavor • 🥶

- Come along as we take a slice out of this rare and new hybrid cold hardy citrus, the miho wase satsuma mandarin crossed with a poncirus trifoliatta. Satsumas are already really cold hardy to the low teens once established, but now with a touch of wild trifoliate orange, possible cold tollerance now of atleast 0 F if not SUB ZERO!!! That would be amazing but only time and a guenea pig tree to test it out would tell us if it really can survive sub zero. Thanks for tuning in!!

If you want to sell any of the seeds of this new "pineapple" Satsuma I'll buy right now!
@@gene5251969 i actually only got 3 seeds from all of these fruit, but i do have the us-852 still at the moment for sale on the site. im hoping to get some trees of the pineapple citrandarin in the near future and hopefully might have a few fruits here and there that we could possibly offer.
@@toughcitrus bummer, I already have 852 seeds and 10 degree tangerine seeds you sent me, waiting patiently for them to sprout
@@gene5251969 that’s awesome!! Thank you 🙏 will keep ya posted if I add any new varieties to the site. I have some plans though for this spring 🤔
Just got my us-852 seeds! Also thanks for the BONUS dunstan citrumelo seeds!!
I’m glad I found your channel - cold hardy is the way to go
I’m glad too, welcome 💪🍊
Yay for backyard gardeners getting a win in the breeding of new varieties!
Absolutely 💪🍊
Super promising! I'd love to get some budwood of that one.
💪🍊 really promising brother, and such a unique flavor and nice thicker skin than the us852. Definitely worth having in the collection 🌱👍
In southern states, citrus budwood has to be ordered from a certified repository in California. Florida and Texas no longer offer repositories. They don't allow imports, bc of citrus greening.
Super cool. They sound delicious. We received your seeds! All looked perfect and are ready in the grow room.
They taste amazing 💪🍊 thank you once again 🙏 keep me posted on your baby tough citrus trees 🌱
Fantastic! Thanks for the news on this new citrandarin variety!
Absolutely 💪🍊
Loving how more citrandarin varieties are becoming accessible and keep tasting better! I think as a class of trifoliate hybrids they are the best in terms of hardiness and flavor.
Awesome video, can't wait to try the 'Dole' citrandarin.
I totally agree!!! I have another video coming soon on the us942 which I think is the best of the citrandarins so far. I think for cold hardy and for flavor, citrandarins are the way to go 💪🍊 thanks for watching brother!! Hopefully I can help get this variety out there once I can get my hands on some bud wood or any small trees. Dole citrandarins!!!
@@toughcitrus can't wait to see it! Madison Citrus Nursery was able to send us a small fruit to sample as well, and to my surprise you could actually even peel the US-942! I hope 'Dole' becomes accessible in the future, we would love to try one/add it to the collection as well. Keep up the good work!
@@themulberries that’s awesome you were able to try the fruit of 942. The skin on it is very similar to mandarin skin and not like other trifoliate that have a thin tough skin like 852. I was shocked how good it tasted
Incredible intro bro!!!!!
Thanks brother, I appreciate that. It’s old video from the miss Florida citrus event!! Lots of excitement in the grove, bringing back that excitement 💪🍊
Yeah the intro is nice
@@porchlightgardener thank you 🙏
Spectacular!
🙏much love 💪🍊
Wow, hope you’ll have those seeds available in the future 🤣
Me too 💪🍊 seedless is nice, but doesn’t help much in that department though
I know right? But all the future possibilities with that one, real exciting!
@@jamesgresham2090😁 I dream about those possibilities, stay up late doing research and making notes, future crosses and what would I name them, lol. I nerd out over this kinda thing, we need a cold hardy blood orange trifoliate!!! Dragon blood 🐉 snow dragon, I could go on and on 💪🍊
Omg my mouth actually tingled when you taste tested that juice in the glass.
Excellent video my friend 😀
💪🍊
Lol, it was amazing bro. Like pineapple dole orange juice 💪🍊
You make deciding what to put in my backyard orchard really difficult in the best way possible.
Lmfao, I’m sorry 💪🍊
We need this. I have rootstock that survives freezing days. I might crossbreed it in the future. A lot of good citrus trees have died in my area.
