It’s pretty good. You will need the premium software for the brand to get the extra features. The ANCEL DS600 is a bit more money, but comes with access to all the premium software. This is amazing for the price point though 👍
Do you get free lifetime upgrades or do you have to pay for upgrades every year? Do it program push start keys and do you have to pay for additional vehicle models? Do you get one free vehicle software make/models or do you Get All free vehicle makes and models without additional charges?
Yes, I since found this too. No activation on my Suzuki. Still good value, compare this to the Ancel FX9000 I reviewed earlier in the year. It’s about the same price 👍
Considering this tool has a 1 year subscription of $50/vehicle manufacturer per year, would you still consider it to be comparable to the Ancel in cost of ownership? As a DIYer, I have four vehicles that I would use this on, so this unit s costing me $200 a year to use.
@@Pmeyer1226 Great question! I find the aftermarket scan tools are hit and miss; you will get features connected to some cars that you wouldn’t on others. If you just want to read codes and data values, the Ancel FX9000 is great; it also does basic service features. The ThinkTool premium software is great, but again, you’d have to buy it to confirm what it does. And like to say could get expensive! They have just sent me an Ancel DS600 and I’m impressed (video coming soon). It seems to have the premium BMW software as standard and does bi directional features in my Suzuki that I’ve only seen on top level Autel units. If you want that extra functionality, save up and get something more capable out the box 👍
This bi-directional scan tool can it reset fuel composition reset or can i disconnect the battery to reset the fuel composition reset thank you keep doing videos is a 2015 GMC Sierra 4whl drive 5.3 flex fuel
It depends on the vehicle but I would say this basic info that it should be able to display for most vehicles. I have found that the tool generally shows the same data as the factory dealer tool; so if it’s not available, it’s because the dealer tool doesn’t show it either…
Not sure Barry sorry. If it’s a feature on the dealer tool, then there is a good chance you’ll get it with the premium brand software upgrade. But I don’t know for sure
@@MechanicMindset thank you for the reply. I’m going to find out this weekend and I’ll let you know. Great information btw…. I love this scanner for sub $300 on sale!!
Not from standard, but possibly if you buy the manufacturer software. That’s if the manufacturer support the feature in the first place. Do you mean turn of short term fuel trim?
Hi, no - you get free updates for all the basic features! In my tool, only the premium BMW software will stop, I will still have the standard features and bi directional capability. Great value!
thanks for video since you have had time with the device,,,,is there yearly subscription, cost on updates, encoding options....is there extra charges? can you program key, ignition, fob....can you code ecm, ecu?
Hi, I was told there are no yearly update costs (except for if you get the premium brand software like I did $50py). I think it depends on the brand whether you can do key updates; they are all different. I don’t think there is a possibility to code/program engine ECU

@@Sales365 OK cool, I have used Launch based ThinkTool and Top range Autel, and I have the same issue with both. In my opinion, the Autel is probably the one to go for, but depends on your budget. Not out of the box, I had to buy the premium software for those features. Good value for money if you work on one brand of car, or DIY. If you want more, get some a bit more expensive and all the premium software is included for all brands (see the ThinkTool master video I just made) 👍
you may need to pay for the specific brand you want to work on. If bi-directional is important, I'd spend a bit more for a tool that has the feature already

