There is evidence that in some eastern churches in early Christianity, there were catechumens baptized at the end of the period. This is of course the same phenomenon that gave rise to Lent. Different churches, different liturgical seasons. (Saying these things is totally in tune with your reflections.) Both Advent and Lent are both properly opportunities to reflect on and deepen our baptismal commitments.

That's why I feel like we should be grateful for Lord's patience and grace for us, for that's the only thing keeping some of us from his judgement.
I can understand why Advent is a lost season. After Halloween, people overlook Advent and look forward to Christmas Day. After December 25th, people are preparing for Ash Wednesday and Lent. We have Advent books. Stores are selling Advent calendars. (Lego got Advent calendars.) Yet, people still overlook the Advent season.
Those advent calendars can be part of the problem. Espescially those where you get something everyday. When Christmas comes, pepleare done getting stuff. I know children who have four advent calendars, all with stuff everyday. My own children are very happy with just a picture one, thanks be to God! My darling daughter is fasting sweets, except she gets them gifted or if we bake Christmas cookies. My son fasts youtube videos to prepare. They are wonderful childreen that bring joy all around. But my catechesis students give another picture... they were stunned at the thought of willingly giving up something during advent, which is seen more as Christmas time. It seemed noone ever told them about that possibility. Granted, it is my first year as a catechist, so they did not hear me rattle on about cool catholic stuff for long, so i hope i can plant some seeds. Poor catechesis is surely one of the reasons advent is losing it's flavour. Barely anyone going to mass and hearing the apocalyptic reading is another
It should be noted that in both the breviary and Mass, the readings toward the end of OT are apocalyptic making the transition between advent and OT very smooth, among other things
Just got hammered by a winter storm here, 5 feet in two days. It was somewhat apocalyptic - trees down, power out for days. People wondering down the street. My old Independent Baptist congregation did a Rapture themed Christmas cantata when I was a kid and the connection between Advent (which they never referred to by name) and the Apocalypse has always kind of stuck.
I love the Lectionary-it's such a stern reminder to me (easily distracted, frequently lax in devotion) that we BEGIN the Liturgical Year anticipating the END OF THE WORLD. Joe: get ready for the APOCALYPSE •sips coffee• John McClane came to bait Hans Gruber-a consummate liar, by the way-into seeking to defeat him while he held a captive people in bondage to amass wordly glory and wealth (an exceptional thief, after all). He passes through a trial like death to defeat this foe and ransom the hostages at Nakatomi Plaza. I think I just convinced myself that Die Hard is an EASTER movie.
I was reading something by an Orthodox author one time [I am a western rite Catholic who took St John Paul II's 'Orientale Lumen' to heart and is trying to 'breath with both lungs' - east and west] where they mentioned the "Greater and Lesser Lent" of the liturgical year. As a Catholic, I was like, I thought there was one Lent, prior to Easter. After an investigation, it turned out "Lesser Lent" is the period just prior to and leading up to Christmas. I guess it is "lesser" because the time period isn't as long as the forty day / "greater" just prior to Easter. Calling this time "Advent" seems to allude to "coming", arrival, hope; and calling it "Lesser Lent" seems to allude to the preparation of conversion. Thank you for the insightful, explanatory references from the General Norms on the Liturgy and the Directory of Piety. Great contextual prep. I now have two new sources for personal rmeditation. Thanks.
Love the content. The microphone picked up some odd frequency that really made it a struggle for my sensitive ears. I got it done, watched it in parts! Thanks always!
I have been a bit of a Grinch towards some co-workers for putting up their Christmas decorations in their cubicles the day after Halloween. Fortunately we are all good friends so they know it’s more like gentle teasing on my part. 😅 But I do find it kind of annoying just how early Christmas decorations creep up in most stores nowadays. I expect such behavior from places like Hobby Lobby, not every store in the area. This year I am definitely trying to be more meditative for Advent and cultivating a prayer life reset. It’s been a semi-chaotic calendar year for me, so it’s nice to have some time to slow down and remember what it’s all about: The prophesied end of the world 😉
Joe, thanks for focusing us folks. I’ll only add from Bishop Barron’s sermon that there are really three comings we need to focus on during Advent: past, present and future. In addition to the Incarnation and 2nd Coming, he reminds us that Christ comes to us in our current lives. I think you got to that in a different way with “waiting, conversion and hope.”
Extremely insightful and apt for our times. Thank you Joe! Also, an annual Advent fight: how early is too early for Christmas decorations and Christmas Music?

