One of my most vivid memories of watching this film as a child involved me realizing what scene was about to happen next and literally RUNNING out of the room. I think I ran all the way down to my backyard and waited until I was sure it was over (I was too young to know I could just fast forward it.) I was a very sensitive child, I just couldn't bare to watch it. Even as an adult, I still feel the need to avert my eyes whenever this scene comes on. I admire that Disney did not try to hold back on the brutality but it is such a difficult scene to get through I almost wish it wasn't in the film.
I know its been years since you posted this but f#ck it. I feel the same way, this scene right here would be my own personal Hell. Being publicly humiliated when I am at my happiest with no way to free myself or hide. Ever since seeing this as a toddler, I can't bare to think how someone could endure this soul breaking trauma. I know society likes to laugh, and that humor at the expense of others is often overlooked, but the human mind is so fragile, and no one should have to be treated like a freak by appearances. Attitude? Sure. Vocabulary? Why Not. But not appearances, you don't get to decide how you look, haters will hate, and people will judge, but it only takes one compliment to show someone you care. And we could all use a little more of that. Good life to you.
I also was (and still am) very sensitive and seeing this broke my heart when I first watched it at 6 y o... This was probably the first time I'd seen this much cruelty and I vividly remember drawing an alternate comic so that Quasimodo could be happy and not be humiliated. Because of that, I still regard this as one of the best Disney movies and one of the most impactful movies I've ever seen.
Just Quasi crying to Frollo for help always kinda gets me. Frollo is basically the only thing he's ever known; he was forced to see him as his "savior" his "protector". It's really heartbreaking because the only time Quasi needs Frollo, Frollo just ignores him and takes joy in it.
I agree, it's sad. But Frollo wants to use this to teach him a lesson. After all, what happened here is precisely what Frollo told him that it would happen if he went to the festival
When Quasimodo really needed him, Frollo turned away, & denied Phoebus the chance to answer Quasimodo’s cries for help, by requesting to stop the cruelty of the crowd.
Kent Horton Everyone in the crowd gasps, turns to Esmeralda in anger and they all proceed to chase her after Frollo demands that everyone kill her and Quasimodo.
I have a feeling Frollo actually someone got his soliders to throw the fruit at Quasimodo which causes the villagers to join in. After all Frollo wanted to punish him for disobeying him.
Yes, that is what the script writers said happened. The 2 guards were Frollo’s men and they were following his orders, and why Frollo refused to stop them.
That’s his second time ruining something by throwing at the best moment just like he did when he threw the patty at spongebob after spongebob said that food is to be eaten not thrown and then Patrick was like *FUCK YOU PIECE I LOVE THROWING* and throws it at him and that costed his sanity at the end he was insane laughing
It's because of this scene I didn't want to see to movie for years after the first time I saw it as a kid back in 96', I cried and looked away... I felt so sad for Quasi
That the mean reason I love Esmeralda when I was little kid. She always have a kind heart. The first heroines to stand up agent to the villain. You'll still my favorite Esmeralda!