You can get HUMZOR dose the every thing the MINI can do for under 200 you use your cell phone and can carry the DONGAL in your glove box so you have it with you all the time since you don't break down in your driveway
Hello Sir. This was an awesome detailed review. I have considered this tool but one option I want is to have is to flash The bcm on a gmc vehicle. I don’t recall hearing any of that info. Can you advise if this tool does that and if it doesn’t which one does? When searching the web for that particular function in a bi directional scanner , this tool pops up this tool appears.
Are the injector correction values shown in the live data stream of this tool in the free version of the software? I’m looking for a scan tool so I can monitor these values seeing that my vehicle is known to have diesel injector failure problems. I think it would be quite handy to monitor my injectors and in the event that they do fail in future I can just pay the 50 dollars to get the coding functions an replace my injectors.
Hi, no they were only on premium. The injector correction values are a diagnostic test performed by the ECU and the manufacturer has to pay for that feature from Bosch or whoever. This means not all cars have it, and if they did it might not be so straight forward to access them. Hope that helps!
You buy it directly on the tool, it’s pretty easy. Yes 👍 you can buy premium software for other brands too. If you’re going buy a few brands, pay a bit more for something like Ancel DS600; all premium software is included.
I have the thinktool mini and it's a great scanner and gets live data and fault codes from every module of the car. It doesn't do bi-directional unless you pay $50 per car make as I understand. I haven't paid that yet as I haven't needed it. It also has an excellent battery life. I do find some of the interface quirky though like creating reports and stuff. I deleted a few specific items in the history and it proceeded to delete some diag reports that I DID NOT want it to delete. So weird. I'm also having a little bit of buyer remorse after finding out that the Xtool gives lifetime bi-directional updates for less than 300 dollar device! I may be selling the think tool as this is a hell of an offer.
@@MechanicMindset The Xtool A30 pro and the A30M BT dongle (for 175 on amazon) have bi-directional and lifetime updates. Not sure if they can do Immo key programming or ECU coding. I think they can.
Just going off topic but can you tell me if the Hantek ht25 cop can be used with the right adapter on the snap on versus if so how would I ground the probe.. thanks for your videos very informative...
Thanks for the quick reply much appreciated one last thing I assume i would need to ground the probe to the car and not just rely on the scanner ground your help is greatly appreciated..
@@jeffreypugh5191 I would avoid connecting to the obd port jus in case of a possibility that there is an insulation problem on the HT lead - it might choose to ground through the tool (but I’m not familiar with the snap on too). The ground on the HT25 lead is designed to protect against such issues. 👍
Thanks for your simple but highly professional review. I have been searching for a bi-directional scan tool for the last few days.. The more I searched, the more confused I got! What I know for sure is that the scan tools in the low price range are not "one size fits all" but I am trying to get the most for my money. Besides, my needs may be different. Here is a general description of what I need: Bi-directional. Being able to communicate and give commands to various components (actuation) I am currently working on a 2015 VW Passat with unfunctional HVAC mode door. I have to take a big part of the dash off to get to the door mode actuator. It would be nice if I can check it with a scanner. It may simply be needed to reset/reprogram it since the battery was dead for a while. I prefer the wireless ones but I sacrifice more features to that. Access to print & keep track of jobs since my plan is to be more of a mechanic in the future; more likely in VW. TPMS reset since it is a common MIL, Having PCM programming or IMMO service but not a must Preferably free life updates or a minimum of two years. My max budget is $1000 but more comfortable on under $700. I don't mind paying extra for premium software (like $49 you paid) for extra functionality if I needed. I'm also interested in getting your membership. Can I get your advice if I get a membership? I am in the US. The majority of vehicles are Asians and domestic. Thanks
I will give you my advice either way! (Or my opinion 😁) This tool is great for DIY, maybe if you have 1 or 2 different car brands. Or only work on one brand of car. It’s good, the features are there, but may be restricted if you want to use it on other cars. It will read fault codes and give live data, plus some service functions for all cars, no subscription needed. Check out the other ThinkTool video I just made. Give you an idea of what they can do; they make very similar tools at a lower price. Or if you just do VW, get ODIS with the dealer tool; it might not be as expensive as you think and can use it for €9 per hour
@@MechanicMindset Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! What I have found more is that buying a scan tool is more confusing than filing an IRS tax return! That takes me about three days but I am still shopping for the scan tool! I researched more and for some reason (!) there is normally a few hundred dollars difference on the same exact item on eBay! I narrowed down my selection to ThinkTool Pro Elite for about $700 or Launch X431 V Elite (Chinese version) for about $800. They are both 2022 versions. Interestingly, Launch USA does not support Chinese versions purchased through eBay or Amazon! It must have been purchased from their own authorized reps and I think the overseas versions have less to do with the US domestic vehicles than the Launch USA. I am leaning more towards the Launch but my last question (hope so!) is if I have the same choice as ThinkTool Mini to purchase an additional premium if I need it on either one?
@@merrinomay7986 I don't know if you will be able to read this; I have a 2017 VW Golf and the TPMS reset is doable on the instrument cluster while you are sitting in the car. Basically, you can put air in the tires and set the computer to accept those air pressures as the base line. If you are talking about moving around the TPMS sensors or replacing them and reprogramming the module to recognize them, that I don't know how to do.
@@MechanicMindset Is the purchase of the service functions of a given brand indefinite? I would like to code a new lamp in a BMW F11, in which module do I have to look for this option? My friend has a BMW from the USA, could I use this diagnostic scanner to change the frequency setting of the car radio to European? and change the language on the display? Maybe You know? @@sebczajna700 Might be best to contact ThinkCar directly. John kindly made a video showing VW features, would be similar for Audi ruclips.net/video/EvUdh2oG5JY/видео.html
If this is like the thinkdiag, bidirectional control may only be one component at a time. (ex. can't activate purge and vent valves simultaneously) This makes it useless for testing some "purge and seal" evap systems. Also, graphing is limited to one graph. Any PID's selected are smashed into one graph, limiting its usefulness.
Yeah I couldn’t see the option to apply multiple activations at once. I’ve not seen this on many dealer tools either. It could be something that comes with the premium manufacturer software; the features I got with the BMW software were all familiar from dealer diag. If the manufacturer has a specific test plan it may do it there. You can combine separate data on to one graph, it looked similar to what Autel does. I suppose that could be an issue for the auto scaling feature
We do some bi-directional functions in this video with the Mini 9:00 If you want a full bi-directional tool, you’ll need to spend a bit more. Check out the ThinkTool Master video I published recently. Does all brands out the box plus programming. But it’s a little more expensive.
Also, Are You Aware Of the ThinkScan Max? How does this Compare to This ThinkCar Mini?? Looks Like They're Similar in Functions? What Are The Differences? I'm trying to Decide Before I Buy.
Great video! You are the only thinkcar video (I’ve watched many) that has stated thinkcar runs off Launch software! Great info. I been stuck on which brand too get. I like the launch a lot.
Cheers! I have an Ancel which is also Launch based (though they say it’s not). I like it, pretty fast. But using the manufacturer upgrade does slow it down a bit. I think it’s just because it’s evaluating every and loading the functions that are available 👍
Not sure, I found the site saying lifetime updates for core features. The manufacturer software I bought is only 1 year. I will try to get clarification
Would this be worth getting for older cars? 2000 - 2010 Hondas and VW? I have a few innova scanners that work for pulling codes and monitoring live data but would like a bit more options such as more live data and EVAP tests
Hi, I have found that with these cheaper scanners, there is no definitive answer for its capability with each model/year. The manufacturer doesn’t even know, I’ve asked! I reckon the VW premium software will be good on this tool. I was impressed with the BMW add on. As for basic bi directional features, my Suzuki there was nothing, for my BMW you saw in the video. It’s definitely worth it compared to other scanners for the same price 👍
Awesome, you won’t be disappointed. Lots of features out the box, if you know ISTA then the $50 upgrade for BMW will bring lots of familiar dealer level functions 👍 *just remember to update everything first
So without purchasing the manufacturer specific software at $50 a pop, it is an OBDII only scanner. Core functions don't include enhanced manufacturer data. Correct??
Hi, you get fault code read/live data for all modules, bi directional component activations and service/maintenance functions out of the box. Lifetime free updates from what I have found. The manufacturer specific software had features I have only ever seen on dealer diagnostics - well worth it in my opinion. BMW AOS online is €9 per hour….plus the $$$$ you have to spend on the hardware.
Darren just a quick question. I’m about to purchase but I noticed nobody has mention communication codes ( CAN ). Does it show any topology pictures. Like what systems are on CAN HI CAN LO Not that it will change my mind I still want to add another scanner to toolbox. Thanks buddy 😊
Hi Artie, currently the tool doesn’t display the network topology. It will store CAN communication codes. I haven’t tested it on a CAN fault, so not sure if it just ignores non communication models or flags them as not responding. With the BMW update I bought it cam pull the vehicle order so it is capable, just not sure if it does or not. 👍
@@MechanicMindset thanks Darren still looks like a pretty good buy. Are you going to try any of the add one like the thermal imager or scope. If you get to do so I’m sure you’ll post a video. Thanks for all your help. Stay safe and well Artie 👍

