    I’m a father, husband, homeowner of a modest house and have a stable job. Never knew my dad, mom was on drugs and was in foster care until emancipated at 17. Sean’s story resonated with me big time. Even though I am making it on the outside I struggle to pull it all together. It’s like my comfort zone is the struggle. I dabble here and there and need to get it right to turn the corner and give myself 100% instead of 50. I see wisdom in this dude and really has me in my feelings. Hoping to get it right. Much love to Sean and all my people in the struggle 💪

      It has been well researched that the subconscious does not respond to deterrent examples, which is why, for example, the words smoking kills or pictures of smoker's lungs on cigarette packets do nothing for nicotine addicts and are therefore nonsense.

      @@helenaneumann1872 I believe it can make a difference. Growing up, I saw people close to me using hard drugs and that was enough for me not to. I was not perfect by any means either, I smoked, smoked marijuana, drank but their actions scared me enough from dabbling in anything heavy.

    • @WinterReflections
      @WinterReflections 2 года назад +9

      @@helenaneumann1872 That's completely different from a person who has actually gone through it themselves and managed to pull themselves together in the end. It's not scare mongering deterrence for kids, it's actual former addicts speaking to current and recovering addicts and letting them know that it IS possible to get better when they don't believe they can change. Addicts in successful recovery sharing their stories with people who are CURRENTLY addicted or struggling to stay clean is very important. It's not at all comparable to scare ads or a DARE program for kids and average people...those don't work. This is for people who have already lived the horrors of addiction and is meant to give hope more than to scare them. An addict already knows how horrible addiction is, they don't need scaring.

    • @helenaneumann1872
      @helenaneumann1872 2 года назад +4

      @@WinterReflections I agree with you. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics are based, among other things, on the principle of supporting one another in abstinence and encouraging one another to make it work. In that sense, clean addicts help clean addicts and those who are struggling. The portrait is again about the question of why relapses occur. My comment was in reference to that and that addicts like Sean are not kept from relapsing simply by knowing about the bad side effects. The drugs change the brain metabolism in such a way that a relapse is possible. The clean addict must be prepared for this, as must doctors and therapists.

    Tho is Sean- and I will read all the comments & thanks everyone I really wanted to answer everyone but over 500 comments in 2 days I’ll never make it! So this is one big THANKS to all the kind comments. A lot of you said I should speak in schools or something and I did kind of- for a while my AA friend took people into a youth prison to talk. Now you do those things at your own expense- there’s no compensation! But it was rewarding. These were 12 & 14 year old inner city youths who had done bad enough stuff to already be in prison- And it was crazy… every time they were all like You mean you DONT DRINK & smoke weed?? Like they had no idea that was even possible!! So I would love to do more of that. For those of you who thought it sounded canned or whatever… try talking about your life. The story doesn’t change. I consider myself a complete F up still and always will. My choices hurt a lot of people & im not proud of them. But it all happened and it’s what I went through & what I put people through & if you’re trying to stay well & stay alive you can not go through life crying, I’ll get high. So I own my shit but I don’t walk around talking about it with any pride- I am completely ashamed of how I acted. I wish I made better choices but all of that is history. I can say this if I’m not using today I can have a decent life. Life without shame of I’m doing today. That’s the best I can offer. But thank you all anyway. So long as you’re not being mean to be mean it has some truth. But hey- I’m ok today. 👌🏿🤷🏿‍♀️

      I think you acted like that because you didn't get the opportunity to learn how to love and take care of yourself. You needed desperately some relieve and drugs gave you that. Don't be hard on yourself. You can still prove yourself that you can lead a good life, don't let blame and guilt prevent you from having the life you deserve to have. The fact that your parents tried their best when u were a child doesn't necessarily mean they were good parents. You had some necessities and they couldn't help you with those, probably because of their own limitations, not because they didn't love you. And that made you incapable of managing your emotions and turning to drugs. So again, don't be hard on yourself. Forgiveness is the key. You deserve a great life 😊❤️

You are so strong and very brave ❤️ Thank you so much for caring for yourself and for people you don't even know!!! I agree! Can we go with “his experience”, instead of “his truth”, though? There is only one truth and it isn’t relative to each person. It’s in the very nature of the word. If I call something “my truth”, that would be silly, as the truth is the truth is the truth.
      “He owned his experience”, though, that checks out.
      It may seem pedantic, but saying “his truth” or “my truth”, etc. is not an innocent linguistic trend. It’s a change of language with a specific purpose that has clearly also had a widespread effect on thought, and there’s no more dangerous thought than the idea that truth is relative.

