A very beautiful and thought provoking film that sadly may have been too bold and ambitious for its own good and the tastes of the general public of the time. One of cinema's great forgotten masterpieces, brilliant social commentary and psychological interplay between the characters played by De Niro, Depardieu and Sutherland.
one of the greatest films ever made, even with its few flaws and over-run scenes. Bernardo Bertolucci may have done some improper things in his life, however he remains one of my all-time favourite directors and story tellers.
Bertolucci's leather is very long, classic and good. "Olmo&Alfredo" see the love and friendship of friends Although there are many obstacles The friendship remains the same. At first I secretly thought will be a gay movie Two friends fell in love with each other and it ended in tragedy. At the end, the two old men play together and revert back to being children. So cute. 🤟"...
I just watched 1900 / Novecento. Of course it i enjoyable, with its Cane and Abel story of 'fratelli di diverse madre', and with De Niro and Depardieu it is irresistible. But the story is strangely anti-Fascist and anti-Communist at the same time. The quotes or homage to Eisenstein and Soviet cinema, its heroism of the peasant class and farming, this is classic propaganda and Bertolucci surely admires it.
Secondly , I'd say Bertolucci is very much in the same vein as Visconti and Pasolini. The Gattopardo for the sense of a dying aristocracy, Pasolinoi's peasants for the face of grass-roots 'ethnic' Italia.
Communism was a real prospect and a very strong alternative for that time and place..Can you image the odds of threatening the intertests and well-being of the rich, bourgeois and businessmen back then? That's why rich and powerful orginised masses of lumpen-rabble to crush labour uprisings, & that's cslled fascism...
@@jettz8571 He's kind of right though. Regardless of whether or not you believe in Communism, this film doesn't really explain much about the nature of Communism or Fascism and why the people are drawn to them. Every character is either presented as good or evil with no grey area. There's too much plot and not enough small character building moments. It's visually beautiful and has a great soundtrack but the story is pretty naive in how it presents the issues that it wants to discuss.
@@mrblobby7864To be fair, the communists in 1900 aren't that much likeable either. They're blood thirsty animal torturers, just slightly less so than the fascists. I don't think this is intentional though, and I do agree this is a propaganda film.
It's sad that this raw, realistic style ( like here or in Once Upon a Time in America) has disappeared from the cinema forever.
Both Italian filmmakers and both with Robert De Niro. I guess that's the recipe you need to make one!
Probablh my top 1 and 2 favorite movies of all time.
@@benanderson3791 …and Morricone, don’t forget 🎶

Means are so important.
Communism is always a real and strong alternative. Capitalism gets more rotten every day.