Extra comment cause I forgot about the Catholic Advent list. To add, I’ve been seeing a lot of online Catholics claiming Mary had NO sort of pain when birthing Jesus, so any depiction of her having any semblance of an intensive labor are ‘blasphemous,’ which I think drives a lot of non-Catholics and even reasonable Catholics away. Yea, Mary had a miraculous pregnancy and birth, but her body still had to undergo a lot of changes normally associated with pregnancy so a bit of pain or discomfort shouldn’t be thought of as a “heresy” against her immaculate state. Curious what is actual Church teaching on our understanding of what Mary might have experienced and what is more like personal theological opinion and (quite frankly) extreme Marian-ology. Another fun topic is Joseph’s age, as Mother Angelica humorously states “old men don’t walk to Egypt” but I can’t imagine him being a sprite young man just on the back cusp of adulthood. Some ideas on what sort of man Joseph would have had to be in order to be a good provider for a very young Mary and be trusted to guard her vow of virginity would be interesting to explore.
Mary never made any vow of virginity. Judaism has no such thing. Her marriage to Joseph would not have been legal in Judaism or even later in Christianity had she remained a virgin after Jesus was born. Right up to today failure to consummate a marriage is grounds for annulment in Catholicism, meaning no legal marriage has ever existed.
I'm protestant, I have found different views about Mary's birth pain. I personally like the one where she felt no birth pain because she reversed the curse of child bearing pain. At least for her own labor. I don't think she had a vow of virginity but her and Joseph made the decision to remain virgins together. I don't believe Joseph was a old man or had other children. I believe he was a righteous man. My view of Joseph is shared by Jerome and some catholics but I don't know what the official teaching is for you. There is a 2nd century document called the proto evangelium of James that supports the immaculate conception and perpetual virginity. It does say Joseph was old with other kids. Eusebius claims the document was written by a sect that would abstain from worldly pleasure and not James. St. Thomas Aquinas points out errors in it aswell. It's still a good read.
@@Traditional_Maybe The Protoevangelium of James was declared heresy in 405. So it's quite ironic that the sole source of the dogma that Mary was a perpetual virgin is heresy.
@@Traditional_Maybe I have heard of the Proto Evangelium of James and the various scholarship and research people have done on it, but haven’t been able to read it all myself yet. I know there are some blatantly heretical things in there, some very odd things like Jesus turning clay birds real and smiting another kid when he was little, and some stuff that could be factual or at least the best thing we got from that time period. I take stuff like that to have grains of truth, but we have difficulty confirming it cause of our distance in time from it and the lack of collaborating sources. Stuff about Mary’s parents being named Anne and Joachim I can buy, and definitely the idea of Joseph being noticeably older than Mary. Still discerning if he had children from a prior marriage, but I tend to lean more towards “no” because none of the older siblings were there for Jesus to give Mary to, as even if she was only their step mother there would still be some obligation for them to care for her. I still think some pregnancy discomfort was experienced by Mary, only because if she did nurture Jesus in her womb then her body had to have undergone some change to accommodate him. And gravity still takes hold of ya when you got a growing baby in your stomach and walking around everywhere. I do know some ladies who had pretty long, bad labors that left them hoarse, and I know some who popped the kid out within an hour with minimum pain or issue. I acknowledge Mary was specially set apart so she could make a true “yes” to God to carry and raise Jesus, but I’m also okay with her experiencing some discomfort in the physical world. If she had an idea what her son would go through in his adult life, I have no doubt she would have desired to share in some of his pain during her labor. But then again, it’s all based on my own opinion and how I view Mary’s relationship with her son and God. Plus, God cursed Eve with multiplied childbirth pains, not an introduction to them. So I think there would always have been some discomfort with childbearing cause having one’s body shifting around physically, chemically, and hormonally is bound to do that to someone.
