    Before you ask: Saturn is showing some definite improvement over time. Skin is doing a lot better, healing is happening, mouth looks better and no sign of an RI. Her wobble remains the same, she's lost one layer of one eyecap so far. Good baby steps. I'll have an update out soon!

    Hey! I honestly love what you're doing with the soft furs, however I have one critique for you. Glass enclosures are definitely not suited for any rat or mouse long term. Reason being is that it builds up ammonia and the dust particles from the substrate is confined and can cause URIs and other stuff you don't want to expose your reptiles to. For that amount of rats, I'd reccomend a single-level critter nation or something similar in that sense. Although it's not reccomended for rats, a simple kaytee enclosure would also be better than a glass enclosure. Good luck!

    • @TuberoseKisser
      @TuberoseKisser 5 лет назад +2

      I agree with the ammonia part, roaches are a good example, even though my roach tank doesn't have a lid everytime I switch out their box I just get a blast of ammonia.

      I'm aware, I've had plenty of rodents in the past. It's not meant as a long term solution (as it won't even fit them when they start producing) so I'll be in the market for something bigger and better ventilated. In the meantime I am trying to make the most of the space and ensure they get the airflow they need. I do know how to prevent stagnant conditions from forming (was considering one of those computer fans for that purpose) and will be changing the substrate frequently while they're in the tank. I had a huge three-story rat cage a while back and foolishly sold it, but I'll find something better for them soon

      AfroHerpkeeper A ExoTerra might work out quite nice for them.
      Made of glass (so definitely chew-proof), well ventilated and it allows you to take them from the side instead of from above, which might reduce stress for them.

    The best cage for multimammates is something like a parrot cage, if the bars are too wide you just mesh the sides so they can't escape. I do it for my degus too.

    Heyo! Rats do need ventilation on all sides. Their pee is FULL of ammonia, which builds up in tanks. Even with the fans, the ventilation wont be enough. If they were mice, itd be different. Aspen shavings arent recommended, but are fine if klin dried. Your rats will be prone to URI's and other respiratory problems if kept in the tank.

    Hiya Daniel,
    Great set of items! Thanks for sharing them all!
    One thing to be aware of with those water bottles is that if it's really hot, the little ball expands and can stick inside the pipe and stop working. I had rabbits die because of it before I worked out WTF was going on...
    I thought that, even if you know about this, it might be worth mentioning when you do a setup video for your rats so your viewers are aware, too.

      What bit him? Depending on the extent of the bite the tip of the tail could either heal or rot and fall off. As someone who breeds rodents- species of mice, African soft fur rats, and hamsters are completely fine in aquariums, but rats are not. Due to their horrible lungs and lack of enough ventilation for them it causes respiratory infections. (:

    • @user-xy3uo4sg2s
      @user-xy3uo4sg2s 5 лет назад

      Also the asfr are more closely related to mice more than rats which is why they can be kept in tanks. The minimum requirement if I remember right is 10 gallons for 1, and an additional 5 for each additional one you have. Hope that helps! Such cuties you have.

    • @bratatouille
      @bratatouille 5 лет назад

      You can't really compare them like that the genus they belong to (mastomys) is closely related to the praomys genus. They are slightly more closely related to Mus than Rattus, but that doesn't mean much.
      Overall mice are often kept in tanks just because it's easier, since they can't escape as easily. Ammonia sinks to the bottom, meaning that a screen lid doesn't do much to the smell.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  5 лет назад +1

      We shall see, I've mentioned this in a couple other comments and in the vid. I'll probably settle on a bin setup if I can somehow find one with chew-proof sides. For now they have a big wheel, two hides, and the stuff I unboxed here, so they're definitely able to get some climbing in regardless. I think one of those computer fans would properly circulate the air even in an aquarium. Nothing's set in stone yet and I always change my practices for the betterment of my animals, so don't worry

      @@AfroHerpkeeper That's awesome to hear. Sorry I am a tad touchy on it. I just had one of my rats pass last night. She was a blue and white rex and had bad seizures. I had her in an aquarium when I first got her and the others. They all started sneezing and so I moved them to a cage and started feeding them garlic and pomegranate juice. They all got better in just a few days. I would suggest that too if you hear excess sneezing and raspy breathing. They may not like the garlic but they may like it mixed with pomegranate and apple juice. For girls I did a spoonful for all three. I eventually moved them into a bigger cage with no plastic because they chewed through and started to escape.
      But yeah, I will definitely stick around. I would like to see an update on the ball python you got that was nibbled by rats. Keep up the awesome stuff and I hope she gets better.

      Gassing would definitely be slower and more distressing. A snake has evolved to dispatch its prey quickly and efficiently, and I see little issue in letting the snake do that... I will probably be learning to do it myself though.
