Dan Blocker was a Texas native. They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that idiom certainly applies to Blocker's larger-than-life personality. He was one of the most beloved members of the cast on Bonanza, where he played Hoss Cartwright, son of Ben Cartwright.

Blocker got his start on television in 1957, guest-starring in an episode of The Restless Gun. That small role got him the chance to audition in front of producer David Dortort. In 1958, he landed his first major recurring role in Cimarron City as the character Tiny Budinger.
It was in 1959, however, Dortort cast Dan as Hoss Cartwright in Bonanza - a role that would become his most defining work. Unfortunately, it was also his final role, because in 1972, after undergoing a relatively routine procedure removing his gall bladder, Dan developed a block clot in his lung and suddenly died.
His loss made waves across Hollywood, and it was clear that Bonanza would never be the same. For the first time in TV history, however, his death was addressed to the audience. So in many ways, he made history. Viewers got a chance to mourn his loss just as his family and friends did.
The final season of Bonanza was surreal. It was blatantly obvious that Blocker was absent. Without Hoss, it didn't even feel like the same show. That's also precisely while it's 14th season was also its final one.
Even today, that season is the least requested one for syndicated reruns. The first episode was highly viewed and historic in the way that it was the one that announced Hoss' death, but the remainder of the season almost felt compulsory. Bonanza, without Dan Blocker, wasn't really even Bonanza. - Развлечения