Hi like your review, I live in Australia and have a VZ commodore which is GM I'm wondering if the thinktool mini would recognise it ? Or have to purchase GM update ?
Hi, I’m not sure if it is compatible, I would hope so as GM is worldwide! You can check online I think. The purchase update will just unlock extra features like bi-directional component activation and dealer tool features
Hi, they assure me that as long as it is mentioned in the notes, they will honour it (it won’t show on the check out like the discount code). Email me on darren@mechanicmindset.com with your name and I’ll contact them to make sure they do 👍
Darren this really looks like an excellent tool. I will definitely check it out plus look for Honda specifics. I have a launch mini x431 but this seems to have some added features. Thank you for sharing. Your videos are very helpful. And the fact you can add things to it like heat imager and scope makes it quite interesting. Thanks again buddy stay safe and well in these chaotic times 👍😊
Hey Artie, I am genuinely impressed. Only $30 more than the Ancel FX9000 I shared before. His has some serious capability. But again, it’s not equal for all vehicle models. Hope you are staying safe, things are starting to calm down a bit over here and get back to normal 👍
Great question; in simplest terms, it means the tool can get the car to do things. The most common assumption is that you can activate components using a bi-directional tool, but it might also cover things like coding, programming and system calibrations etc. hope that helps!
Thanks for a excellent review, I see that it does automatic VIN ,I have had to change my ECU on my Toyota I need to change back to the cars proper VIN in the exchange ECU to fully activate the alarm/immobilizer, is it possible to do this with this ThinkTool Thanks again
After watching this video I bought this scantool about a year ago. Worked amazing! Untill recently.... . Long story short: My dongle failed to connect, I got a new dongle: same issue occured after a few times using it! I have some BIG issues with "technical support". After my thinktool Mini dongle failed. They keep asking me for screenshots and video's, which I provided, but still after a month!! corresponding untill now, they haven't provide me with any solution yet. They persist they need a screenshot/video of an error message that only occured once before it failed completely. And I'm not filming every time I use my scantool, so I wasn't able to capture that one moment.... I sent a video already twice of what's happening now when I try to connect. Explained many times, step by step what exactly happened... But they keep going in circles, asking me the same questions again and again! And this is already going on now for a month!!!! Very very frustrating! Support is useless!! I will share this bad experience on every platform possible. So people who are concidering buying a thinktool: think twice!
@@MechanicMindset it looks amazing and great price i also like the fact that you can make it into a scope by buying the add on which is what I'm looking for to monitor wave patterns
So you have to buy the scanner and then you have to buy the software for every manufacturer that you want to scan? BMW $50? Toyota $50? Dodge $50? Chevy $50? Ford $50? Audi $50?
It works out the box as a scanner for all the makes listed. If you want the extra functionality of the manufacturer diag (like coding and bi-directional), you need to pay the extra. It's probably more suited for DIY; if you're pro, spend more and get the tool with it already loaded (see my ThinkTool Master video), and do programming too
Seems like a very worthwhile scan tool. Is the additional manufacturers software vehicle specific or just simply Ford, for instance. I watched your use of the Ancel FX9000 but that lead me to the Ancel V6 Pro which has some bidirectional features. Have you investigated the V6 Pro at all? This Think Tool seems pretty sweet. Again, thank you for all of your efforts!!!! Greatly appreciated!!!
To be honest, it’s pretty good out the box with bi directional. Unless you were predominantly working on single brands like a specialist, you might not need it. On the $50 upgrade a lot of the features are familiar from dealer diagnostics, so to turn this in to a BMW dealer level scanner for $50 is well worth it IMO. €9 per hour for using BMW AOS online, plus you have to buy their kit which is $$$$ 👍
@@MechanicMindset thanks. It would be nice to see it on a car without the 50 dollar upgrade.Do you reckon without the upgrade isn't similar to Launch x431?
@@benjaminabel8596 not really you could have the best tool on the market but if you don't know what you are looking At it's a waste of time. A good tec could use obd 2 and make good dinostics
Problem is it $50 for each car you want to have full diagnostics for. There is no provision for full usability. Like if I have a car I would like to cycle a system just to check if it is working it's $50 a pop. This is not economical.
It would be good if they had a higher level subscription where you could access all or a number of your choice. But to be honest, the dealer level features this unlocked for BMW, you would have to pay €9 per hour on AOS. Do you know if any tools that give all dealer level functions for one package?
Hi ... Very interesting video. Couple of quick Q's ... The unit runs on its own battery (Any battery in the world only takes so many charges and then dies!) ... Can the '''internal''' battery be replaced; if so, how, and what is the cost of a new internal battery ... !? Plus; what is the average cost of each module that you may have to purchase to use this '''host''' computer ... !? And; no disrespect ... At the start; are you not purchasing an expensive '''empty''' box; of which, at a short later date, you then have to pay all sorts of money to have standard modules to run this '''host''' computer ... !? Summary ... Looks great at the start; however, is going to get very expensive later ... !? Best ... William (Southampton, Hampshire, UK)