Well.... putting Christ King to the end of the "ordinary time" (what an awful name anyway) is a modernistic change shortly, actually to change its meaning 😂 Now it points to the Kingdom somewhen. Originally this feast was about His reigning here and now. It was one month earlier and was celebrated with big youth processions and so on
Judas Maccabeus rededicated the temple on the 25th day of Kislev which is Hanukkah and occurs in December. The Christians replaced it with Christmas on the 25th of December. It replaced a Jewish holiday, not a pagan one.
The exact date of the birth is not of much importance and bear in mind the date is not a matter of doctrine. What is much important is that we celebrate (in proximity) the Incarnation of Christ -- the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us and saved us from our sins.
Advent debates: is 4pm too early for Christmas (Eve) Mass Should presents be given on Epiphany instead Do you put the Baby in the manger of the creche And the new one I've seen: is Ordinary time after Christmas even a real thing
Why do Catholic Apologists often say rhetorically that ‘ordinary Catholics’ don’t know ‘this’ or ‘that’. It’s unnecessarily denigrating. A rudimentary sense of what a liturgical season means is generally understood by Catholics who attend Church anywhere in the world, without limiting the discussion to ‘Americans’ only. Secondly, the demands for personal salvation required by the Church for personal sanctity does not require we seek to become armchair theologians of any sort. So, please, Catholic Apologists note this: there is no need to go on and on insinuating Catholics lack the knowledge of a faith trivia guru. Just say what you want to highlight, teach or share. It’s OK for Catholics not to know these things, and catch up or forget such things which are not essentials for sanctity. 😊😂
1.) Black Friday is kinda scary, do you really need it that badly? 2.) ‘Advent’ calendar. Case closed. 3.) Die Hard is the best Christmas movie. Yipee ki yay. 4.) No, he did not. Cool story tho. 5.) Yes. 6.) Rose is a subset of the color pink. 7.) See you at Epiphany! BONUS: No, Christmas is not all plagiarized pagan ceremonies.
Yeah this isn't even remotely secret, it's very obvious. Also for those parents with small children: I highly recommend reading the readings prior to mass.
I should add that a priest recently told us to not forget that we are preparing our hearts for the birth of christ, not just for the second coming. He didn't want us getting too focused on the apocalypse, funnily enough.
Why would one want to celebrate Christ's birth? Christ has come, lived and died and rose again, and his people await his second coming with longing to see him. There's much debate as to exactly when the birth of Jesus occurred. Personally i don't believe it was the 25th of December. People need to be reminded the Jesus is not a baby every 25th, he sits at the right of God waiting till all his enemies are put down, the last enemy is death.
It doesn't. Rather, to cover more Scripture in the liturgy, the readings are different over a three-years cycle, but the actual holy days are the same year by year.
If you do not know where you will go if you died right now then you deny CHRIST because you deny what HE said as follows: John 3:14 KJV "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the SON OF MAN (CHRIST) be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believes in HIM should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For GOD so loved the world, that HE gave HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, that whosoever believes in HIM should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For GOD sent not HIS SON into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through HIM might be saved. 18 He that believes on HIM is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the NAME of the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD." 36 He that believes on the SON has everlasting life: and he that believes not the SON shall not see life; but the wrath of GOD abides on him. Note: A true believer is saved from hell, has eternal everlasing life, and is not condemned because CHRIST paid the penalty for sin which is death for us in our place. CHRIST said repent and believe this good news Mark 1:15 KJV.
@@ji8044 Then why was HE crucified and say "it is finished." *** Hebrews 10:12 KJV "But this MAN (JESUS CHRIST), after "HE had offered ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOREVER" sat down on the right hand of GOD 14 For by ONE OFFERING (CHRIST shedding HIS real blood and giving HIS real body on a real cross) HE has PERFECTED FOREVER (saved) them that are sanctified (forgiven of all sins) 18 Now where remission of these (sins) is, "there is NO MORE OFFERING FOR SIN" (Parenthesis mine)

