The freedom to adjust various graphical settings long should've been a standard in every video game released on home consoles and hybrids, not just PCs. CD Projekt Red, Saber Interactive and Nintendo themselves made the right choice allowing players access to this option on Switcher 3.
To be honest, when I am playing on a console I would rather not worry about the settings and just let the developers set the optimal settings according to their vision of the game and the experience they are going for. Although this is a special since the game is being ported to a system with lower specs than its original minimum requirements so you choose where to compromise.

There are still some obnoxious bugs/janky things in the W3 too though. Not Skyrim level, but still. I still hope we get an enhanced edition ala Witcher 1 and 2. Would be well-timed if they put out with the launch of the new consoles. Maybe bring back some of the originally more ambitious graphics features, like the volumetric lighting.
My Roach in Switcher 3 was floating in the air at one point. And I didn't even start playing until 3.6 was out (not by choice. It was a complete coincidence). So yeah, both have bugs but they're both huge open world games and now they're portable. I'm not even mad.
My advice after a few hours playing with this patch: turn off AA and depth of field, and set sharpening to high. The AA in this game is awful, once I turned it off and activated the sharpening filter I realized I that couldn't use AA again. The type of AA used in this game makes the image quality so blurry that it eats like half of the texture details, it looks bad even with sharpening, it's insane. I can live with aliasing when the alternative is feeling like I need new glasses. This video didn't mention that the patch also added grass physics to the game, something that wasn't mentioned in the patch notes for some reason.
I still am back and forth between max sharpening with AA and without. Bit the Foliage range to medium and Cutscene depth of field off are a given. General depth of field is still a bit of a decision for me, the performance boost is noticeable but it, well, strips the game of a bit of its visual depth.
I'm glad for it. Would be even better if it had cross save for PS4 and XBone. That might be more difficult to manage though. Not sure how open/accessible saves are on those platforms.
Turning the TAA off is like wiping an inch of vaseline coating off the screen. Give me raw pixels, please, I can't wear two pairs of glasses to try to make out what TAA is hiding.
Agreed, while pixel crawl/noise is hardly pleasing on the eye, TAA adds an overall softness to the image I just can't get on with, take Resident evil 2 on PC for example, none of the AA solutions cut it being either too soft or noisy, the one solution at low cost that finally solves it is Nvidia's new DLSS 2.0 solution for RTX cards which is astounding for scaling up from non native resolutions, such a shame it's not relevant here though.
This just pushed me over the edge and I finally ordered a copy. I've been wanting one for the novelty but already had it on PC and PS4 and knew I wasn't going to play through it all over again. But now that I can import my PC save, I'm in.

Portable mode looks great when TAA is turned off and sharpening is turned on. Looks very crips and clean. TV mode is playable. Still a lot better than before where I would say handheld was only playable and TV mode was unbearable due to the blurry image.

I instantly went onto their twitter yesterday for early hot takes on the patch. Really perfect timing for me, I'm 10 hours into the Switch port (first time with Witcher 3). I've played enough to really notice the changes.
This game is actually playable for me now on the switch! Couldn’t stand the blur. Strained the hell out of my eyes. The sharpening, turning off blur bloom and AA made this a way better experience.
DF forgot to mention that the majority of the foliage now reacts to Geralt or NPC/Animals. Also, frame pacing seems to be more consistent and the tiny freezes when you collect plants are gone in portable mode (those problems occurred mostly in this mode). But there is a downside to those improvements. I have run into a lot of visual bugs since the update. (Sorry if I made mistakes, I'm French.)
I’ll be sticking with default settings as the game looks gorgeous and the FPS dips aren’t terribly noticeable. PS4 and XB1 have similar dips so it’s not too disconcerting.
It’s a balancing act. Don’t want to play games that are pixelated and look rubbish, but I don’t want to play games with sluggish FPS. 60FPS isn’t a necessity, even the somewhat low frame rate on Witcher 3 for Switch runs relatively smooth - can’t think of many recent games with frame rates that are that bad that they’ve ruined the experience for me.
The Switch port looks so much better with everything disabled. Not to mention the improved framerate. Is everything fancy disabled by default, if not then that's how it should be.
Could come later? This was a surprise update/feature, too. I'd guess it's a harder thing though. Saves are probably more locked up/inaccessible on console. I'd love it though.
Last night, I played with the visual settings and it really does make a world of difference. I'm already 150 hours in on my Switch and should easily log 50 more, and this will make the last few dozen quests and story missions even better.
