- A story for Samhain. Part of the "Boyhood Deeds of Fionn Mac Cumhail" (Finn Mac Cool) from Irish Mythology.
This is a story that is set at the Celtic Festival of Samhain (Halloween) and would have been traditionally told at this liminal time of year, the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, when the spirits of the Otherworld may wander freely among us.
Every year, at the Feast of Samhain, one of the Tuatha Dé Danann; the Sídhe that dwell beneath the fairy mounds, visits The Hill of Tara the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. His name is Aillén mac Mícc Midhna, or Aillen the Burner, a giant fire-breathing goblin, that every year burns the palace of the high king to the ground after lulling the guards to sleep with his fairy music.
That is, of course, untill he was defeated by the young Fionn Mac Cumhaill, and in so doing reclaiming his father's usurped position as the leader of the Fianna.
