I travel ro Uruguay and other places in South Anerica at least once a year for business. What you are drinking is Mate. It is not unique to Uruguay. Mate Yerba is also widely available in Argentina and in Paraguay. Mate Yerba is similar to green tea in taste with a higher level of caffeine. There are at least three Starbucks in the small city of Montevideo (including the one at the airport) because younger Uruguayans tend to prefer coffee over Mate. Unfortunately, Uruguayan food is quite bland. Other than Asada and your basic carbs such as pizza and pasta, there are not that many other options. The general consensus is that Brazil and Argentina have better food choices and options. The cost of living in Montevideo is among the highest in the world. For example, expect to fork over $100 USD (before taxes) for a pair of Levis. In touist areas such as Punta del Este, things are even pricier. Whenever you order a drink or a plate of food, your order would come with a hefty tax or governmental surcharge. Did you not even notice this? The streets of Montevideo are not safe at all - especiaaly after dusk, just ask anyone who actually lives in Uruguay. The general consensus too is that Argentina and Brazil have better looking women. I can personally vouch that Brazilian women are even friendlier and are even better looking. Uruguay is a usually a stopover and NOT a final destination for most travelers. Before jumping to the conclusion that Uruguay is the absolute best, do visit other places such as Rio, Santiago or even Buenos Airles in that part of the world.

I travel ro Uruguay and other places in South Anerica at least once a year for business. What you are drinking is Mate. It is not unique to Uruguay. Mate Yerba is also widely available in Argentina and in Paraguay. Mate Yerba is similar to green tea in taste with a higher level of caffeine. There are at least three Starbucks in the small city of Montevideo (including the one at the airport) because younger Uruguayans tend to prefer coffee over Mate. Unfortunately, Uruguayan food is quite bland. Other than Asada and your basic carbs such as pizza and pasta, there are not that many other options. The general consensus is that Brazil and Argentina have better food choices and options.
The cost of living in Montevideo is among the highest in the world. For example, expect to fork over $100 USD (before taxes) for a pair of Levis. In touist areas such as Punta del Este, things are even pricier. Whenever you order a drink or a plate of food, your order would come with a hefty tax or governmental surcharge. Did you not even notice this? The streets of Montevideo are not safe at all - especiaaly after dusk, just ask anyone who actually lives in Uruguay.
The general consensus too is that Argentina and Brazil have better looking women. I can personally vouch that Brazilian women are even friendlier and are even better looking. Uruguay is a usually a stopover and NOT a final destination for most travelers. Before jumping to the conclusion that Uruguay is the absolute best, do visit other places such as Rio, Santiago or even Buenos Airles in that part of the world.