I am truly amazed by this port. I've had it for a while, and decided to jump back in today when I had some down time at work. And just holy shit every time I'm taken back, it's just absolutely baffling this is on my switch.
Saber Interactive absolutely DABBING on every third party dev crying switch is not good enough to run ps4 games every game should have graphics options regardless of platform!
id rather have aliasing everywhere than a Vaseline smeared image from tsaa. tsaa is by far the worse form of anti aliasing ive always hated it ever since halo reach started it
There are different versions of it, some look nicer than others. And post processed sharpening can bring back clarity without losing the anti-aliasing. I'm basing this on messing around with GTA V years ago and ReShade
Eh. Yes and no. It's sharper, but you also get super strong aliasing and flicker everywhere. AA+High Sharpening seems like a better compromise. For me, at least.
It looks much better and closer to PC with Anti-aliasing & Sharpening completely OFF sinch that AA is very Harsh, makes the image completely Blurry even with Sharpening at HIGH. Also I think keeping Motion Blur ON while keeping AA and Sharpening OFF will reduce the jaggedness in trees and buildings. :)
Took a break from my game, was having a nice time then I paused to see if I could mess with motion blur or something... then I find all these options and just messed with them to find I had made the game look better, was kinda blown away, I heard nothing about a patch lol
Controller remapping options would be cool. Make it so you didn't have to alternate between the right stick and sprint. And an option for pushing default run off of the left stick entirely.
I have been testing this update, and so far I have to say that by simply going with medium sharpening and turning off anti-aliasing, portable mode is noticeably better. In dock-mode I have the switch connected to a 4k display, so this port always suffers. The sharpening filter on high seems to render the image with too much contrast... it must be noise introduced due to the postprocessing technique. Overall, this port is absolutely amazing.
I noticed a big improvement on clarity tonight playing the new update. I turned off AA on portable because I think it’s crisper. I’ve been having a blast with this game. Now I just wish Nintendo and Microsoft would let me do the same with my Xbox One X cloud save wise.
Just adding cross save with the PC would have been enough for me. I put the PC version down after getting the Switch version and it was rendered useless. I'd completed it on PS4 years ago but never played the DLC's. Now I can play it on PC and carry it on when I go to bed or go on holiday. Still get to experience the beauty of it in 1440p and in the comfort of bed. That's not even mentioning how good they've got it looking with the settings menu! Kudos to Saber and CDPR! Amazing support.
Downloaded this patch and decided to tweak some stuff.. Turned off blur but decided to keep the motion blur on, turned off AA, kept the vegetation rendering on the higher setting and kept depth of field on.. Everything else I kept off, low or still experimenting.. Very nice port and an amazing game in general..
10:26 Hey Thomas, can you please clarify a few things here. It's very unclear to me if you are only talking about the lack of performance improvements in cut scenes or general gameplay in portable mode with all settings disabled. Are you saying that there isn't any performance gain when disabling all settings in portable mode?
I have this on PS4 but for some reason I could never really get a good run on this. I feel like this is a game that demands attention. So I'm now getting this for the switch, which is really the only way I'll be able to put the time needed on this. These settings are amazing. It looks so much better than the original switch reviews. So I'm gathering Sharpening max on and AA on is the way to go!
Cross save really seals the deal for me. I bought Switcher a couple of months ago, and now really feel I can get back in to the game. Do major story quests or sight seeing on PC, and then do treasure hunts and monster dens and little things while in bed. Witcher 3 GOTY frequently goes on sale for 20 USD or less on GoG and Steam, so if you don't already have the PC version, it would definitely be worth forgoing a few trips to Starbucks to be able to get it to complement the Switcher experience.
Very well done to the CD Project Red and the makers of the Switch version. Pc saves cross compatibility is a real game changer and makes perfect sense. Thanks guys!
Been wanting to replay Witcher 3 again ever since I finished the Netflix series. Being able to play it on PC, I didn't really want to play the whole game on Switch (portability at 540p just isn't justifiable for me when I've got a 1080 Ti-powered PC and a 34" 1440p Ultrawide monitor to play it on). With this new patch though, I am soooooo buying the Switch version! No need to choose! CDPR, you've done it again!
Cross save support caught my eye... THIS needs to be a common thing. So long as I can get superior versions of games on my PC for usually a cheaper price I would never consider getting a Switch version. That's the main reason (along with Switch emulator) that I don't have one. BUT if I can play a game on my PC and then continue on my switch that is entirely different ball game, worth buying a second copy for.
