The initial story published June 18, 1972 with the CIA connection and a detailed description of the 5 burglars and the equipment they brought to the office was broken by Alfred E. Lewis. It was entitled "5 Held in Plot to Bug Democrats' Office Here." Mr. Lewis was a police beat reporter who because of his close relationship with the police had access to the scene of the crime. Now this detailed information came from me researching Lewis after Bernstein mentioned him. The story can still be read.

He had every reason to fight against the release of these tapes, the last only 2 years after his death. They show that he even lied in court AFTER his pardon, giving testimony about the selling of ambassadorships for cash. To make things worse, today we know that his greek friend he used for getting cash was working for the greek intelligence. He was a criminal.