Hoss was my favorite character, hands down. R.I.P. Dan Blocker.
We loved him! What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, lakelizard?
@@FactsVerse Its called "the Courtship" where Hoss falls in love with a lady gambler and she breaks his great big heart.
Hoss was always my favorite. Rip Dan. Gone way too soon, but never ever forgotten ❤
It was always Hoss ! Dan Blocker played the part of a gentle giant. I will always remember him that way !
We loved Hoss! What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, Jane?
@@FactsVerse To many to pick just one. But one of the funny for me was the little green men. Know one believed hoss kept seeing them. Turned out to be a circus act that was dress in elf costume's, etc...
@@Jane_Dow You're right Jane, way too many. A few of favorites are Old Sheba, the elephant and Maestro Hoss, the one with the fiddle.
@@Jane_Dow That episode was called Hoss and the Leprechauns (Episode aired Dec 22, 1963). This episode was mentioned by Roseanne Barr on her show because it was never forgotten by kids who saw it back then. It was a kind of Christmas event, being shown in the holiday season.
@@BlackRose-vz9ww Didn't know that its original airing was in the Christmas season. Always nice to learn something new ! :~)
In 1967, I was 15 yr old, I spend half a day on the bonanza set. I can still hear Mr Blocker, and then the director. He would miss his line and start cussing ....... who can work in this damn heat... this went on for a couple of hours, I did get an 8x10 b/w signed by both of them.Dan was really nice to me called me "little buddy".
Wow! What were you doing on set, John? Thanks for sharing your story!
@@FactsVerse one of the assistant producers owned the apartment building that my aunt/uncle lived in. He happily arranged for the visiting nephew from Ga (me) to do that...
@@johnbroadwell2603 Do what?
Hoss was always my favorite. I so loved the big man with the big heart and what a solid caring man that he was, both on screen and off.
We loved him too, Mary Joy!
That’s like asking me who was my favorite family member.I loved all of them,
We know how you feel! Do you have a favorite episode of Bonanza, Sarah?
Hoss... Dan Blocker.. My most favorite character. Warm-hearted, good, true, brave, and loving. God bless him. An Indonesian fan.
We loved Hoss. What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, Tami?
@@FactsVerse Actually there are many! Most of them featuring Hoss. I would like to see those episodes again, to make sure. But Hoss was very special. I'm sure Dan Blocker is a genuine angel.
Hoss, loved him from early childhood. Still do.
@@FactsVerse
The one where Hoss fights King Kong! Lol!
Hoss (Dan Blocker) was a huge loss to "Bonanza". He will always have a special place in everyone's hearts. R.I.P forever.
When I was much younger , I imagined myself as little Joe and Hoss was the big brother that I never had but always wanted .
Same here.
Yes that show made me yearn also for a childhood that never was.
Adam was my crush, Hoss was my teddy bear and Joe was my fighter. I loved them all including Ben. Loved them on the show together, sad when Adam left. Wasn't born when the show started or ended but I watch all the reruns and can't get enough of Bonanza. RIP to all who were on the show!
Always wondered what happened to Adam
I always had a crush on Hoss, I wanted a man just like him. Hoss was it for me. I always thought that Shrek was made after Hoss, or Dan Blocker. What a fortunate family to have him in real life. Blessed.
I loved the show and never knew about the death of Dan Blocker until years later I dont think that it takes one person to make a show special , they all were great actors. I loved them all.
Isn’t that true in other areas of life also? Everyone comes together, everyone’s efforts are necessary for the greater good of whatever project is being done
Yes, true. But you have to remember Pernell Roberts as Adam Cartwright had left Bonanza in 1965. When 50 percent of the cast is gone a television show is bound to go down hill. Also I could not help but notice that the hint of lighthearted humor left the show. Hoss and the Leprechauns (Episode aired Dec 22, 1963) is arguably the most popular episode of Bonanza. The Flapjack Contest (Episode aired Jan 3, 1965) was another lighthearted episode. So with two our of four characters gone, the reduction of humor and many more changes I have no hesitation in saying Bonanza was just not the same television show anymore. Don Blocker himself said it would not pass 15 seasons.
My favorite character on Bonanza...I still watch it today
He will be missed. I loved that show.
Me too
I LOVED them all... and I STILL and will ALWAYS love Bonanza!! 💙
my favorite is Pemell Robert as Adam and Dan Blocker as Hoss
Dan Blocker was a really special man. Served in Korea
Hoss was my favourite character! He was so funny, kind and genuine. Never forgotten. His legacy lives forever in The awesome Bonanza show
One of my all time favorite shows. Hoss was my favorite character. The trouble he & Little Joe always seemed to find is etched in my memory!
I think all of the brothers made the show. Adam was the level headed, business minded brother, Hoss was the comedian and the morally correct brother who saw all people as equal and Joe was the young, wild buck of the family that brought a different point of view to the family but at the same time showing complete dedication to the family. It would be hard to choose a favorite. Hoss once said in an interview that he didnt forsee Bonanza lasting more than 15 years (this was during their 13th season). He died right before they were about to make their 14th season. They are all gone now, including Ben, so may they all rest in peace.
I always enjoyed Little Joe and Hoss. I enjoyed their camaraderie. RIP to all the stars of the show.
Hoss always, like a sweet teddy bear. Hoss's mother's story was so touching when Paw/Lorne Greene recalled his 2nd wife. When Hoss laughed his whole body shook with his laughter. Nobody could take Dan Blocker's place in my heart, so I quit watching the series that had been my favorite TV show.
Kinda strange that Michael Landon/Little Joe & Pernell Roberts/Adam both died of pancreatic cancer.
GOD BLESS them, rest well in the hereafter Cartwright family.
I was born in late 72’. I loved seeing him on the show. I, to this day have been inspired by his character in the character. So glad this was his role. KINDNESS goes a very very long way. Thank you 😊
The most lovable character in all Western film or TV history...a big guy with a big heart, you can feel it was the real man in any episode
Thank you for your kind words to Dan Blocker. He will definitely be missed.
My father watched Bonanza every Sunday night and, of course, everyone else in the family did as well. My favorite episode of all time was Little Jo and Hoss meet the leprechauns. It was wonderful!
That was a good episode! Who was your father's favorite character from the show, Nancy?
@@FactsVerse Poppa Ben of course! My Mom liked Adam and my big brother liked Little Joe best. Now the horses! I liked Ben's buckskin, my brother liked Little Joe's pinto and my Dad liked Hoss's bigger horse. Mom stuck with Adam's horse -- in hind sight, I think that's why Dad didn't think too well of Adam...LOL! It was a great show and this was a great video! Thank you for making it.
@@nancymalcom6190 Joe playing that prank on Hoss and then collapsing into uncontrollable laughter on the ground. "I'll have your ornery hide, Little Joe!!" My favourite bit was when Hoss said: "He won't come down. Let's shake the branch." "No, don't do that, you'll kill him! Ain't he cute, tee-hee-hee!!"
Hoss was my favorite
My husband and I watched Bonanza often. We loved the show. They where such a nice family with lots of love to give.
I never had a favorite, loved all of them. Together the made what Bonanza was all about. RIP Dan, and little Joe.
I love all of them, and am very sad over hoss (Dan blocker),and I wish the cook had been more in the forefront. Still watch bonanza everyday on metv
We love all of them too! What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, Marina?
@@FactsVerse I don't know the episode # but just watched it Wednesday where hoss and little Joe were in the circus and instead of the $400.00 payment, they brought home an elephant 🐘 ☺ and Ben cartwright had to deal with it! It was so funny!
Oh, my gosh! My mother gave me her old ceramic 'china man' water sprinkler for ironing for my hope chest. I IMMEDIATLY dubbed him Hop Sing! He was wonderful!
The cook's name was Hop Sing.