I agree with what you said, playing with AA and sharpening is the best way to enjoy the game. There's too much jagged edges without it, especially when resolution gets low.
@@Jason-ut3ou Yeah, overall I agree. In handheld mode, playing without AA is best. But docked mode is the issue, the game can get really low res and no AA makes the game looks really bad. I hate this AA solution because it's too blurry but it's super effective to reduce jaggies. Sharpening helps to get a better image though. I would have liked to set two different settings for each mode: Handheld no AA and sharpening off. Docked with AA and sharpening max.
Anti aliasing off; motion blur and reg blur off; depth of field off; sharpening on low for docked and high for undocked. Totally is playable looking now. Surprised you're recommending AA on.
Who ported this to switch ? I am impressed . Not the post processing effects, which were not intended for this low of resolution and are way blurrier than they should be, but getting this running reasonably well on the hardware is phenomenal . 960x540 @ 30 fps (for the most part) is more than i would have dared to hope for Edit : Saber Interactive for the square . But there is a downside to those improvements. I have run into a lot of visual bugs since the update.
(Sorry if I made mistakes, I'm French.)
Niark56 yeah, the map takes a while to catch up sometimes.
@@lemobyte3235 It's more of a flickering glitch (in dialogue sections) in restricted areas like caves or houses.
France is a foul place.
09:10 this is what all games should aim for, fps over pixel counts.
@Rich Scales as much as I want a good fps, I don't want my game to look like shit
It's always a balance, man. No matter what framerate is targeted.
It's mostly TAA that ruins the image. Making everything look way to blurry.
Honestly i think turning off AA is the best solution.
Now combine this with the 60fps layeredfs tweaks and overclocking and you're good to go.
For me it looks best and at least for me with AA on it looks less blurry but does have a slight bit of vasiline
Cross platform save support would be epic I have this one Xbox One X, PS4 Pro as well and Switch but mainly play on switch at work.
As someone with a crap PC I really wish we got console cross-save as well, but I can't say I'm terribly surprised we didn't.
Could come later? This was a surprise update/feature, too.
I'd guess it's a harder thing though. Saves are probably more locked up/inaccessible on console.
I'd love it though.
Man, this is amazing. I guess all that's left on the dream list is cross-saves with PS4 and Xbox...
Been playing this game on switch, the game looks pretty gorgeous for a portable device.
Off all setting with AA and max setting for sharpening... Perfect
Last night, I played with the visual settings and it really does make a world of difference. I'm already 150 hours in on my Switch and should easily log 50 more, and this will make the last few dozen quests and story missions even better.
Then start again in new game mode + later on. Its what I did with ps4pro. Now I'm back at it on switch. Plus I have it on PC haha.
What settings did you use?
great thing steam and nintendo have teamed up with cross save.
Steam hasn't partnered with Ninty, Steamworks has always allowed crossave.
I'm really amazed by the Cross Save Functionality and the ability to tweak all the Settings!
Great Job for this one! 👍
Switch: The little console that could :D Hats off to Saber Interactive and CDPR on this fresh round of optimisations.
I am truly amazed by this port. I've had it for a while, and decided to jump back in today when I had some down time at work. And just holy shit every time I'm taken back, it's just absolutely baffling this is on my switch.
You should check out Doom Eternal.
3.6 has some really delayed streaming.
8:16 shows that good
Hard to say whether it is 3.6 or just a fluctuation. The game is too dynamic (weather and so forth) to make accurate 1:1 comparisons for such details
@@AcidDotDrop
It shows up a couple times throughout the vid.
I think a few of the comparisons are accidently switched with the wrong gameplay tied to the wrong title.
The sharpening filter is a killer addition.
Saber Interactive absolutely DABBING on every third party dev crying switch is not good enough to run ps4 games
every game should have graphics options regardless of platform!
Saber and Panic Button are gods of porting games to the Switch. Can't say the same about the guys who brought Outer Worlds to the switch.
Chan outer worlds is badly optimized on all platforms
id rather have aliasing everywhere than a Vaseline smeared image from tsaa. tsaa is by far the worse form of anti aliasing ive always hated it ever since halo reach started it
The only game where temporal AA looked good IMHO was Doom 2016
@@cacomeat7385 Crysis 3 is also pretty good about it.
@@cacomeat7385 mainly cause you could sharpen it to negate the smeariness
There are different versions of it, some look nicer than others. And post processed sharpening can bring back clarity without losing the anti-aliasing. I'm basing this on messing around with GTA V years ago and ReShade
Same TAA is disgusting, not only does it smear the image you get a ton of ghosting from it in games
Is it only me or with "All settings off" game looks better?
marunia256 In some areas yes, because you can actually see the detail without the bloom on
The problem on the "default settings" one is the AA, turn it off and it'll look better
Asle Agreed, the AA made the game look way too blurry.