Amazing. I'm glad I got my hands on a Bishop and grafted over the summer. Now I need this miho x tri as well 🤤
That’s awesome brother!!! Hoping to get some of these grafted as well and maybe a bishop graft. I got some seeds sprouting of the bishop but needs some trees now 💪🍊 Bishop and this pineapple are developed from the same breeder 😁
Розмножуйте цей дивовижний сорт...❤
The Bishop cross sounds pretty good too.
I probably could grow that type of hybrid tree in my zone 7A very well! It being crossed with a Satsuma. They are zone 8A citrus trees.
The citrandarins are definitely more of a zone 7 citrus since they can handle zero degrees without major damage. If your able to get any types of citrandarins, should do good 💪🍊
@@toughcitrus If you know of anyone or if you are planning on growing this type of Hybrid Citrus..... I would definitely love to buy one from you or seed.
@@JT-ok6re I will definitely keep you posted. We have US852 seeds for sale at the moment on the site and I’m hoping if things work out I can offer 5 different citrandarin varieties that should all do good for you in zone 7. That’s the goal for now 💪🍊
@@toughcitrus You definitely got my attention when you said that it tastes like a pineapple!
I have a pineapple orange tree i wonder if the taste is similar
I have tasted pineapple oranges down here in Florida and they taste very different. Pineapple oranges really just taste similar to other juicing oranges with a slight grapefruity flavor. That’s from the ones I had. I was really hoping to taste pineapple in it. This citrandarin has trifoliate in it which gives it a totally unique flavor, it almost taste like pineapple up front followed by an orangey aftertaste with a slight grapefruit flavor. It actually smells like pineapple once you cut it
Great Review 😁
Thank you, I appreciate you stopping by 💪🍊
This looks so very good.
Really fantastic fruit with almost no seeds. Can you get any wood to graft. Would love to buy a stick and graft it on to some Korean poncirus. Thank you for the comparison. I wonder how the seedless pineapple citrandarin crossed with the 10 degree tangerine or even the Thomasville citrangequat. Like the juicy one. Such a good fruit.
@@donniechilo3966 I’m hoping that come spring I might be able to work something out and get some budwood and maybe a seedling 🌱 it would be a great parent to breed, Thomasville would give it more production for sure and possibly everbearing. This one make me think of all the cool cold hardy citrus types that could come from it
Me too. It sounds so worthwhile and fun!
Please keep me in your loop. I like your videos. Very descriptive to the point I can almost taste the fruit.
@@donniechilo3966 thank you, I definitely will let ya know. I appreciate the support and you watching and leaving comment 💪🍊 much love
I should experiment with mixing Satsumas and Trifoliate, I had no idea that they could turn out so good, as a matter of fact, I might have an even better idea.
Absolutely 👍 I think trifoliate and satsuma are great cold hardy parents. Would be cool to get one with thick peel-able skin. Curious what you come up with!!
@@toughcitrus Easy to peel should be easy, yet thick skin, that could be tricky, both Satsumas and Trifoliate are thin skinned. what I was thinking of using is thin skinned also. What I had in mind would make bigger fruit, possibly much bigger fruit. There is a variety of lemon that is rumored to be almost as cold hardy as Improved Meyer, and it has a very thick skin, it is a lot like a real lemon too. If I could manage to get this very hard to get lemon, maybe that could work.
@@alanmercieca3086 do you remember the name? Ichang lemon, taiwanica lemon, yuzu…..
@@toughcitrus 'Zagara Bianca' is rumored to be able to survive -5C (23F), it's a lemon variety with a long history in the Amalfi coast, and in Sicily. It's also famous in Provence, France under the name ‘Limon Citrus Lunaria’. It's the second most famous lemon in the Amalfi coast.
@@alanmercieca3086 that’s sounds amazing!!! Some rich history with that one 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋
Awesome! Looks nice. We need to meet up one day. I see you’re very dedicated to citrus. I love lemons and sweet oranges, but I get into rare fruits like sea berries, Chilean wine palm, Che berries, paw paw, Korean dogwood fruit tree, etc.