Thanks for this, God bless.
This was a good supplement to the homily from our priest last Sunday, you helped me to understand it better. Thanks!
Bishop Barton’s homily as well as Fr. Mike Schmitz’ are available on RUclips. Both very worthwhile regarding Advent.
Good list. The morality of the Santa prank could be added, though maybe not annual. I defend it, even though many discourage or condemn it.
It should be noted that in both the breviary and Mass, the readings toward the end of OT are apocalyptic making the transition between advent and OT very smooth, among other things
In my family Christmas starts Christmas Eve, when the tree goes up and ends on Twelfth Night, when the tree comes down.
That is one way of getting into the Advent season! Yikes.
First snow fall in Ottawa capital of the frozen north, appreciate your contribution to understanding the Truth. Doug/Ottawa

I love the Lectionary-it's such a stern reminder to me (easily distracted, frequently lax in devotion) that we BEGIN the Liturgical Year anticipating the END OF THE WORLD.
Joe: get ready for the APOCALYPSE •sips coffee•
John McClane came to bait Hans Gruber-a consummate liar, by the way-into seeking to defeat him while he held a captive people in bondage to amass wordly glory and wealth (an exceptional thief, after all). He passes through a trial like death to defeat this foe and ransom the hostages at Nakatomi Plaza. I think I just convinced myself that Die Hard is an EASTER movie.
Lethal Weapon. Also a Christmas movie!!

Thanks.
Many thanks!
But I do find it kind of annoying just how early Christmas decorations creep up in most stores nowadays. I expect such behavior from places like Hobby Lobby, not every store in the area.
This year I am definitely trying to be more meditative for Advent and cultivating a prayer life reset. It’s been a semi-chaotic calendar year for me, so it’s nice to have some time to slow down and remember what it’s all about:
The prophesied end of the world 😉
Thank you for the interesting info. I'm new to the Catholic faith and found it very helpful
Indeed! Christ's threefold coming in history, Mystery, and majesty!
Extremely insightful and apt for our times. Thank you Joe!
Also, an annual Advent fight: how early is too early for Christmas decorations and Christmas Music?
Great video, this is also why advent in penitential in a way but not like lent. I think this has been completely lost on people too.
Thank you Joe for the bonus God bless you.
Die Hard IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE!!!😂

This is why I taught my kids about St Nicholas 😅

My wife and I "fight" over when to decorate. I always want to do it slowly and reach a crescendo at Christmas. She wants to get it over and done. I have never won this fight.
C'mon Chris you're bigger than her. Just pick her up if she argues with you.
Thank you
When things get bad I never say, "It's not the end of the world." Instead I say, "Well, at least we aren't on fire."

Hebrews 9:27-28
New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
27 And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Let's eagerly wait!
Hence the twelve days of Christmas song.
The Lukan passage is about the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70
You should do a "what did Mary Know" episode. That'd be cool from you Joe
I wish the Salvation Army bell ringer a happy advent.

Hi, Joe. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the recent 'Centre Place' Lecture - Papel Supremacy: How The Popes Came To Rule The Church. Thanks, and merry Christmas.
The season of Advent is the season when we Catholics should pray for the Second Coming more than ever!
Do not be afraid of the end times, embrace and welcome them!
The Second Coming is overdue by 2,000 years now.
@@ji8044 It's only overdue if you know the date, and Joe covered who knows that in the vid.
@@scottgun00 Jesus and Paul both said it was going to be within the lifetime of those living in their day. These were failed predictions and you just have to live with that.
@@ji8044 No.
Commenting on the postscript, Diehard is 100% a Christmas movie, so is Fellowship of the Ring.
Christmas season begins on Dec 25? In the Philippines it begins in September and ends in mid-January
In connection with the Mass, should Advent Candles/Wreath should be part of the Catholic Mass (like the blessing and lighting of the candle)?
It is at the parish I attend.
I would have said it begins at about first vespers on Christmas Eve.
Meanwhile Filipinos: Christmas starts September 1st (Blares out Jose Mari Chan and Mariah Carey on loudspeaker while taking out a whole wall of lanterns)
Thanks... Looking forward to Chrsitmas
An Advent Fight:
"That's Heresy, bro!" -said Santa Claus on the Council of Nicea, punching Arius in the face.