What do you have to loose to believe in the higher power. Do you believe that we all evolved from monkeys? Someone set everything in motion. The universe didn't come to be by a big bang. It was created by our God. You would be a better human being believing in God. If we where all wrong, then you still have nothing to loose. But if we are right, then you lost. May God bless you and wake you up from your unbelieve.
I will always love Dan blocker ( Hoss )
My parents loved watching that show.
He was large is appearance, and as gentle as a lamb when the script called for it.He sometimes seemed slow, but proved he was allot smarter than thought. His heart always seemed bigger than the entire ranch. They always had him helping someone, and I looked forward to the episodes where he was the main character.I still enjoy the show, and am glad they were created. The characters of the series brought the west to us all.
We loved him! Such a gentle giant. What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, BryDuhBikeGuy?
I. Wish. That. I. Could. Have. ..Hug. Him. He. Was. Like. Teddy. Bear.
I remember an episode where Hoss played the Easter Bunny for a orphans.
Oh yeah
Yep. And Santa Claus for the orphans one episode. Wayne Newton was in that episode.
Bonanza was my favourite TV Western!! And while I loved all the Cartwrights (Hoss was Boss!!). 😘😎👍
I never had a "favourite" character from 'Bonanza.'
To me, they were like the four 'aces' in a pack of cards.
Each one of them being at the top of the 'pack.'
Being in the UK, we used to sit and watch 'Bonanza' on a Sunday evening, (Started in 1960) daring not to miss any of the episodes.
To this day, in 2022, I still like to watch 'Bonanza', now on RUclips.
Brilliant, five star programme, with top of the 'pack' characters and actors.
Regrettably, no longer amongst us, but their memories WILL be there forever.
Adam Cartwright was my favorite, the way he acted was how the oldest sibling acted and viewed their siblings
💘 bonanza it still come on i. LOve all the. Cartwrights. Rip Cartwrights 😇😇😇😇🌹🌹🌹🌹💋💋🍵🍷🍗🍞
Hoss was my favourite from the first time I saw him. Big, strong and so very gentle.
Oh and Love the videos keep up the great work as well
Being 63 now, I remember hearing that Dan really died drowning. I never knew till today that it was a surgery complication. As a kid and fan of Bonanza, and living not far from the location, I think bonanza shaped a lot of good principles in life for us cap shooters. Oh and there was that great Paladin!!!
Actually my favorite character of the Cartwrights was Hoss, I just couldn't get enough of Hoss. Thanks for sharing...
Hoss was my favorite also he played some serious scenes especially with the children also his love interest he had a big heart
Thank u for posting and going back to my younger years,I watched this show every week!! Loved it!!!! My favorite was "Little Joe"
I never missed this show!! Being a girl in love with horses, this definitely was a favorite of mine. The Cartwright family was full of interesting characters, but my favorites were definitely Little Joe and Hoss!!
@@teresapepper-marble1789 When I was little, I used to dream of having a horse like Little Joe's !
They were all my favorites. I watch it still today. I grew up with it. If we could make time stand still. They were like family to me👍😘
Mr Dan Blocker… Is my Favorite Cartwright… rip Sir & thanks for the great Memories … in 2022 Im still watching…🙏🏾❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️
Loved Hoss but Adam was my favorite. Pernell Roberts was outstanding in the role. I think the producers would’ve done better to compromise with Roberts on some of the issues he had with the show. There were too many inconsistencies and they wouldn’t allow the sons to mature over many years. Great show still. I’ve enjoyed bingeing it recently.
Pernell was a weirdo. Every actress that worked with him have said so. I didn't like him. Never smiled. Always serious.
I loved Hoss very much, he had a sweet spirit, especially when children were involved. But Little Joe was mm favorite. I still watch them on Me Tv. I'm glad it still showing.thank you.
Best Western series in the whole of the 20th century.
RIP big guy. It won't be long, - and we'll all see each other again.
It's hard to choose between Hoss and Little Joe because of the way they interacted all the time
I love the bonanza show
Hoss and Little Joe always had a special camaraderie. Adam was always a prickly character. The character of Hoss was central to the family; he was the heart of the Cartwrights in every respect. It certainly couldn’t go on without him.
I just watched this episode and when they mention Hoss in passing I'm like what?! I'm so glad I could come here and see what really happened. Thanks guys for doing a fine job in explaining what happened.
Thanks for watching, dieyoung!
Dan blocker and Michael Landon are my favorite
For Bonanza , Dan was the man !
Hoss made me laugh all the time. I loved him and always will in my heart ❤. Rest in peace.
Little Joe was my fave Character. When I was a little girl my mom would take me to the Ponderosa. It's sad it closed down years ago.
I still watch it now all of them were my favorite
So good! What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, 808?
@@FactsVerse wow it's so many I don't know which one was my best. I like the one when hoss lost his memory and I like the one about the the white medicine woman that were the Indians thought she had magic powers or something like that do you remember that one?
It was so sad, but I still watched the show until it went off the air. Now I watch the old re-runs. Hoss was always my favorite
I so Bonanza many many times. I loved all, and I cried for Dan Blocker. To this day I think how sad this is. He was so young. Year 2023, I am seeing and love Bonanza. I feel I lived in Wild West in my earlier life. Hello from Norway.
Wow I really liked him the good old gentle guy who brings home strays I love the way he acts
I loved them all. Got to see Miss and Ben at the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo many, many years ago. I still watch the series to date.
You're a true fan! We're happy to know that you had a chance to meet Miss and Ben. What is your most memorable Bonanza episode?
Hoss, hasn’t gone for me because when ever I want to see him he is always on RUclips. Rest In Peace my giant of a friend 😘
I still enjoy watching bonanza in 2021 thanks to me tv.
My favorite cartright was Adam, serious and sensible.
Bonanza was a classic. I too watched the series. Many years ago I was in Norfolk, Va for some reason and by chance I saw Dan Blocker from a distance as he exited the Golden Triangle Hotel where he was staying. Wow what a big man. He seemed to stand head and shoulders above the people around him. It was a treat to see him in person especially since this was not planned. My grandparents last name was also Cartwright. My grandad had a sense of humor too. He wanted me to make them a sign to put in their yard that read ¨Cartwright´s Ponderosa¨ I did and it stayed there til my grandad died and my grandma moved. I have a photo of that sign with our young daughter standing beside it in an album here. She was about 2 years old at the time. There is a lot of love and memories in that photo for our daughter and the tv show as I´m reminded after watching this video about Bonanza and Dan Blocker.
My father is laid to rest in the same cemetery!
I LOVED Hoss (Dan). Such a gentle giant.
On May 13 1972 I was sitting in the second deck on left field side just past 3rd base at Busch Stadium in St Louis MO. I do not remember who the Cardinals were playing, nor who won. Someone with a radio said to no one in particular, "Dan Blocker died".
I discovered this show this year and I freaking love it I watch bits and pieces of random episodes on RUclips when it pops up but now I'm going to watch on Amazon prime from first episode till end once I get Baywatch licked
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
The narrator said that the gall bladder surgery that was performed on Dan Blocker was a common procedure. It may have been, but the surgeries of today which uses very small incisions (normally 3-4 depending on the situation) and this arthroscopic procedures are a picnic in the park compared to the very major procedure that Blocker had. My father had his gall bladder removed in 1970, and although I was a typical teenager, I remember very well how sick my dad was and the scar on his right side extended from just below his waist to his rib cage. It was a horrible scar, and the recovery period was long and hard.
Dan Blocker had a very serious illness and the surgery was worlds apart from today’s. Pulmonary thrombosis were common and I know from personal experience how quickly one can hit. I’ll always miss the gentle giant of Hoss Cartwright and Bonanza died on that May Day that he died.
Dan Blocker had a beautiful soul. No wonder he couldn't be replaced.
A fantastic show, one of the best 😪💖
It was! What's your favorite episode of Bonanza, Leona?
Omgoodness I would be hard pressed to try and pick just one! I loved ♥ every show!!