Absolutely!!! I like all of those and more also. I been into permaculture and food forests for about 13 years now and planted more fruit trees that I can count that aren’t citrus. I recently added 5 varieties of Florida peach low chill hours, plus a bunch of different cold hardy avocados and bananas. Not to mention everything we did to our Tennessee property before we sold it. Cold hardy citrus especially the trifoliate types should be an entire industry in itself and nobody even knows about them. I still have a list of varieties I have hard hard times trying to get and fruits of trifoliate varieties I have read about or seen but yet to try. Huge void when it come to tough citrus. Just getting the info out there and shining light on these types is more than what is currently available now. Frustrating when you look for info on something or even a whole group of some things and there’s nothing other than a few bits here and there. Just filling the gap, lol. That’s what she said 💪🍊
Pioneer!!!!!
💪🍊 much love brother 👍💡
We need these in europe too!
I agree, I think the more we know about these cold hardy citrus types the easier it will be to convince our local nursery to start carrying some. They know there is a big citrus breeding facility and nursery in Czech
@@toughcitrus do you happen to know their name? Would be great to see if they ship to my country :)
@@wiebe5028 I don’t, but I remember Stan McKenzie mentioning it. I will see if I can find but you may be able to search for them online
I'm always so excited to see your videos pop up in my subscriptions!
Are there a lot of people breeding cold hardy citrus at the citrus expo?
That is awesome 💪🍊 actually there wasn’t very many breeders there. I think he was the only one that had a special cross that was in the expo citrus contest. I noticed the fruit and was really excited on the table, I had to know who’s it was since I never heard of a miho x trifoliate
@@toughcitrus That's too bad! It seems like citrus in general is pretty easy to hybridize and clearly has a lot of cold hardy potential. I'm excited to grow citrus when I have space sometime!
@@petekooshian5595 it really does have a lot of potential especially these cold hardy tough citrus types
Some types of blood oranges are seedless. One type of blood orange is a cross between a Grapefruit and an orange. The other is from Navel oranges from a mutation on the branches, as these are seedless.
It’s like the meat cleaver was made for those oranges!🎉
Lol, it works perfect 🔪🍊
How does it compare to a Citsuma? This should usable for further breeding then i expect. Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
If your talking about the Leningrad chimera that is called a citrondarin and trifoliate satsuma…. This pineapple citrandarin is better. I tried the trifoliate satsuma chimera and it really tasted of trifoliate with a weird twist. I think they are both great for breeding, but I did get to try that weird chimera from the Soviet Union and it didn’t taste as pretty as it looks
Interesting so we are both talking about the Citsuma Prague (i still assume). This New variety sounds epic
This one (Viriginia fruit grower)
ruclips.net/video/Kl5XNx1SWzY/видео.htmlsi=sXWqYaA6VMlmTbVx
@@wichertkalkman7024 well, there is a Prague chimera and also a Leningrad chimera. The Prague taste really good, the Leningrad taste very trifoliate
@@toughcitrus i think i heard about the Leningrad once but i wasn't sure.
He should submit them to CCPP!
Definitely 👍
When I tasted it back in Nov I was impressed, less poncirus taste vs 852, a little more sour, and completely seedless. Seems to be the most promising to cross for 1/4 trifoliate crosses.
Where did you find a bishop citrandarin?
Yeah it was cool seeing this new cross there and getting to try it with you guys. It wasn’t until i had a few more that I really got a feel for how it tastes. Definitely perfect for those 1/4 trifoliate crosses, amoa 8 would be cool and give it that blood color, even a ruby grapefruit 🤔
He sent me a few bishop 852 when he sent the miho cross fruits.
@@toughcitrus that’s awesome! I’ve found that 1/8-1/4 of 852 F2 generations have variable leaf shape compared to the parent! Hopefully variable qualities of the fruit too. I think Bishop however may be a good point to start with just nucellar seedlings.
