Don't know if someone already brought this up, but I just reviewed the 5e rules and you don't add your proficiency bonus to the actual damage of the weapon, you only add the ability modifier to damage. Proficiency in a weapon only applies to the attack roll of an attack using the proficient weapon. For example, if character has Proficiency in Longsword (with a Proficiency bonus of 2) and strength ability modifier of plus 3, he would roll for attack of d20 + 5, but the damage (if attack equaled or went above AC) would be 1d8 + 3 slashing damage.
With the stats and how they work, there is a chart that explains it with tomatoes Strength is being able to crush a tomato. Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato. Constitution is being able to eat a rotten tomatoe. Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting tomatoes in a fruit salad. Charisma is selling a tomato based fruit salad. Easiest way to explain their use.
Best way to explain stats is the tomato method. Strength- ability to crush a tomato Dexterity- ability to dodge a tomato Constitution- ability to eat a rotten tomato Intelligence- knowing a tomato is a fruit Wisdom- Knowing not to make a tomato based fruit salad Charisma- ability to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
I've literally spent about 7 hours attempting figuring out how to do it and failing. And no-one thought to tell me to just watch this??? RIP- Anyways TYSM
Stephen, you are 7 different kinds of awesome, Thank You for this! It has been decades since my last campaign and trying to jump back in has been more problematic than I realized. I really appreciate your pace, and the examples you give without over explaining! You give enough info for the player to decide for themselves along with page numbers in the HB for quick reference! The overhead view is perfect for a half blind gamer like myself! Hell, I even picked the same class, and we have pretty much the same handwriting, lol (Thank Shar for erasers!-) This is a great video for someone just getting into tabletop, as well as a concise refresher course for an old school head looking to slang some dice! Thank you again Stephen +50xp with a D12 for Good Karma!
TIP: Use a pencil to fill it out so you can erase and adjust as levels/modifiers/bonuses change. Also, I didn't hear it mentioned but Initiative box is Dex Modifier (and gets added to d20 roll when rolling for initiative)
Super newbie, this was so helpful thanks so much for taking the time to record and share it. Fingers crossed for my half ork (lost as a child and raised by people) Fighter
Thank you so much your tutorial was amazing and I really found it easy to understand cant wait to share with my players. From a newbie DM just getting into DnD this helped alot.
Thanks for this! Trying to figure the game out myself and have a excited kid dying to get playing, had no idea where to begin with the character sheet so only for this video id still be lost!
Just watched it, awesome video, took a minute to understand because I'm actually creating a caster as opposed to my traditional melee character. So I needed to hop back and forth on a few things...but over all this is a great resource tool. Now to help my wife build her character lol
If you can't refer to the player handbook and see the chart for ability score modifiers, then use this formula (x is the ability score): (x-10)/2 rounded down. An example would be that an ability score of 13 would be (13-10)/2 rounded down or a +1 ability score modifier.
You could also divide by 2 round down then subtract 5 you'll get the exact same number 30 ÷2 =15 -5 equals yours +10 or For like 15 instead of saying15-10=5 5÷2 2.5 round down to get you plus 2 you could just 15÷2=7.5 round down 7and then 7-5 also equals your plus 2.. I found it easier doing divide then subtract I don't know why
@michaeltaylor9017 Or for players that are still confused and run away screaming if you explain it with more math ;) The idea is that ordinary people average out at 8 in their abilities, but adventurers are a special bunch and 10 is the average score for them. Therefore the modifier is set at zero for any ability with 10 points. So anything below that gives a negative modifier and anything above a positive one. Every even number (or two steps) the modifier then goes down or up by one. Example: An ability score of 14 is two whole steps above 10, so the modifier is +2 The same is true for the uneven number 15. Only at the next even number, 16, does the modifier go up to +3 Likewise 8 is one step below 10, so the modifier is -1 As it would be with a score of 7. Only an ability score of 6 would drop the modifier down to -2.
Thank you so much for this plus My first character ia a kenku wizard because i was told that i couldn't play as a kenku, it would be to hard so here i am doing that here in a couple days now
If you write a script for your video it will keep you from bouncing around like you are here. It helps the flow and makes a more accessible experience.
one helpful tip when making a physical character sheet, mark your death saves and health in pencil and lightly, if you ever plan on levelling up the same should go for your stats, mods, proficiency bonus, and EXP. Casters should avoid ever inking prepared spells for obvious reasons(I find it most helpful to have my spells in the form of cards so I can easily sort, find, and pick out).
The reason why he put -1 is because that is his dexterity modifier. In play any time combat starts you’d roll a d20 then add or subtract based on your dexterity modifier to determine your turn order.
I'm pretty new myself, so I can't be 100% sure, but I believe it's the stats you use to see if you are affected against something! For example, if your DM says "roll a saving throw against poison", and you are a fighter, you can choose to roll and then add either your strength or constitution modifiers to it? Not sure though tbh
Where do you find inspiration and why was half this so confusing thank got I bought a book before hand your video helped a lot but some that threw me off much love and I do thankyou

lmao hey it works
I cannot begin to tell you how helpful this was.
I was so confused and overwhelmed when I first started out, but this made it so easy to understand.
Best way to explain stats is the tomato method.
Strength- ability to crush a tomato
Dexterity- ability to dodge a tomato
Constitution- ability to eat a rotten tomato
Intelligence- knowing a tomato is a fruit
Wisdom- Knowing not to make a tomato based fruit salad
Charisma- ability to sell a tomato based fruit salad.

