  • We had the opportunity to witness the mighty superyacht Maltese Falcon sailing out the coast of Sardinia on winds over 30knts. The video is not edited in any way; shoot handheld with a stabilizer. We can appreciate how an 87m (285 foot) sailing yacht can sail in these conditions without any kind of problems. If you are interested in the rig of this yacht, called Falcon Rig commercially (DynaRig the technical name), we did an in-depth review in NAVIS Magazine, which can be found on edition #55 or you can read the web version here: www.navisyacht...
    Only two yachts are using the DynaRig in the world, once the Maltese Falcon built by Perini Navi, and the other is Black Pearl built by Oceanco.

      Hahaha, you can't believe how the helm station of this yacht is. Imagine that the masts are all carbon fiber built by Magma Structures in the UK. In between the carbon, you have fiberoptic receptors every two or three meters, which report the pressure happening in each of the three masts to the helm station; the captain knows in real time what is happening in each area of each mast in real time. Then, the captain can select one or more masts and, with a futuristic small wheel, can turn the mast through a masterpiece of engineering created by Fabio Perini located at the foot of the mast. It is an unbelievable yacht to sail.

      I was there; we were a few miles out of Sardinia and quite windy. I was shooting from a large RIVA but didn't have a way to measure the wind correctly. Now, the yacht is 88 meters long, and this wind was just a breeze for her.

    • @mattlechner8442
      @mattlechner8442 7 месяцев назад +1

      I believe you that it was windy. Usually once you get to 17-18 kts. wind, you start to see noticeable whitecaps on the water. At 25 kts. in most cases there are plenty of whitecaps. 30 kts. isn't a gale or anything, but it's a pretty significant breeze and you would really see plenty of whitecaps. That said, it's definitely a nice tape.'

      Hello visitors, thank you for taking a look at our videos. The Maltese Falcon was built by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi in their shipyard located in Turkey, just to clarify any discrepancies. So both of you are right. The yacht was built for an American owner and launched in 2005, then sold to a greek owner. It was the first time the DynaRig was built, designed by Gerard Dykstra from the Netherlands, based on an old German design from the sixties that was never built. The masts are all carbon fiber with fiber optics sensors placed between the carbon fiber to measure the loads of the mast. All this was built by the English master engineer Damon Roberts in his company Magma Structures. The incredible mast rotation system is a genius piece of engineering from Mr. Perini himself in Italy. The yacht was so revolutionary and advanced to its time that it took nearly ten years for another yacht to appear featuring this rig; this is S/Y Black Pearl but by Oceanco, but Perini Navi and Magma built its rig. So it is an international project, all thanks to the forward-thinking mind of the American Owner. Today there are several yachts featuring this rig under construction. I had the chance to sail the yacht several times and also in race conditions, and she is simply fantastic. If you want more info, we publish a whole story about the Maltese Falcon in NAVIS Magazine October 2012 edition ( www.navisyachts.com/201212061128/navis-october-/-november-2012/perini-navi-presents-the-incredible-88-maltese-falcon.html ). Or if you want to know everything about the DynaRig, we published an excellent editorial about it in the August 2020 edition of NAVIS Magazine ( www.navisyachts.com/202009091088/navis-august-/-september-2020/the-future-of-sailing-superyachts-falcon-rig.html ). I guess that furling the top sails would allow them to brace on a bit harder on the bottom ones and they might go faster. This trim was probably maximising Instagram worthiness rather than speed.

      We can certify she can sail over 20kts as we have been on board during a race in Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. She was flying. Check the image in the following article; I took it while competing onboard superyacht Silencio in another regatta. Water was coming in from the board of the Maltese Falcon as in any small sailboat. At that moment, we were doing 16kts with Silencio. www.navisyachts.com/20181113364/navis-october-/-november-2018/perini-navi-cup-2018.html - Sadly, I can not share the images from onboard the Maltese Falcon as it is not permitted.

      The answer from the Navis magazine is authoritative. In even simpler terms the sails on the Maltese Falcon are actually wings, computer controlled and trimmed. There was a slight issue with the edges of the cloth flapping but I am sure they can resolve that problem.

      Check for superyacht Black Pearl. The rig is fantastic, this is one of the yachts with most sailing time in comparison with traditional rights which are complex and difficult to manage. Usually, this yacht sails five minutes after leaving the dock, something impossible with a super sailing yacht standard rig. There is one specific reason why not many yachts use this rig: its price.

    • @NAVISmagazine
      @NAVISmagazine  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@HansSchulzBalzers@HansSchulzBalzers OK, let's change it to strong wind; this might be a little more accurate. What happens with these types of super sailing yachts is that their size makes everything look smaller and softer. The waves that day were huge, I was on a big Riva, and if I didn't have the camera stabilizer, it would be impossible to shoot this scene. And believe me, the wind was strong. The yacht might be sailing in this scene at over 16 knots, but you can't even feel it in the shot; this is 88 meters, one full street block sailing at full sail downwind.
