Hearing Lena sing "Going Nowhere" and seeing her expressions just kills me.....she was truly feeling every bit of emotion the words of that song brought her....its obvious she was in so much emotional turmoil. So very very sad :( RIP Lena xx

Lena had a great voice. This documentary reminded me. We now know how damaging being a child star can be. This was the 1970s and they had less knowledge of the fragility of children's psycological development. Look at Michael Jackson, altered his body through plastic surgery, Karen Carpenter also had Annorexia. All of them had forms of body dysmorphia.

I was so sorry to hear that young lady who shared a classroom with Lena choosing to take offence + make it about her, when she noted Lena's insecurities about the dancers + others being more slender. This had nothing to do with her. It was Lena's inner torture. It could have been anything or anyone that triggered her. It wasn't about that girl at all. Perhaps now in hind sight she's more educated about anorexia nervosa. Hi from Oz. 👇💜🤔

i am addicted to this set of 6 clips on lena's life. solomon has a lot to answer for. solomon states in this clip she had no control over what lena did. BULL!!!!! As her manager she had any amount of control. seeing early clips remind me of when i used to watch lena on telly. the world has lost a sweet innocent and beautiful person - both inner and outer.

I find that old classmate from Lena's school very annoying. First of all, it wasn't as if she was Lena's best friend or something, so how on earth would she know if anyone mentioned weight to Lena? Secondly, it is not as if Lena mentioned that woman by name. And third, whether weight was ever mentioned or not, Lena still could have been mentally comparing herself to other girls. I've been in 15-20 ED clinics where talk of weight is forbidden but EVERYONE compares! It is part of the illness!

    • @cousinsister69
      @cousinsister69 3 года назад +4

I believe they mentioned that it was in print somewhere that Lena had said she had insecurities about the slender dance students. I totally agree that this class mate had no right to make this about her. To choose to take offence when Lena was struggling with a serious psychological illness. Hi from Oz. 👇💜🤔

Her parents are ultimately responsible for allowing her to leave home to work. They should have protected her. Her parents were separated and her mother was drinking. Her father made it worse by making Lena feel guilty. He told her that she (Lena) was making them suffer cause she wouldn't eat. Wrong thing to say to an anorexic. I am not defending the agent. The agent already knew her own character and that's probably why she chose not to bear children. Parents were responsible.

They might not have mentioned weight at school but it didn't sop her from comparing. But the idea came from somewhere. It was the perfect storm- depressed suicidal and alcoholic mother, divorced parents, taken away from her father and friends into a loveless home growing up, made to sing non-stop to make someone else money but making none for herself, having all her other career options shut off before high school with no skills to do anything else, no chance to play games and be a normal kid, a loveless marriage and career over before she was 30.

    • @rosiejl2798

It was most likely her manager pressuring her to stunt her puberty so she could fit into the young child dresses and keep that image for as long as possible. She probably aspired to be thin like the dancers at her school but the eating disorder had started before then. Its not like she was going to blame the manager at the time so it was easier to say it was girls at school.

'They didn't want me, so they made me a star.' John Lennon wrote those lines about parents who are obsessed with fame and celebrity. A ten year old girl needs to be with her parents. Showbusiness destroys a lot of people. They even drugged up a young Judy Garland on the set of 'The Wizard of OZ,' so the producers could finish that horrible movie on time. Lena was surrounded by vampires.

It is indeed a very difficult illness to get your head round, whether you are the person who has it, a family member, close friend or casual acquaintance. The mixed up emotions that perpetrate from low self-esteem, unrealistic targets, hyper-sensitivity to criticism and the frustration that impacts on the wider social network leads to a tendency to blame and shame. I understand both sides of the argument here, as I've had anorexia myself and worked with others who have it.

Its easy to judge after the event - but first I dont understand why parents would allow a young child to be taken out of their care into the power of other people they dont even know. Second - when the father saw that Lena had an eating disorder - why did he not put a stop to the whole thing and put her well being first? As for the agent saying - well - we offered her parts and she gladly took them. Children dont have the maturity to make these decisions. It may be Lena was offering herself for roles etc as she could see no other value in herself. Shocking treatment of a child.

There are so many 'what ifs' re Lena. Had she been put in a studio in the mid-Eighties with a bunch of half-decent songs to record who knows what might have happened. It is easy to blame her manager, but at the same time a precocious talent like hers would have been difficult to hold back until she was out of a 'normal' childhood and adolescence. RIP honey.

I can see that nobody on this page has had any dealings with AN. The great determination, the obsessive behaviour is a challenge for all those around the anorexic patient. It's difficult to slow down the patient. Most people wouldn't know how to help an AN. Don't blame Lena's manager. Blame the medics who are slow to catch on to the facets of this illness.

I hate the showbiz kids & variety nonsense with a passion, but the story of Lena Zavaroni is possibly the most harrowing & tragic story to have come out of the world of music & showbiz. It's obvious from this docu she was a gifted performer & vocalist who was deliberately prevented from developing artistically (and mentally) by her management, the crap she was performing no doubt added to her feelings of emptiness at a time in her life when she should have been developing as an adult.

@newagemisfit What you have said there is missing the point. The cause of anorexia for Lena was the fame and the emphasis on slenderness and the lack of love in her life.People who have had anorexia and never been famous have in their lives been criticised for not being slim also, that is a major cause of anorexia which both famous and non famous youngsters have in common.

That agent would let comebacks rush by her and not care about the mental health of Lena and could have just talked about what she thought about her mental health at all or her anyrexia
Or at least try to help while she was still alive

Having struggled with idiopathic rash followed by parasitism, I know only too well how mainstream medics are way out of touch with all and hampered by lack of tests for early diagnosis and/or restrictions on what and how much to prescribe for a condition that hasn't been properly researched.
A lot more info in past decade. A medical condition that can lead to psychiatric problems but as Karolinska cited , the "anorexia does not start out as a mental impairment.
Virus/ zoonotic virus and parasites are behind this.
Bacterial parasites - fungals - mycitoxins - all of the above.

With Karen Halliday talking about nobody saying anything about Lena’s weight I’m thinking “Oh yeah sure Karen” because why would Lena lie about something like that I feel and I feel like Lena wouldn’t have just said something like that as if it was a lie or anything and I bet that woman Karen knew about it anyway because I’m just wondering perhaps she said something about Lena’s weight or she knew if anyone had said something and then here with her talking she just has guilty conscience written all over her like oh of course nobody said anything because that just feels to much a week lie when she talks about that and you know how she went to the Italia Conti stage school I would have said to her “well maybe you should have gone back there to learn to lie even better because you seem to be so good at that already, lying seems to be your specialty doesn’t it and I know why you would never have been good at playing a truthful more down to earth role, because you can barely tell the truth to save your life.”
That’s what I would say, just my opinion.