    I've been to many rehabs....overcame a 12 year opioid addiction....went to meetings for years....met/talked to hundreds of addicts. One thing I've learned is almost every addict has trauma....myself included. We have a spiritual/mental pain inside that is so great and unbearable, that we need to get high to escape the way we feel. Childhood trauma is the root of most (not all) of these addiction problems. Another thing I learned is most addicts are brilliant people.

      I don’t say “ask them” because there’s one objective answer to whether it’s working and doing more good than bad or not, but because what you ask/propose is being done there already in these places and your answer would be found in researching them and forming your own opinion.
      MY (completely subjective) opinion is that yes, making something safer to get will lessen the deaths from having to get it via sketchy methods, however, there are, in many ways, fates worse than dying, like being absolutely dependent upon a drug until the day you die, with a government enabling you along the way out of fear of not seeming progressive enough.

    The part people forget is that rehab doesn’t get addicts clean. Addicts get themselves clean, rehab just helps provide some tools to accomplish the task. That is why forcing people into rehab doesn’t work. That is why the people who get clean while in rehab and continue abstinence afterwards are usually the same people who legitimately want to stop. They are usually the people who are tired of the lifestyle, tired of treading water and trying to survive. The success rates for rehab and aa are both comical and it’s because there isn’t 1 road to sobriety just like there isn’t 1 road into addiction. What worked for me may not work for you, and what worked for you is probably not gunna work for me. Treatment should be just as personalized as the addiction. ✌️💚🙏

I ended up homeless in 2016 after escaping domestic violence a few times. I got on Suboxone, and haven't relapsed since. I worked as a Behavioral Therapist for Autistic children for a few years, but that place ended up becoming toxic and everyone (including all 5 licenced teachers) quit, and I ended up living in the woods in Boston for the past 3 years (after a second ex-marine alcoholic roommate attacked me in 2019, like in 2016). I got on Section 8 housing a month ago, after a special list was created in 2020 for people living outside during COVID with chronic homelessness. I'm healthier and happier than I ever thought possible, and Section 8 has allowed me to finally start healing from the PTSD that caused me to use heroin in the first place.

    I know the goal is awareness. I think we need to start caring more about our children and the next generation. So many systemic issues, many different ways we can blame people, but honestly blaming doesn't solve or fix this. So many people didn't have to go this route if they had a decent chance at growing up. I fear parenting keeps getting more and more relaxed over the years, and I don't think it's a good thing. I don't have kids yet, but if I did, I would take it so seriously because at that point life is no longer about you. Maybe it's because I've been through this. I've gotten clean on my own with zero help, I've been trafficked and I've been exploited. I was adopted, I know how cruel this world can be. But I also know you create your own reality and your life. Your mind is such a powerful tool. It's all about how you use it. I don't have time for people's excuses because I know what I'm capable of and I know what others could be capable of. This is a country issue, it's not just a "fringe" issue. We need to start working on keeping those in power in check, and helping our fellow neighbors. We can't change the world until we change ourselves.

      That’s not what this channel is. This is giving voice to the parts that mostly go overlooked. What it looks like when there really is no hope of “success”. Methadone is so hard to get off of, and I use it for pain , but I'm so sick of being held down by having to go everyday. I'm scared of the withdrawal, I've tried to quit 3 times by taking shorter acting opiates bc they're easier to kick. After withdrawing 3 times, I would catch every sickness going around. Strep throat, stomach viruses, flu.. whatever. When I'd never get sick like that while on methadone. I always went back bc I couldn't take it anymore. I'm just sick of being on something. I wish you well Carrie. If you come down really slow like 5 mg every couple weeks you can do it. Amino acid supplements from gnc mixed in water helped me a ton. I was on meth 8 years

      I’m just finishing a video-someone suggested I do on here after my interview-on my little channel about exactly this. I was on methadone on and off for 17 years. And it’s a lot easier to get off if you do a few simple adjustments. Now the thing is pain. I have plates and screws and after Methadone I’ve never been able to get my pain under control. I started on gabapentin and moved up to lyrica, but no dice. It’s going to have to be something you figure out yourself: whether it’s worth it or not to quit forever.But it’s definitely worth it to find out!

      Set aside about a month where you can just lay around and kick. Google the thomas recipe. It can be done, I am proof. Not easy at all but definitely worth it