I bought one few months ago and after the update, it can only read DTC code. I complain to the TECH support, they said that it comes as plain reader only, and if you want bi-directional you have to pay extra $50.00 each for those additional functions. You are better off buying a fully bi-directional D8 Xtool BT and be done with. The ones they sent to reviewers are fully loaded software. The Think tool mini is just plain vanilla code reader, no testing function.
Hi, I paid for the premium software with my own money to show what you get. It definitely doesn’t come with all the premium loaded. I need to follow up with a look at what you get out the box, but I think I remember there being a couple of bi-directional features before I installed the premium software. But for sure, if you are pro and want something to work on multiple brands, get something more expensive. I think this tool might be aimed at DIY & enthusiasts. Great for the money though! To be able to have the option to upgrade, not many other tools offer that. Thanks!
Sorry but this is a misleading ‘review’ there is no bidirectional/actuation tests out of the box. $50 per manufacturer per year… Is the top don / mucar equivalent scanner the same?
Sorry, I got excited about the dealer level functions. It does indeed come with bi-directional out of the box, it will of course depend on the vehicle you connect to. Not from standard, but possibly if you buy the manufacturer software. That’s if the manufacturer support the feature in the first place. Do you mean turn of short term fuel trim?
My friend does the device stop working if 50 dollars are not paid is it necessary to update it to keep it working
Hi, no - you get free updates for all the basic features! In my tool, only the premium BMW software will stop, I will still have the standard features and bi directional capability. Great value!
Dose it have a misfire counter?
thanks for video since you have had time with the device,,,,is there yearly
subscription, cost on updates, encoding options....is there extra charges? can you program key, ignition, fob....can you code ecm, ecu?
Hi, I was told there are no yearly update costs (except for if you get the premium brand software like I did $50py). I think it depends on the brand whether you can do key updates; they are all different. I don’t think there is a possibility to code/program engine ECU

