It's actually 8th fret on the 6th string, 5th on the 4th string and back to 8 on the 6th string for the ending of the main riff the first time. Instead of the open 6th string in between, you can clearly hear the difference and see him do it live.
@@chadholmes7452 it's such a common mistake but it sounds so off, I don't get how people miss it. Sounds terrible when he does it. Honestly his tone was not in the realm of "nailing" either like he claims. Yet people are all loving it, I just don't get it at all
First off, great video. I like how you’re taking it through the steps one by one rather than just listing the effects that you were using. But it would be great if you were showing where your knobs were set on the amp as well as the pedals.
Hate to be that guy, but after the main riff, I think it’s an F#minor, not a F#major. But I may be wrong. Anyway, great playing and video ! Thank you !
Oh that is a good tone! Favorite crunchy sound. Love this series. Keep it going. My favorite tones are the Slow Dancing Intro (from WTLI dvd), Bold as Love Mayer’s album version and Tin Pan Alley. Bold as Love on the Continuum Album is just so chewy (As usual you have two tones - “rhythm” and the solo - think I like the “rhythm” tone best - like choosing between pizza and ice cream).
& if you are a bass player watch the live vid here on RUclips with Pino Palladino's work on this song. Great vid. Hey there ya go. A bass vid on Pino's work.
Really nice man. Good job. Keep up with the good work And please think of doing "I don't trust myself with loving you" by John Mayer or slow dancing in a burning room 😂😂
Thanks for the video, you did very well...! Keep on doing what you do - THOMANN rules!!! Please do a video trying to find that JM-Sound/Tone on the new BOSS Katana MKII-Series amps...or you could make a new series about finding signature-tones on the new BOSS Katan MKII-Series amps!!! Thanks a lot.
Pearl Jam - Alive, Soundgarden - Black Days, Radiohead - Creep, Mastodon - Iron Tusk, Jimi Hendrix - Who Knows, or maybe a song from Cynic because Sean Reinert died last week : Cynic : Evolutionary Sleeper
Thomann's Guitars & Basses thanks! Yeah, that's pretty convincing. 👍🏻 Any idea what pickups Chris has in that guitar (ie Twisted Tele in order to get more of a Strat tone)?
Nathan Sink hey Nathan, Kris here. It’s my custom shop 53 reissue tele with periodically correct pickups in it (Fender’s hand wound Blackguard singles). It’s a magical guitar, man. Cheers!
No need to split humbuckers for 1 coil tone ... just roll the volume waaaayyy down and tone all the way up ... ;) Great video Guill and lot of usefull tips there.
Awesome tone and playing! What did you have your amp settings on? I also play a Fender tweed amp and would be curious where you dial in amp gain, volume and EQ
Thanks Patrick ! :) Here are the amps controls: Volume at 3, Presence at 6, Bass at 4, Medium at 4, Treble at 6 :) for reference unless I change them during a video, these are always the same ! // Guillaume
I tried this and it made my amp and guitar come alive!! Thank you! Also, added in an MXR classic 108 fuzz with the input buffer in and it added a nice thickness to it
What kind of Fender Strat ist this? I need a shell pink strat in my life. Can you send me a link to this beauty? Or is this your personal one? If so, congrats!

I have been trying to get that intro tone forever with no success. It is a great tone. It is real hard to tell if it has light distortion or if it just a real driven clean tone.
Sorry the control panel has terrible reflections and we couldn't use the footage. Volume at 3, Presence at 6, Bass at 4, Medium at 4, Treble at 6 :) for reference unless I change them during a video, these are always the same ! // Guillaume
Comments on the tab: I don't think the 5/6 slide to 6/7 sounds correct (in the start after the A). It sounds better with a slide from 5/4 to 6/5 (strings in order GD). I.e same G-string position but change the D-string.
But it’s not about playing everything exactly how someone else played it. Do it your way. That’s the point of music. John Mayer said himself he doesn’t like seeing people play his songs exactly how he does. And he himself changes his own songs
@@dbo4506 You are right about that for sure. You got to get your own style and own touch. However I thought it was appropriate to give my opinion in this case. As the tutorial says -"how to nail the playing and the sound of your favourite songs". If the intention is to teach somebody how to nail a song, I don't think there's much room for improvisation for the teacher. The improvisiation is for the student in the next step. Start with the original and the improvise on that. But hey, there's no rules. But if I was about to learn some basic riff from AC/DC or something similar I'm pretty sure I don't want to learn some dudes own interpretation at first.
Okay. So first, this has way to much gain for that riff. Listen to the Try! album, it's almost clean. Second that riff was LITERALLY a TS808 and a Boss BD2 into a Blackface Fender.....so why would you recommend a different pedal and a differently voiced amp when all the ingredients are readily available??
@@JustinJeske Fender Vibroverb....IS a Blackface Fender and Two Rocks are derived from that circuit. Doesn't change the fact that the pedals are still available.
Adrian Jordan yeah but you can’t say it was literally that tone because those Two Rocks definitely made up majority of it. And sure they are derived but they don’t really sound like a black face at all. Way too many dumble qualities to say they are simply a blackface clone. They go way beyond what a Blackface can do. Should I start calling my Two Rock “just a blackface fender”? No If you think that the tone is just a blackface fender you’re totally wrong. A blackface isn’t going to nail the tone either, but a 100W Two Rock will. So again, you can’t say its a blackface Fender tone. Cause it isn’t
That is a lovely guitar. !! Pink is my favorite color.
I can't believe you were able to uncover that majestic tone- let alone do it with such few pedals. 🙌
Could you do Another Kind of Green by JM Trio?
One of my alltime favorite songs... Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Riviera Paradise -Srv
Great video helps one figure tunes in general and sounds spot on to john mayers tone!

You should redo this video with the vht d50 now that you have one and see if it gets even closer or if it’s just hype lol