"When Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem,
Saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him.
And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him." (Matthew 2:1-3)
@@jendoe9436 Makes sense and you're right it was a multiplication of pain not the introduction of it.
by 2:15 the audio gets all wonky just sayin
I thought that was just me. 😂 THANK YOU for saying.
Sorry! Apparently there was some kind of exporting funkiness, but it's mostly audible on higher-quality headphones. Totally missed it!
I'd say some of this lack of understanding comes from taking out the penitentiary character of Advent after Vatican II.
Well.... putting Christ King to the end of the "ordinary time" (what an awful name anyway) is a modernistic change shortly, actually to change its meaning 😂 Now it points to the Kingdom somewhen. Originally this feast was about His reigning here and now. It was one month earlier and was celebrated with big youth processions and so on
6:03 You meant to put Matthew Chapter 24 :37-39 not Chapter 25.

Great
"Christ was not actually born in december 25, it was a pagan holiday we christianised"
Oh, that's a good one! And also an upcoming episode topic...
Says pagans, atheists and uneducated fools.
That isn't true!!
So there’s no Rapture ✅
Advent debates:
is 4pm too early for Christmas (Eve) Mass
Should presents be given on Epiphany instead
Do you put the Baby in the manger of the creche
And the new one I've seen: is Ordinary time after Christmas even a real thing
3) Um, no. But still a great movie.
6) Can we "meat" in the middle and call them Salmon? Sorry, I could not resist. That was my daughter-in-law's pun.

The author of the new lectionary did had to much drink. That would be only ecsuse for him to cut the warning of unworthy Communion out
They're pink.
In other words, Santa is the anti-Christ :)
Nobody expects . . . the Second Coming of Christ!
This was low-key a Rapture teaching. Be ready at all times.
Who needs to be reminded that Jesus isn't a baby anymore?
How does a liturgical year take 3 years?
It doesn't. Rather, to cover more Scripture in the liturgy, the readings are different over a three-years cycle, but the actual holy days are the same year by year.
If you do not know where you will go if you died right now then you deny CHRIST because you deny what HE said as follows:
John 3:14 KJV "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the SON OF MAN (CHRIST) be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believes in HIM should not perish but have eternal life.
16 For GOD so loved the world, that HE gave HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, that whosoever believes in HIM should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For GOD sent not HIS SON into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through HIM might be saved.
18 He that believes on HIM is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the NAME of the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD."
36 He that believes on the SON has everlasting life: and he that believes not the SON shall not see life; but the wrath of GOD abides on him.
Note: A true believer is saved from hell, has eternal everlasing life, and is not condemned because CHRIST paid the penalty for sin which is death for us in our place. CHRIST said repent and believe this good news Mark 1:15 KJV.
Jesus never said he died for our sins. Original sin is not now and never has been a tenet of Judaism
@@ji8044 Then why was HE crucified and say "it is finished."
*** Hebrews 10:12 KJV "But this MAN (JESUS CHRIST), after "HE had offered ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOREVER" sat down on the right hand of GOD
14 For by ONE OFFERING (CHRIST shedding HIS real blood and giving HIS real body on a real cross) HE has PERFECTED FOREVER (saved) them that are sanctified (forgiven of all sins)
18 Now where remission of these (sins) is, "there is NO MORE OFFERING FOR SIN"
(Parenthesis mine)
@@jacktracy8356 You are correct. Paul created the concept of original sin. It did not exist before. Augustine then took the ball and ran with it creating the doctrine as we know it today. In fact the majority of Christian doctrine comes directly from Augustine's writings in my opinion.
