Should Quail Have Mealworms?

  • I often get asked about whether you should feed mealworms to quail or not. Mealworms are a great way to boost the protein level in your feed and they make a great treat for your birds but there are a few things to keep in mind.

    I have mixed in mealworms in their feed before but not regularly. I do put a handful of black oil sunflower seeds and grit in the plastic GLAD feeder container. I've been told it's a good fat for wintering fowl.

      Black oil sunflower is a very good winter supplement. very high in fat and helps with keeping them warm. That is a great suggestion.

    Thanks Chris! You always have great "nuggets of wisdom". I am raising my own mealworms (and quail) and they do go bananas, and. I have been able to hand feed with them!

      Nice. Mealworms are a great motivator for taming up the birds. :)

    My quail are spoiled, they have a treat mixture right now that I mixed up that contains dried meal worms, hulled sunflower seeds and a bit of cracked corn. They get a sprinkle at chore time in their sand box or sometimes a sprinkle over their organic game bird feed. They go nuts for it! :)

    It's funny that you say that I actually noticed that my babies were pecking at each other's toes when they were in the incubator and the light was being shown inside so that was their first instinct I figure since they're too small to handle a mealworm anyways I actually took all my mealworms and fly grubs as well as crickets and they're all dried out I buy them in bulk and I grind them together with the regular feed that's already at a 24% protein I noticed that my baby started growing their feathers out on the second day and by the third day small peaks of feather started to show it stay for now and they look like they're going through an awkward teenage stage just much younger they're getting big fast so I would definitely suggest grinding it all up you grind up the food anyways for the first few weeks might as well throw in their treats and their two LOL I also take all of their egg shells that they hatch from and grind those up as well and place it all into their food since it's all a fine powder they consume it all I feel that this benefits them the same way a mother consuming her placenta. love your videos you're always hitting the nail on the head with your topics keep it up you're awesome

      Nice. Sounds like you are doing a great job with your birds. The only suggestion I would have is to not add the egg shell. Put it in a separate container and allow them to eat from it as needed. It is easy to give them too much calcium (which can be as bad as not enough) if you mix it in with their feed but if it is offered on the side, they will only eat as much as they need. I hope that makes sense.

    As always a great discussion. I raise my own mealworm alongside the quail. Their leftover dust is also a great fertilizer. My veg thrives on a mix of this, quail poo and my tiger worm composter.
    I freeze then boil the mealworms - then either chop or mash it up for the chicks. Looking at your cages - I have to ask - do many of them fall out on the wire? my birds like to drop and peck at them before eating :D

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 года назад

      Yes. if I do feed mealworms to the birds, a lot of them end up on the wire and fall through. Like you said, the tend to peck and throw them around before eating them.

    I fed my baby quail small crickets and it was a feeding frenzy! One would grab a cricket and take off running and four or five others would chase him, trying to steal the cricket. They'd chase after one that caught a cricket even when there were still crickets roaming around uncaught. Vicious bloodthirsty little fluff balls... Sharks got nothing on these guys...

    If I raise my own mealworms, could I feed tiny baby mealworms to the tiny baby quail chicks? I would think if they are small enough they wouldn't resemble quail toes. Thoughts?

    • @robertveronda4225
      @robertveronda4225 4 года назад

      I raise them and find it hard to handle any that are not large, let alone see. As far as the size for baby quail to not confuse for their own or others toes also I would think that the time spent trying to collect the little worms wouldn't be worth it. Just my 2 cents

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 года назад

      You can try for sure. But really, if the birds are accustomed to eating worms, they will probably go after toes too. It may not be a huge issue though.

    Might want to make sure any dried mealworms are from a safe source. When they're shipped over from Asia they're sometimes grown on 'night soil' i.e. human poo.

    • @Slightlyrednecked

      It probably wasn't the rooster. Unfortunately, when you try to combine new birds together, they almost always fight. I have addressed that issue in video before. Here is a link if it is helpful. ruclips.net/video/LaZwrp0ev4I/видео.html

      I am so sorry for the slow response. I bet you figured it out by now. Yes, I would put the material in the nestbox for her. Watch her closely and make sure she has the babies in the nest box. If she doesn't, then pick them up and move them to the nestbox as soon as you can.

    Hi Chirs! I’m a newbie to quails. I got 18 hens & 4 roosters (51 days old). One of the roosters are extremely aggressive & it pecks & chases everyone. (Both hens & roosters) What is this behavior? Do I need to remove the rooster?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 года назад +2

      It sounds like you have an overly aggressive rooster. Many times they will calm down after a little while but if it keeps up, you may have to remove him. Some birds are just more aggressive than others.

    I have a question dont know anything about quail just begining soon to have -15 weather here got the itch to incubate some cortunix quail eggs maybe have some chicks around dec 28th all goes well when should i move them outside in that kind of weather?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 года назад

      -15 F or C? Either way, I would give them until about 4 to 5 weeks old before moving them outside. And try to find a way to acclimate them to it a little. Like a slightly warmer spot to move them to for at least a few days before moving them outside.
