    I read the reason oem baskets have the upper indentation is to help the spring in the pf to clamp the basket. It doesn't affect the dosing or output unless you're over dosing the basket.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад

      Hi George, Thanks for the comment. I think some baskets have that upper ridge as a fill marking after tamping. I don't think it does much as far as basket retention - but maybe. I've never had a precision basket without the ridge pop out when knocking. A lot of OEM baskets have a taper to the side wall as it reaches the bottom. I prefer straight wall baskets with precision cut holes which reach farther toward the basket wall.

    Thanks for the informative videos! Are there guidelines for how deep to set a leveler? Or is it like a lot of espresso stuff, where you just get a feel for it? Like you mentioned leveler marks in the Jack video, does the set depth help prevent that? Thanks!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад +5

      Hi Rich, Thanks for the comment and question! For depth, go as deep as you can without leaving marks in the coffee surface. I leaving marks, back off on depth a notch or three and spin again until no marks and surface is smooth. Also, you're set too deep if the the leveler does not make contact with rim of filter basket. Can test for enough compression of puck by knocking out dry. You're good if it comes out in basically one piece. Hope that helps!

But like you, I do know many Rancilio baskets are a hair smaller in diameter and can be too tight to no fit for some leveling and distribution tools. If that turns out to be the case with your tool/stock basket combo then you'll need to go with a precision filter basket like those from Baristapro: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/ims All will fit tools without issue and your stock portafilter.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад +1

      Hi b, Thanks for the question. A depth adjustment could help. I run my leveler as deep as possible without causing it to slip adjustment. But could also be nature of your filter basket or other causes. Tiny pinhole sprays are not uncommon. Though slightly messy I wouldn't worry about them too much. Big gushing spurts are another story as those indicate serious channeling in the puck. So long as you have even development and continued flow from all areas of the filter basket you are doing very well!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 года назад

      Hi Patrice, Levelers and distributors do look similar and there's some crossover. Most distributors are meant to be used in combination with a tamper. So you distribute and then tamp the coffee to compress the grind. The Jack Leveler used in this video has an easily adjustable depth setting that's not typically found on a distributor. With adjustable depth, the Jack can compress the coffee to the point that tamping is not required.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey Marc! Great and informative video as usual. I use the Rattleware tamper you indicated as an entry-level one in the video and yes, I have that exact little rim of grinds around the diameter of the tamper with each shot. That said, I'm on the cusp of a big upgrade to all my gear. So, here's the question: what's the difference between a distributor and leveler? Is there one? Prior to using the posh Bravo kit, you had been advocating for only the Jack Leveler. I understand the goal is eliminating variables for fidelity between shots, but if you could elaborate a bit, that would be awesome. Thanks again!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад

      Hi Spencer, Thanks for the comment and question. There is some gray area in difference between distributors and levelers. But, depending on the specific tool they may do essentially the same thing. Not all distributors end with a leveled surface for tamping. Not all levelers compress the coffee enough to go without traditional tamping. I continue to advocate for The Jack. It's less than half the price of the 2 tool Bravo Distributor and Tamper. I tend to use the same coffee dose weight and same filter basket. The Jack works well for that. If changing baskets and dose weights a lot the Bravo will always get you the same distribution and tamping pressure regardless of basket and dose weight used.

    Thanks for the video! Question from a noob: Are portafilters the same size or is the measurement rating for the filter? I’m having trouble finding a 54mm distribution tool online to go with my 54mm breville portafilter. Do I match the size of the basket to the distribution tool or do I need a larger basket and portafilter? Full disclosure: My Bambino Plus is in the mail right now. I’m trying to learn as much as I can now to hit the ground running.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад +1