@@Calebfire10 Exactly lol
Now it makes sense to buy the switch version dammit! want life back!
One of the few examples where turning AA off actually improves image quality. No more Vaseline on the screen!
Eh.
I love how it looks since Update 3.6
Toss a coin to your Switcher.
some people hate motion blur, but to me AA is like a blur filter over the screen, why someone would prefer a short-sighted feel to their game
The good thing is we can choose. I personally turn off AA and depth of field and turn on sharpening.
At 7:40 I find it funny how textures looked way better at all low than all high. Particularly noticeable on the arch.
Got this Game on Christmas for Switch. I am going to buy the pc version immediately. This is so awesome!
Controller remapping options would be cool. Make it so you didn't have to alternate between the right stick and sprint. And an option for pushing default run off of the left stick entirely.
Witcher 3 on Switch is a miracle.
Awesome new patch. If only they would sell it to me on the switch for the price I can get it for on PC
Wow that was fast. Didnt expect this video for another few days.
i like the idea of settings options on consoles more than hardware variance between generations
Ok I think it's about time to play TW3. I have it on PC I will buy it on Switch as well. cross save baby let's see how it feels.
03:36 The wall textures are far worse on the new 3.6 patch. How can Tom say there's no perceivable difference?
He most likely didn't notice it.
@@Mr.GameCrazy Then don't say that part of the voice-over directly when it's occurring on part of the video where it's very apparent 😂
@@ebridgewater it is probs a streaming thing
@@RDilux Probably. Still crap, though :/
Yep probably a streaming issue.
Finally! I was put off by the blurry image earlier, but I'm buying this game now!
I have this on PS4 but for some reason I could never really get a good run on this. I feel like this is a game that demands attention. So I'm now getting this for the switch, which is really the only way I'll be able to put the time needed on this. These settings are amazing. It looks so much better than the original switch reviews. So I'm gathering Sharpening max on and AA on is the way to go!
props to saber and cdpr for realizing users found a way to enable a graphics menu and patching it in officially instead of locking it off
Wow the sharpening effect at max makes so much difference!
Digital Foundry is brought to you by The Novigrad Run
Woah. These devs are legends
Panic Button has finally met its rival Saber Interactive.
Wow with the update I am able to still use the mClassic & get more boost. CDPR thank you!
Damn I wish I would have waited a few weeks to buy. I’ve already caught up to my steam save already.
Very well done to the CD Project Red and the makers of the Switch version. Pc saves cross compatibility is a real game changer and makes perfect sense. Thanks guys!
Thank you for running through all of this! Very thorough!
Looks so much better without AA blur.
Wow a great patch.. I’ll just go get my Switch and d/load 👍 thanks DF as always
I was waiting for this one!
Love the new update :)
Been looking forward to your guys deep dive on this update
Crosssave system is also really nice. You can continue on your switch where you left on your PC and even vice versa I believe.
The dropped the ball by NOT calling this The Switcher
*Watched more DF videos about the Witcher 3 than actually played the damn thing*
I'm surprised no one seems to have noticed that now small foliage react to the player.
This was previously not the case.
Oooh boy, been waiting on this video since yesterday. Time to dissect that juicy patch
I agree with what you said, playing with AA and sharpening is the best way to enjoy the game. There's too much jagged edges without it, especially when resolution gets low.
That AA is disgusting it's like needing glasses. Hell even when wearing my glasses I still feel like I need a new pair with it.
The Switcher. :3c
Cross save with either Xbox or PlayStation as well would have been awesome.
Wow, I didn't know it had cross save! I must get it now!!!
No mention of the new touch controls? It makes map navigation and inventory control an absolute pleasure.
Installed the patch, turning antialising off makes a world of difference. Looks much better
Anti aliasing off; motion blur and reg blur off; depth of field off; sharpening on low for docked and high for undocked. Totally is playable looking now. Surprised you're recommending AA on.
The Switch truly is a PC gamer's pocket companion.
Who ported this to switch ? I am impressed . Not the post processing effects, which were not intended for this low of resolution and are way blurrier than they should be, but getting this running reasonably well on the hardware is phenomenal . 960x540 @ 30 fps (for the most part) is more than i would have dared to hope for
Edit : Saber Interactive for the square . (The port authority)