@@ross2398 your right, i noticed a few of the us852 has variable leaves. i noticed that the dunstan citrumelo seedlings and sacaton seedlings about 5 to 8% of them have monofoliate leaves and some degree of bifoliate leaves. im really hoping that the handful of those that are leaning more towards the grapefruit parent with leaves also leans that way with fruit quality. I hvae a handful of the bishop seeds that i have in the ground and see. I would assume they would be less variable, you really dont start seeing all the real variations until you get f3 and f2 i think has the most variation. will keep ya posted if anything weird pops up with the bishop seedlings
@@toughcitrus Sounds good, glad to see the enthusiasm within this community!
How would you compare the 942 to the 852, bishop, and this recent cross?
В якоi краiнi вивели цей дивовижний сорт..Mihо vasi satsuma?😊та як звати того селекцiонера?😊
That looks promising. Does it mean that there is only 1 tree out there for now?
Yeah, I think it’s just a coupe trees. He has grafted a few to get more. Hopefully we will see more of these in the future 🤞
Цiкаво який мороз витримуе mihо vasi satsuma...?
How does it compare to the prague chimera (citsuma)?
I have actually yet to try a Prague chimera fruit. Hoping this winter is the year. But I hear they are amazing.
@@toughcitrus I swear I call Stan every month looking for one to buy and plant here in 8a. Right down the street from virginia fruit grower
@@NihilusTheGreat lmfao 🤣 I know the feeling. He’s such a great guy. He puts up with me and I’m sure I’m a pain in the 🍊
I ran across your seed page man. Since it is best to plant them around 80° will you still have those us852 seeds for sell when the weather warms up?
To be honest I only have a limited supply of us852 and when they are gone, I won’t have anymore until early winter. Right now I would say that I have enough to sell up until spring time so hopefully heat won’t be an issue. Some would just be sprouting by the time they get to ya 💪🍊
are you going to try to pop the seeds you did find?
Absolutely, I have the 3 pineapple citrandarin seeds in the ground and the bishop as well. 🤞
@toughcitrus that's awesome! I'm pretty jealous right now. the pineapple one sounds amazing. I'm just finding your channel as of about a week ago. love it.
@@rogerjackway429 it really was good, like a glass of dole juice. Welcome to the world of tough citrus 💪🍊 and welcome to the channel!!!
Do you know what the US857 is? Stan sent me one and I can’t find any info on it.
He probably sent you US-852. It’s the same as I showed in this video that is called a bishop. Us852 bishop is a seedling of us852 with better fruit quality. But I did a video a month or 2 ago about the us852. Label may have been mislabeled but I know he has us-852 because that’s where I got mine from. 💪🍊
Some guy in oak harbor Washington has a cross that he said is good to -15 below zero…… thoughts ? Selling them in planters on Facebook
Oh wow, that is pretty cold. I know that wild poncirus trifoliate trees can handle that -15 but I don’t know if the citrandarins can handle that low. Would definitely be worth grabbing one for sure, you never know 💪🍊
What kind of citrus is he saying it is?
@@jroman7615 Yuzu Ichandrin Citrus….🍊 I believe if my memory serves me correctly
Are there any cold hardy citrus hybrids that can survive Zone 5b? I live in Chicago
@@jroman7615 not really many hybrids but I know poncirus trifoliate should handle it. It grows up in Michigan
@@toughcitrus are Trifoliate oranges any good? Are they edible?
@@toughcitrus actually Chicago recently just got updated to Zone 6a 😅 do you think any citrus hybrid or species besides trifoliate orange?
@@jroman7615 I know it gets below zero up there and that is usually the cut off for most of the hybrids, zero degrees. But it can be done with some protection during the colder months
@@jroman7615 it depends on who you ask, they are really sour but when I lived In Tennessee it was the only citrus 🍊 could find and I would make lemonade with them. They are like a really sour key lime with some bitterness to them
Where can we get this?
At the moment, there are only a few trees total of this variety. It’s going to take some time to graft out more and start getting this amazing variety more available. Very rare, not at the moment. I’m hoping to get a tree or 2 and also graft some also. I talk with the breeder of this regular so I will keep you posted 💪🍊
@@toughcitrus what cold hardy citrus do you recommend for edible and also something that can survive a zone 8a?.

Where to get seeds or scion
At the moment, I’m hoping to get some budwood or a small grafted tree. But there is really one tree currently. This is from a citrus breeders own private collection.
