Church of India was colonized by the Roman (Latin) Catholic church and brought under the Roman/Latin Pope with the support of the Portughese in the 15th century. Part of the Malankara Church threw away this Roman/Latin yoke and came into communion with the west Syriac Orthodox Church around 1653; the other part continued to be under the Roman/Lain yoke till they gained limited autonomy as a sui juris church in 1992. However even today their ethos is primarily Latin (rosary, statues, curifixes, sacred heart, 40 hour adorations, revelations of fatima, lourde etc) especially in their Major-Archdiocese of Ernakulam/Angamaly. It is true that immediately prior to Roman colonization, the liturgical traditions in Malankara was East Syriac. There is no doubt about that. We are not sure about the liturgical practices in the first 1000 years of Christianity in India. There is some indication that there could have been a west Syriac presence in the AD 600s . The Archives of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria has documented proof about an Indian priest, unable to go to the Patriarch of Antioch (by that time Muslim conquest had already occurred) ; alternatively approaching the Coptic Patriarch for episcopal ordination. The Patriarch of Alexandria ordained him as Bishop for India in AD 695. The Coptic Orthodox Church was in communion only with the West Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and was not in communion with the East Syriac Assyrian Church of the East.
