I knew Lena very well she told me that all she wanted was a normal childhood and to sing. She hated stage school. She did not like being away from her family. I feel that living with Dorothy Solomon the agent did a lot of harm . This woman put Lena on a strict diet which was not good as Lena was only 10 years old . She lived on salad and diet drinks every day. She was told that she was fat which was a detrimental thing to do. This all led to Anorexia Nervosa when she was only 13 years old.
I miss you Lena and will see you again one day RIP XX

So very tragic I was born the same year as she. I loved dancing at the school disco to Ma . I have just discovered what a magnificent voice , as good as Judy Garland, Barbara Streisand what a voice and a sweet lass. I hope she is at peace now 🙏

Absolutely. Television bosses telling Lena, at only 9 years old old, they she was ‘too fat’ and had to lose weight. That sparked off a lifetime battle Anorexia Nervosa. It’s worthy to note that mental health issues ran in the family, and that her mother Hilda also died from suicide after taking a overdose of barbiturates. Lena was just 17 when that happened.

One thing is for sure, she was a fantastic talent and I for one am saddened that I will never get the chance to hear her perform live. We miss you, Lena. 💙

Lena needed the love and care of her parents to look after her whilst in London and not that awful cold hearted manager. She should have been wrapped up with love and affection by her loved ones to watch her like a hawk. As a child no one had the right to make her feel her image or shape wasn’t like everyone else at stage school. Lena was a unique talent with a big powerful voice, she was a gift to us all, her journey should have been a happy one, every day being a joy being in the arms of her mother to nurture her. I feel that’s where the pain originates. Family is where the heart is. God bless you Lena, it was a pleasure to meet you many moons ago. Rest in Peace you are an angel in the heavens above with your mum. ❤❤

I was just a nipper when i saw her on Oppertunity Knocks. I had cousins from Strabane in Ireland who were on around the same time. My dad was a professional jazz drummer from Glasgow who'd played the circuit for years. Him and my mother were stunned by the vocal range from this wee lass from just 'doon the water' and as a family we followed her progress eagerly wishing her every success.
As long as we have some record of her massive talent, we can celebrate her voice. Second to none.

So sad - such a talent. To hear her say how she was the 'plump one of the school', and then see what 'they' - and sadly, she - considered plump (2:38), she was FAR from overweight. She was a kid - and was, truly, all alone.

Yesterday (end of October 2023) I was in a charity shop and picked up a Lena Zavaroni LP. I remembered her from when I was a lad and that was it, I didn't even really recognise her face. I hadn't thought about her once in 45 years..Through some strange coincidences afterward I kept seeing things about her and eventually watched some of her later interviews.
She has been on my mind since. The tragedy of a gentle, pure soul with such great sadness and loss. Her voice is quite beautiful. She has had me in tears too many times in the last 48 hours..
If only we had a time machine.
Before warning the world about Hitler I would try and save Lena Zavaroni.. You can't help but fall in love with her. I doubt she knew she had that effect.

Wow. She is really at a low ebb by this point, how sad. As someone who has experiened (and been plagued by) anxiety and depression and, hopefully, come out the other side - I can only say she is right about hope. There's always hope. I would like people to realise that this affects people who "made it" like Lena as well as people at the other end of the scale. There is no discrimination when it comes to mental health. I think most people don't get that. They will say they do but they don't. I won't bore everyone with my thoughts on the subject but this is fact - you probably don't get it and never will.

this is so tragic; first time I've seen it and I have always loved Lena's voice. Is the depression from the anorexia?? always there? are they related? why do we not know more about mental (and I won't call them illnesses as that gives the wrong impression) conditions?

    • @SpookyElectric319
      @SpookyElectric319 10 месяцев назад +1

AN and Depression are both illnesses, both mental health conditions. Many people with an eating disorder will present with depression, and/or anxiety and behavioural disorders, such as OCD, ADD, ADHD. Other mental health disorders can present co morbid to AN.

Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, Mario Lanza, Edith Piaf and Lena-there seems to be a connection between the ability to pour superhuman conviction into a song and severe emotional problems, like one is the flip side of the other. Just my own theory.

I saw both her first and, this, her last TV appearance. She was a tremendous talent and always came across as a lovely person. It was terribly sad when she died.
Only one observation though. It is so easy to blame her illness on one person or the industry generally. However the causes of anorexia are often more complex and unknown than that.

I feel like this poor lady was close to being on her last legs at this point and it seemed to me some people just saw her and didn’t think anything was wrong or different about her and I would have thought it would have been quite plain to see there was something wrong and just to have a look at how thin she was becoming and I know that by time Peggy Claude Pierre started to help her Lena had become very skinny quite skeletal. Maybe the Solomon’s knew something was wrong but it seems like they just waited forever till not long before the end of Lena’s life and they could have just done something to help her earlier in her life why didn’t they I keep asking myself?
I’d hope to think that any audience members just noticed that there was something wrong but then there’s no evidence of that it seems and you can’t tell just from people watching her sing what they were thinking and of course you can’t hear anyone else so who knows what they were thinking but I wish they’re would have been more concern for this woman and I feel sorry and sad inside for Lena when she talked about keeping hope and to know that there is always hope whether you feel it or not you’ve just got to think that inside of you and I really feel the song one day at a time with Lena singing was like a cry for help with the lyrics “show me the stairway that I have to climb lord for my sake, teach me to take one day at a time” was her singing for someone to help her and that she was still keeping hope and trying to keep feeling positive and to not give up but then it’s like the world just let her down and her anorexia brought her down too and it killed her too I feel as well.
And her agent Dorothy sounds like quite a nightmare because she didn’t even seem to notice anything wrong either and in a documentary about Lena she was mainly just talking about Lena always being confident about her performing and no mention of any health concerns enquiries questions or anything from her about Lena’s Anorexia and just her agent saying how Lena wanted to a comeback each time with singing basically comeback, comeback comeback kind of in a nutshell to me of what Dorothy Solomon was like.I pity Lena having to stand by living with that bugbare. It may not have been blatantly obvious just seeing her agent but I guess it must have always been skin deep underneath.
