The shojo anime with sparkles and an unconvincing crossdressing guard- still more historically authentic than most historical shows!
It’s probably because Riyoko Ikeda’s source material and inspiration for her manga was Stefan Zweig’s « Marie-Antoinette » biography, that’s why the anime is so impressive considering the fact that it was made decades ago without the Internet, and in a country so far away from France !

"Unconvincing crossdressing guard" Well to be fair, Oscar isn't trying to y'know, fool anyone into thinking she's a man. They all know and she doesn't hide it. She just prefers to be thought of as masculine.
i love the violins progression when the singer songs "they bloom in dignity."
I'm just so glad my mom was a huge anime fan in the 80's(as were all Iraqi kids back then) and she made me watch this show growing up. Now this masterpiece is one of my favorite anime even though I'm a gen z member.
Same! My aunt and my mom showed me what they called Lady Oscar which was this! And I grew up obsessed with it, I even have a tattoo of it and they love it sm
I'm so glad people are still discovering this anime. I'm older than you but younger than most people that watched it and it was so frustrating that I couldn't convince anyone else to give it a chance because it was so old!

@@mirsolis4992 well, I'm an older gen z and was able to catch this airing on TV in the 2000's. When I was a kid, I did not mind if the animation was old. The animation is still beautiful even if its old. The story is beautiful. It's poetic, mature, serious, dark and realistic

This anime has become very very popular in Italy, almost everyone knows it!
In Italy we have two opening songs for this anime. They are completely different from the Japanese one and, although both of them are nice (the second one is particularly beautiful!), they lack the melancholy of the original version.

I doubt it did.....it took some serious liberties with that era and everything associated with it
It didn't take that many liberties, though.
Most things in it are historically accurate.
For example, the Diamond Collar Scandal was almost faithfully done to the real event. Even Madame Valois' back-story was almost identical to the real thing.

As a singer, I really appreciate the female vocalist's voice in this song. I'm drawn to singer's voices that have a certain timbre/tone to them.
I can tell she is experienced. Her vibrato sounds so pretty and natural throughout.
So... actual legit anime company Manga Entertainment put the Rose of Versailles opening on their channel... and yet judging by the credits it seems to be clipped out of a fansub video? Seems a bit dodgy that a proper licensor would have to grab footage from a fan-translated pirate version imo.

I like how everyone's so accepting of Oscar's manly role. A noble woman from the 18th century with the skills to match any man. Funny how Joan of Arc tried that early and it got her killed. 😕

I think there was a bit of a time gap... especially considering that in the late 1600's and early 1700's, a french operatic singer, expert duelist, and woman seductress was able to get away with a lot, even including personal pardons from the king himself at times. It could be possible that the French became more accepting of powerful women in manly roles. ^^

The moment i heard this opening i went and read the whole manga in a day , it was incredible
Watched episode 1 the other day after so many years of trying to find this show... Ended up crying several times before the end credits even began man. Hit me really deep. I remember being around a relative who watched this when I was around 5 or so and it really stuck with me, can't even remember much of it just being really sad for Oscar and Andre without really understanding why... Until now.

To the higher powers: Maybe SOMEONE with a way to distribute it, could release it physically or something, especially since it's the anniversary. Maybe they could even release it with the new film that's coming out and make the waiting worth it *wink wink nudge nudge* it would be great, and even if that someone had been absorbed they still might be able to do it, I know it'd make people happy.

Rose of Versailles got me into history, I love how historically accurate the show is compared to the reality of what happened in the events of French history, I’m planning to take a college course on history along with literature in the future ❤

Im 39 atm. This anime were broadcasted when i was around 8/9yo. And yes if you have seen many animes or read you will notice the drawing style and coloring is an old school one on par with Saint Saiya. So yeah im quite old but still young on my mind. LOL
I even still remember the reff lyrics dubbed on my languange ❤️❤️

@@digihunter6602 Dropou em que parte amigo? A primeira metade foca muito na Antonieta e mesmo q seja intencionalmente mas é bem frustrante, mas vale a pena e depois foca mais na Oscar e Andre, recomendo re-assistir, esse vale a pena.

Saw some episodes of this on retro crush. It’s a pretty fun political thriller. I liked the opening too. I can see how this influenced berserk. It’s neat seeing a piece of media more favorable to Marie Antoinette.
It would be great if NYAV Post dubbed this like they did with Berserk.