      Hi 80's kid, You are welcome and thanks for the question. Portafilters and filter baskets use the same dimension reference. So a 54mm filter basket fits in what's called 54mm portfilter. The 54mm measurement refers to the internal diameter of the filter basket. 54mm distribution tools can be difficult to find as 54mm filter baskets are most common in closer to entry-level appliance grade machines. Many of those including the Bambino use a pressurized filter basket in which leveling and/or tamping has little impact on the extraction process. Unless you are modding the Bambino to use a non-pressurized filter basket I would not bother purchasing a leveler. The Bambino comes with Breville's Razor tool which should take care of things.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад

      Hey g, Thanks for the question. The Bravo is designed as a distributor to be used prior to tamping. The head of the Bravo does not exert as much pressure on the coffee bed. It "floats" over the coffee. The Jack has an adjustable static depth setting so when properly set it exerts enough force to compress the coffee so no tamping is needed.

    So to know what's my stock basket actual size is,I need to measure it with caliper and than get leveler for it?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 года назад

      Hi Chef, I don't recall what machine you have. If it has an E61 or Bezzera BZ brew group then your stock basket should be 58mm. Actual size is likely about 58.6mm. Tools like levelers speced at 58mm to 58.5mm should work well with your stock basket. Many of the tools listed as 58mm are actually a few tenths larger so fit well in stock 58mm baskets. Especially true for precision tools like the Jack leveler.

    Hello Mark. Thanks a lot for the video you guys are doing.
    I wanted to ask, I have a gaggia classic pro. I would like to change the 7gr and 14gr baskets with the nanotech ones.
    How can I know that those baskets will fit inside the PF and when I lock the PF to the Group Head? I read on HomeBarista that nanotech baskets won't fit perfectly with the GH of Classic pro.
    Can you help me in this issue?
    Thank you

      Hi Kris, Thanks for the question. Yes The Jack will work with those baskets. The Baristapro 20g D26661NT basket is one I use all the time with The Jack. IMS should be the same. When using just be sure get rid of any residual grinds on the vertical surface of the leveling head.

      Hi FM, Thanks for the question. A couple of options. There's this ECM Pressure Regulating tamper. It's a single tamp pressure so not adjustable like the Bravo. But does have a disc which rests on top of the filter basket rim to help keep the tamp level: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/tampers/products/ecm-pressure-regulating-tamper
      Also check out the Espro Calibrated Tamper. Again a single tamp pressure: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/tampers/products/espro-58mm-calibrated-convex-tamper
      Hope that helps!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад +1

      Hi tK, Thanks for the question. A couple thoughts. First, tampers may bind due to ground coffee between the side of tamper head and filter basket. Second, tamping coffee in a pressurized basket in most cases has little affect on the extraction as it's the pressurized basket causing pressure to build in the portafilter and not the grind size and compression (tamping) of the ground coffee. If you really want to tamp - which is fine, a tamper with smaller head may work better for you.

    Wait wait what's the difference between a pressurized espresso machine? Don't all machines use bars of pressure? As in, do I need to tamp my puck for my Breville machine?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 года назад

      Hi ef, If using the single wall baskets you should tamp the coffee. If using the dual wall (pressurized) basket then tamping has little effect as it's the basket which creates the pressure of the espresso brewing process and not the coffee.

    Hi, I got a 54.7 bravo espresso distributor since it said that it works with all 54mm portafilters. It doesn’t quite work with mine, do you carry a 54mm distributor

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад

      Hi AE, Thanks for the question. What type of machine are you using? Not all 54mm labeled stock baskets are the same. We find the Bravo 54.7mm works well with higher-end baskets on machines like those from Dalla Corte. A shot in the dark, but any chance you are using a Breville or Sage? Filter basket on their 54mm machines may be a little smaller. We currently do not stock other 54mm distributors.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад

      Hey AR, If not getting a flat tamp try adjusting the depth of the leveling head. Assume by not flat you mean seeing impression of leveling head in coffee surface. Some dust around edges is normal. Can be more or less depending on the filter basket used. Some stock baskets are not as precise in size. Also be sure and wipe down the sides of the leveling head after each use to reduce dust.
