      We have the same problem don't feel bad . You don't have to use barb wire heavy smooth wire will work fine if you don't have a deer problem like we do and it's a lot cheaper ! That two stand fence is the lowest cost way you can go ! It works good and it's easy to maintain just be sure it's good and hot

    You’re right, don’t make a complete loop. Electric will take the path of least resistance. So it won’t shock you if you have a continuous loop. You’re absolutely right about electric barbed wire. You have 2 lines of defense. Awesome info.👍🏻

      People that have moved in around here now aren't farmer friendly at all! used to if you cows got out the neighbors helped you get them now they call the cops and act like fools . So I had to come up with something escape proof

    • @armymobilityofficer9099
      @armymobilityofficer9099 3 года назад

      A commonly asked question is, “Does an electric fence have to make a complete loop?”
      The answer is no, an electric fence DOES NOT have to make a complete loop. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to completing the fence loop.
      Creating a continuous loop will increase voltage on the fence line, because power is pushed in both directions. Essentially, with a continuous loop, voltage only has to travel half the distance.
      Even though more voltage is better, creating a continuous loop causes difficulty when fault finding a fence line. Due to the voltage traveling in two directions, a digital fault finder cannot distinguish right from left to signify where the amperage drop is located.
      In conclusion, only create a complete loop if it is a necessity and if you are trying to increase voltage on the fence line.

    Thanks for this one Chris. My goal is to put two beef cows in a 1/2 to 1 acre area on hay. I'm unsure if I would be mixing steers and heifers or what breeds are available in my area. I'm starting to lay out the fence lines on paper. I like the idea of using barbed wire. I have deer in the area but I don't know how they would cause problems?
    Am I understanding that you have a telephone pole every 60 feet and between them are two t posts 20 feet apart?

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Год назад +1

      The more of a deer problem the closer you have to put the post . Some of mines a pole every thirty and metal post every ten some is sixty and fifteen

      @@jimknowlton342 they run through fences constantly, that's one of the reasons we went to barbwire and the 3 foot hight easier to jump and doesn't stretch or break easily the other was cost. And no I've never seen a cow or deer get tangled in it I did have a horse get hung up because he slid under one and stuck a leg through but I cut him out without serious injury. Keeping it flagged helps a lot with the deer

    How you use PVC pipe as my poles I don't have to buy insulators that way I take a pipe and drive in the ground and then I can put the PVC pipe in and it's small enough that if a horse or cow gets up against it it leans with them and springs back up before it will break my fence which will tea the electric fence on them longer and I get more shock out of it if you do this be sure and drill a hole at ground level and plug the top of the PVC pipe to keep water out of it just my idea what is 24 mama pigs on 10 acres for Year's and I've done the same thing to keep horses and cows and I have goats in right now

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  4 года назад

      We use pvc pipe the same way for predator fence but unfortunately it won't take a deer running through it , just pulls put and wraps around its self and makes a tangled up mess . Our electricity goes out to often to rely on electric fences as the only thing keeping something in

  • @mikemitchell9157
    @mikemitchell9157 Год назад

    My doe goat I tried setting up a small electric fence when I first got her. She went up sniffed it and blew right through the fence as soon as it hit her snapped a few insulators and everything. Train the goats when they are young. Don't expect to train an older pregnant doe when she's never done electric fences

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Год назад +1

      An issue with goats is grounding that and they're just naturally hard to confine . Alternating hot and ground wires on the fence can make a big difference. I raised meat goats commercially for twenty years the best thing is use field fencing with a hot wire on the inside it'll keep them in and the neighbors dogs out

Probably about 600 feet any suggestions

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Год назад

      A good solar charger and one strand of 14 ga wire would be the cheapest. A wood post every 40 foot and fiberglass every 10 to 15 and flag it good . They make gate handles where you just unhook the wire . I don't know how well that will work if you get deep snow it will short out the fence

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay

      I don't think that's true , at least not in the U.S anyway . Several people have said it but none can back it up with an ordnance .