The music from 0:37 to 0:50 evokes so much emotion, that paired with the tragedy of what is happening to hunchback.. and I never realized why. But its the notes from his song "out there". And subliminally it's heartbreaking that this was what happened to him on his "one day out there"
I think this is the Disney scene that hit me the hardest ever, even more than the deaths. So powerful you feel every second of it like you were humiliated and naked yourself. Also the despise from Frollo makes Quasimodo even more hurt and mortified. Whoever has been bullied or hurt without getting any help can understand the perfection of this scene and how refreshing is Esmeralda's speech
And this is how I learned empathy as a kid. I don't remember this movie but from tine to time this scene reappears in my memory. Nobody does scenes like this anymore and that's why kids are so cruel now.
My mom remembers this scene from The Hunchback of Notre Dame very well even though she didn't find it right to have the characters humiliate Quasimodo that way in 2D animation that's made by Disney. No wonder the score, "Humiliation" by Alan Menken Featuring The Disney Studio Chorus has been added to my "Anti-bullying melodies" playlist that I made on Spotify. In real life, it's not right for everyone else to imitate this cruel behavior at all, because it may lead to job loss (e.g. getting fired by a good or a bad boss), suspension from school (e.g. getting into a fight with other students on campus), etc.
It's no wonder I did not like Quasimodo in this awful scene where the crowd was being so hard on him. However, I loved him in the other scenes. Look at Quasi ringing bells.
I was bullied as a kid. So I fully emphasize with Quasimodo here. This scene is still hard for me to watch to this day. Though it is very well made, with the powerful music, this scene is still rough to watch, nonetheless.
Matasha Rittle yeah I know! I was asking myself the same thing. He has sway with the people and the ability to manipulate the crowd yet he doesn’t have the balls to go out there when shit gets real.
Matasha Rittle I hear rumors that Clopin is actually genuinely terrified when everyone humiliated Quasimodo, but is too scared to do something about it.
This is a year late yikes Think about it this way. Clopin never actually does anything in the movie that affects the plot. I had the theory that he was not a real character, that he merely served as the narrator and nothing else.
@@LucyAdroit He probably stayed in the background because that is what he did when the story took place. The spots he appears in seem to be where he his relevant to the story itself, and consequently where he has some degree of control over things. Here he is the master of ceremonies able to sway the crowd, but his power relies on the mood of the crowd and he cannot make them change their minds if they are determined to do something like this. In the Court of Miracles he is the leader of the gypsies and wields actual power over people both within and without. Here he cannot do anything without drawing their ire on him, but in the court of miracles he is surrounded by like minded individuals who have no reason to turn on him.
I thought (since the whole city was in on it immediately) the humiliation was a normal part of the festival of fools, and it was only hurtful to Quasimodo because he didn’t see it coming, therefore Chopin didn’t feel the need to intervene.
My heart just hurts when I see this, he was so kind and they hurt him for no reason. I guess people back in the day didnt know the frase never juge a book by its cover, they just thought ugly people were mean.
Frollo: a lesson needs to be learned. Me: WHAT LESSON!? It is you who is in need of a lesson. Not this wonderful man you call a beast when the beast is really you.
Wow I feel for the people in the comments section who find this triggering from being bullied. Esmeralda is a wonderful example of what we can aspire to be and it's this scene alone that makes her one of the best and most underrated disney heroines.
Man, this scene hits really close to him. I've experienced that feeling of powerlessness and humiliation at the hands of numbers around me. While I won't go into specifics, I think those experiences are best reserved for communication with my loved ones, trusted friends and family over the anonymity of the internet, these childhood experiences ingrained in my memory ultimately stemmed from things that just happened to happen when I was a child, who had very little understanding of what it means to stay in control coming from the viewpoint of a young adult, especially with other kids around me my same age at the time with what I would imagine were very similar mindsets and understandings, and certain situations worked themselves out the way they did. I remember I would leave the room whenever we watched this on VHS because this scene haunted me so much, and this has to be one of my all-time favorite animated movies just for what it is. Oh, the irony!
I have Autism... many people dont see it. this scene does something to me when i was a little kid. I was bullied by kids because i was diffrent :( they had branches and they were running after me and hit me very hard!!!!! That was one of the most painful memories I have experienced. When I think about it I automatically get a lump in my throat
I have Autism too dude I’ve been through similar experiences your not alone, remember, those who bully you for being different are the real ones with problems, not you, in actuality, I believe no one is “normal” because everyone is different in their own right and those who bully you for that are just jealous that people like us can live happy expressing our differences and caring for others without hiding our differences to fit in I’m so sorry you had to go through that 😢
Love how they show that the captain is always the good guy due to the fact that he is a soldier he still needed to ask permission from his superior if he is just a citizen I can see him jumping in to protect quasi like Esmeralda did
Imagine the captain coming up protecting Quasimodo and tigers rope and escorting him to the bell tower. and the captain does whatever he can to prevent Quasimodo from being miss treated even more.
This is like his first time ruining a good moment like when he threw the party at sponge bob after his fascinated speech that food is not to be thrown only eaten and then Patrick goes “Uhh uhh uhh I LIKE THROWING FOOD” and throws it at him and after spongebob and squid ward got messed up by the people throwing food at them they became insane thanks to Patrick but when he said “I like throwing food” sounds like he done it before like what guard that sounds like Patrick did 🤔
You know the way they did that to Quasimodo reminded me of the medieval times where the tied someone to a spinny thing and try to throw swords and other stuff , but this one is with foods. Scary people.
As someone who was bullied, this scene was difficult for me to watch as a child. Bullies can be that cruel and even continue to humiliate you when you couldn't be more humiliated. And very rarely does an Esmeralda emerge from the public to stop all that madness, which makes you appreciate when someone is kind. I would say even more than average people.
Hugs to you, I feel very sad hearing your comment. That scene was very hard for me to watch as i had been bullied at school and at work and everyone joined forces with the bully, to the point i considered suicide.
Can I just say Phoebus doesn’t get enough credit in this film? He’s the only person in town besides Esmeralda who never teases Quasi or mistreats him. In this scene he even wants to help him, but lacks the courage to stand up to Frollo. Then later he’s shown always talking to and treating Quasi like a man rather than a monster, even giving him the credit for finding the Court of Miracles and warming the gypsies about Frollo, and then he saves Quasi’s life at the end. Everyone always sees him as a kind of rival for Quasi but he always shows him nothing but friendship even when Quasi pushes him away. And yes, I know the sequel sucked compared to the original but the fact they’re still friends in that even though Phoebus got Esmeralda, and the fact that Phoebus is happy for Quasi finally finding true love, also shows he’s a great character.
After this scene: Clopin: (narrating) If there’s one judge you don’t want to get steamed up, it’s Frollo cuz he had an evil plan. We seriously need more activist Disney heroines and heroes. It's one thing to "follow your dreams and be true to yourself", but quite another to stand up in front of a jeering crowd and publicly decry the cruelty of those in power. Esmeralda's a BADASS.
No matter how ugly he was I couldn't stand this heavy bullying scene. It's like they tortured him out of nowhere, injustice befalls on him and he's alone in all of that.
Something that occurred to me recently was wondering if this humiliation of the King of Fools was an annual occurrence or simply targeting Quasi for the sake of the story. Esmeralda saying ‘This wasn’t supposed to happen’ seems to suggest that this was a cruel one-off, which is even worse. It was always striking to me that Clopin and a lot of the gypsies vanished during this scene, with the soldiers and the mob to do their worst, and it was Esmeralda leaving her tent and happening upon it by chance that led to Quasi being freed. Also telling that it was the people of Paris who did this to Quasi, and the gypsies, the so-called ‘outcasts’, celebrated Quasi, such as Clopin as master of ceremonies, and saved him as Esmeralda did.
2:16 And wait a minute. How far would you say it is from Esmeralda to Frollo? A good 50 yards or so? And she's throwing a jester's hat, which is lightweight and not at all aerodynamic... 2:20 ...and she nailed it! How did she throw that hat so far? *How the hell did she do that?!?* O_O