Yeah he called it “initiative modifier” at around 19:30
Finally a good video on how to create a character sheet

Just watched this and it helped me create my character. Thank you!! I am playing D&D tomorrow evening for the first time since 20 years ago.
Best video I've found about filling a character sheet. This needs more views.
Helped so much❤ 🙏 Need the help I watched other vids but they were too fast and you go at a steady pace.

Thank you so much for this plus My first character ia a kenku wizard because i was told that i couldn't play as a kenku, it would be to hard so here i am doing that here in a couple days now

Thank you so much I was so confused and had no idea how to even do anything
Tysm! This was incredibly helpful. Making first character and the book wasnt good with explaining. (Wood Elf Rouge)
Thank you so much! I’m an absolute beginner and this really helped.

That was my process too anything with numbers in pencil only name, background and actual permanent info ever got penned
great guide little note, he meant your initiative is your dexterity modifier
thank you for this informative video! im making my first tiefling character :)
why do you always add 1 to the ability scores??
This was a amazing tutorial
"That'll be our armour."
My tortle fighter, who can't wear armour by default:
Thank you! Had a hard time getting clear answers online as most people are intitled and like “it’s in the book are you dumb”
Where did it state the initiative bonus? I can’t find it for the life of me
you are a life saver. Thanks for making this :>
his attack damage is a minimum of 7 plus the d6? that seems pretty powerful. ive been getting very bad attack damage with level one characters.
Wished I saw this earlier... I just got a whole day with my best friend just trying to figure out how to fill it in since none of us knew anything
Great video
Thank you my cleric half elf thanks you
Great video. Thanks so much, incredibly helpful
thank you! im starting to get into DnD
and im making a wood elf fighter!
😊thank you
Thanks so much! Im going to have a play date soon about this game so thanks so much!
this was helpful thank you so much!!
quick question: do you NEED the players handbook for this? I am new to being a dm and am on a very tight budget.
Thanks so much! This is helped me so much!!!!!!
Thank you so much, this video was very informative :D
It was clear and made a lot of sense, too
What class should I use for a skinwalker character?
If you determine your initiative by rolling a d20, how did your character get a -1? I'm learning from scratch here.
The reason why he put -1 is because that is his dexterity modifier. In play any time combat starts you’d roll a d20 then add or subtract based on your dexterity modifier to determine your turn order.
loved it super helpfull!!!!
Thanks that was so helpful
Why is the initiative -1?
it's your dex modifier plus any proficiencies from race or background, but typically just your dex modifier
19:20 im pretty sure he meant dexterity if that was confusing for anyone
yeah so im just sitting here like YEAH what DO i PUT IN THOSE BOXES
Thank you very much
Could you maybe make an eladrin character sheet tutorial your explanation is so good but I'm still too dumb💀
Good video my dude
Poggers😁😁😁😄🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
I had common and draconic as my languages (I was Dragonborn)
I'm here after Grisha's video about my irl character
Is the spell casting page important at all or does it matter
It depends on if you are playing a magic caster or not. For a fighter no but for a wizard yes.
Thank you terry
I used my goes level sheet on super lego logan adventures on uploaded video 📹
What does saving throws mean?
I'm pretty new myself, so I can't be 100% sure, but I believe it's the stats you use to see if you are affected against something! For example, if your DM says "roll a saving throw against poison", and you are a fighter, you can choose to roll and then add either your strength or constitution modifiers to it? Not sure though tbh
Intelligence is book smart. Wisdom is street smart.
For who are watching, never right in pen
For the viewer, increase the playback speed to get through this faster.
Why do you write sideways?
good vid, thx
Warforged barb here
OMG tysm
Where do you find inspiration and why was half this so confusing thank got I bought a book before hand your video helped a lot but some that threw me off much love and I do thankyou
thank you
Why did he put farmer as his characters background. Farmer isn’t a real background
homebrew my guy
I was wondering about that too, particularly as background so can add things to your character sheet too and I was hoping this video would cover that.
D&d has cast confused it's very effective
Thanks
TYSM
Should have called him Vanilla Terry xD
Thank u
It helps but you just leave us at that point we're you left there's still like 10 boxes left
10:09
This video is best viewed at 1.5x playback
Hello Stephen
im not even dumb enough not to get it
😅😅
Why is this so complicated it gives me a headache just watching you making this
this sounds like homework, why the fuck am i doing this
dude there are so many boxes
You spelled Steven wrong
Just a little tip guys, most ability score modifiers aren't used it dnd sessions. So you don't need to fill it out if you don't know what your doing
