I think in the end the humanity needed to be turned off. Not to be kept off but Elena needed to learn what it was like to have it off and how to come back from it in the end. Maybe that’s why it was so epic on Tv. She’d always had a lot more humanity than either of the brothers, but it was still something she needed to go through. If this didn’t cause it something else probably would have a bit down the line

She may of cried for the scene but those tears were real over the emotions she was feeling because even Ian somerhalder ( damon) and Paul Wesley ( stefan ) were turning around to look at the director when they were filming to see if they could stop filming because she was to the point of an emotional breakdown.