Same memory to me, this scene scared me when I was little, but later when I was a teenager with my age in that time between 15 and 16 years old, I watched the entire movie and since that time and nowadays I really love this movie.
And, yes this scene really made me cry so far since I was a teenager because it reminded me some of my sad and dark memories to me when I was in my Last year of Junior High School and in that time People that I considered my friends, those People were not really my friends, they were fake friends and that People did not accepted me to their friendship circles, that People really made bullying to me and I had fallen into a deep depression until my two Best Friends really helped me and I have some comfort thanks to them and to my family's love too, made me understand that I was not really alone and I have People Who really cares for me like my real friends and my family like my Mother and father and my older Sister.
@@cristinamacabrerapacheco2838 So sorry that happened to you. People can be really frustrating like that. I can relate to bullying and fake friends. You just gotta learn who’s not good for you in the end and keep those that are.
Yeah.. I did the same thing in the Jumpscare scene in Jurassic Park when the Veloociraptorhead break throw the wall in the electric-bunker.. :/
2:03 She should've yelled, "Hypocrite!" in order to sum up what he was doing
Kent Horton Everyone in the crowd gasps, turns to Esmeralda in anger and they all proceed to chase her after Frollo demands that everyone kill her and Quasimodo.
Idk, I think offering up justice as the opposite of his order of silence is a lot more powerful
She pretty much did.
I would’ve said the same thing to Esmeralda about Frollo as a hypocrite, too.
I prefer “justice”
At least Phoebus had a heart.

I have a feeling Frollo actually someone got his soliders to throw the fruit at Quasimodo which causes the villagers to join in. After all Frollo wanted to punish him for disobeying him.

Chase Griffin there’s no way I would let a crowd do that to anybody.
Yes, that is what the script writers said happened. The 2 guards were Frollo’s men and they were following his orders, and why Frollo refused to stop them.
The crowd would have done it anyqay on their own eventually

I love how Phoebus was the first to ask shows he cares
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoebus_(disambiguation)
He’s so sweet. He didn’t deserve to be treated like that.
Same and I strongly agree with you. We don't know each other very well and I feel your pain.
My question is, where is Clopin during this scene?
Matasha Rittle yeah I know! I was asking myself the same thing. He has sway with the people and the ability to manipulate the crowd yet he doesn’t have the balls to go out there when shit gets real.
Matasha Rittle I hear rumors that Clopin is actually genuinely terrified when everyone humiliated Quasimodo, but is too scared to do something about it.
This is a year late yikes
Think about it this way.
I guess people back in the day didnt know the frase never juge a book by its cover, they just thought ugly people were mean.
they didn't think ugly people were mean, they saw them as objects to laugh at and be cruel to

Chills every single time Esmeralda says “justice” I love her so much
Man, this scene hits really close to him.
I have Autism too dude I’ve been through similar experiences your not alone, remember, those who bully you for being different are the real ones with problems, not you, in actuality, I believe no one is “normal” because everyone is different in their own right and those who bully you for that are just jealous that people like us can live happy expressing our differences and caring for others without hiding our differences to fit in
I’m so sorry you had to go through that 😢

1:57 The look of conflict in Quasi's face as Esmerelda criticizes the man who raised him.

That scene was very hard for me to watch as i had been bullied at school and at work and everyone joined forces with the bully, to the point i considered suicide.
the boy is so cute u dont really have to make fun of what they look like they are always beautiful even if ur scared he is human

I always make fun of the Oafish Guard, especially when he talks goofily.
I saw this in the theater when I was a kid.
