Damon always protected her from the shadows. He was seen as the villain and he didn't care if it meant she was safe and alive. Some heroes don't have to be in the spotlight, like Stefan (no offense here just giving an example), other heroes stay in the darkness protecting without anyone knowing someone is there to catch you. Damon was that person, not only to Elena but everyone he cared about he just hides it by feigning indifference.
The reason is because stephan is truly a kind person .....just imagine being a ripper and resisting human blood at the same time .....he was always the greater man accept it!!!

Nina is one of the finest actresses I've seen so far. She deserved so much bigger roles bigger projects after tvd too. Sad we couldn't see such an icon very much in other projects. She's so talented and a natural actor that you can guarantee she would kill every role she gets. This will always ache my heart that they ignored such a talent. That's why i watch tvd over and over again just so i can feel like i'm in her era and enjoy watching different shades of her fantastic expressions, emotions and brilliant acting. Love you Nina

I remember first binging this show in a month through all 8 seasons, originals all 5 seasons, then currently watching legacies. So I went back and watched the show in what would be in-universe chronological order. Looking back on it now, the patience these people have to deal with Elena is BEYOND. My dumb ass woulda always been like: “Listen, girl. We’ve been alive how long? Right, right, that’s what I thought. And you should know us AT LEAST ENOUGH to know how me and Stefan would react if Bonnie was TRULY dead. Sit the hell down.”

Even Stefan was calmer than he would’ve been if he felt Damon had knowingly gotten her killed. But he’s known his brother longer than Elena has. So while she ignored Damon’s calm demeanor and jumped to conclusions, Stefan probably assumed he was up to something and hadn’t really let her die. And let’s just say Elena had known. She probably would’ve felt it was too dangerous to attempt, then went behind their backs to offer herself up to Klaus, thinking it would solve everything.

I remember watching the show during season 2 and 3, there was a meme around the internet about how the group should allow Elena to think they were going with her plan (since she was always convinced her plans would work over everyone's), then have a plan B and C for when Elena's planned failed (because they always did) but not tell Elena because she'd screw up the good plans. Honestly, I pretty much liked all the characters in the show for one reason or another, including Katherine, but I could never like Elena from the simple fact she was an idiot most of the time.

I also understand why it's frustrating, but are you really telling me you'd let your friends and family be risked when someone was only coming after you? Elena was right that fighting Klaus would hurt the people she loved, as Jenna died and Klaus would have killed Stefan if they didnt have a past together.