Hoss was my favorite Bonanza character , even before I learned he was a fellow Texan .
To me Bonanza was never the same when Pernell Roberts character Adam Cartwright left after the 1964-1965 season. Frank Giampaolo.
I would pretend to be little joe and my sister was Hoss our bolt
I met Lorn Green @ the Virginia State Fair in Richmond Virginia. Lorn seemed to be a Helluva nice Man. It was in the 70s , I was 8-10 years old. My fave was Hoss. Something about a big man with a good heart I love.
He was an excellent actor.Sorocaba SP.Brazil.

Loved this. I finally treated myself to ALL Bonanza episodes for the writing of my book, "A Cartwright Ride Through Virginia City History," and though I cannot come up with a date for connection to Virginia City to this one, and know that Dortort wanted the chance for a true final episode, I like how this makes the final feel nicely done.
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
@@FactsVerse Sorry, I meant to post this on the "The Hunter" episode, but somehow I got here.
Hoss was my favorite! He was funny and was the muscle and brawn, Ben and Adam was the brains and Little Joe was the playboy and gunfighter.

I could not pick one. All of them were very important. Since Adan left you could feel the difference. And without Hoss, forget it. But I have to say that Candy was a good character.

There were many great Westerns of that day but Bonanza was my favorite. Who would have thought that 2 of the key actors would die prematurely! I remember how much I loved Bonanza and hearing of the death of Dan Blocker was such a shock. Then years later Michael Landon died of pancreatic cancer. Rest in peace both Dan and Michael. You gave us so much happiness, entertainment, and moral lessons in life too.

I loved them all. I still watch Banaza weekly.
Eric ‘Hoss’ Cartwright was and still is my favorite Bonanza character. RIP Dan Blocker 😭😭
For me, my favorites were Hoss and Joe. I also enjoyed their appearances on another favorite western of mine, "The Rifleman". They did exceptionally well in the episodes they were casted. Blocker appeared in 1 episode and Landon appeared in 2.
Hose was my favorite!!