Hello, Does the ThinkCar Mini Come With ECU Coding and All Those Diagnostic Features Stock Out Of The Box??
Not out of the box, I had to buy the premium software for those features. Good value for money if you work on one brand of car, or DIY.
If you want more, get some a bit more expensive and all the premium software is included for all brands (see the ThinkTool master video I just made) 👍
Just a question. Do I need to pay or purchase the bi-directional functions and other special functions before I can use it?
you may need to pay for the specific brand you want to work on. If bi-directional is important, I'd spend a bit more for a tool that has the feature already

Yes, it looks like this is available out of the box; you might have seen it in the list towards the end of the video 👍

Great question! I found a page online stating free lifetime updates. Not including the premium manufacturer software I demo here; that’s 1 year 👍

@@MechanicMindset Yes that helps greatly. Thank you kindly for your response.
Where do you get the BMW software and also, can special software for other cars be bought as well for this scanner?
You buy it directly on the tool, it’s pretty easy.
Yes 👍 you can buy premium software for other brands too.
If you’re going buy a few brands, pay a bit more for something like Ancel DS600; all premium software is included.
does this tool does mileage correction?
Possibly, but only at a manufacturer level. I’m not sure if you could ‘correct’ to mileages that are already correct in other modules
Thanks for the feedback. I was impressed with the features on this for the price, and the ability to upgrade.

Here is a general description of what I need:
Bi-directional.
TPMS reset since it is a common MIL, Having PCM programming or IMMO service but not a must
Preferably free life updates or a minimum of two years.
(Or my opinion 😁)
This tool is great for DIY, maybe if you have 1 or 2 different car brands.

Bro with the thinkdiag + you can graph 4 at one time
I contacted Think car and they told me that the platinum S6 model provides bidirectional controls, not the Mini model
We do some bi-directional functions in this video with the Mini 9:00
If you want a full bi-directional tool, you’ll need to spend a bit more. Check out the ThinkTool Master video I published recently. Does all brands out the box plus programming. But it’s a little more expensive.

There is only one year of free updates, some sights show Life Time Free Updates. Do you know why?
Not sure, I found the site saying lifetime updates for core features. The manufacturer software I bought is only 1 year. I will try to get clarification
@@MechanicMindset Thanks,
Would this be worth getting for older cars?
Great review. Just snagged this scanner. Was looking for a sub 2k cost scanner that was fairly functional on a BMW.

It works out the box as a scanner for all the makes listed. If you want the extra functionality of the manufacturer diag (like coding and bi-directional), you need to pay the extra. Nice tool but the 50 euro per car brands makes it very expensive and only for one year.

I've just bought the artidiag 800 bt it's awesome free updates I did buy the foxwell nt726 but sent it back as wasn't quite what it claimed the 800 bt is awesome it found a code that the nt726 missed
@@rockyfish3115 Awesome! Yes they all seem to be the same tools just rebranded. Just took delivery of an Ancel DS600 - had a little play, I’m impressed, much better bi directional capability. Video soon 👍
$50 per manufacturer per year…
Is the top don / mucar equivalent scanner the same?
Sorry, I got excited about the dealer level functions. It does indeed come with bi-directional out of the box, it will of course depend on the vehicle you connect to. Body module had a lot of actuation on standard software for this car. This is Launch based and as I understand, so are TooDon. Not looked at Mucar. I pick up a new VW this week so will plug in to that and see what we get 👍
@@MechanicMindset I’m guessing you don’t really know how much the tool will do until you’re plugged into the vehicle. For me support for Dpf regen , reductant system resets etc are a must. I’d be interested to hear from you what you find on the VW 👍
@@vauxtips6687 Yeah DPF and SCR were in the list as standard for service features. You’re right, it’s a bit annoying you don’t know what it will do till you plug it in 👍
Great review 👍
Good tool only why is there no service for electric cars? Because it's normal
It Says it has Lifetime Free Updates... But, you know that phrase has so many tricky meanings.... So does that Mean you have Free Lifetime All Vehicle Support Without a Yearly Subscription??
I know what you mean! My understanding was free updates for the base software. So yes.
Of course I bought the BMW upgrade which is $50 per year to keep. It might be worth clarifying directly with ThinkCar but I’m sure I saw it on the website
@@MechanicMindset Oh I See... I think I got a hang of how these things work.. When they say "Free Lifetime Updates" its for their OBD2 Device not for Different Car Manufacturer Specific Features/Capabilities..?
Looks a great tool mate
I was pretty impressed; especially for $370 with the discount!
That’s a cracking tool for the money!
I was impressed, especially with the dealer level functions on premium. What’s your go to scan tool?👍
Autel MS908. But looking for a new toy now 😊
@@OneAuto Autel are hard to beat. Had a few go’s with the MS909, network topology feature nice!
