    When I first got my Volvo I had to go to a place a long way away and due to the position of Birmingham I had to leave dead early and subsequently had plenty of time to complete the second half of my journey. I decided to amuse myself during this time by seeing how many mpgs I could get on the car’s computer. I managed an average of 61.3 mpgs for the whole trip which I was pretty pleased with as I wasn’t hanging around on my way to Birmingham and I sat in quite a bit of traffic around Birmingham before I started making an effort to up my mpg performance. The computer presents me with a nice little column chart showing my mpgs for each mile of my journey and for 5 of the last 6 miles I managed over 85 mpgs. Good int it? And what’s even more impressive is I don’t have the most economical version, there’s one that will do even more. I can’t believe you let Steve Berry go wandering around Chorley unchaperoned. I guess all the 90s Top Gear groupies were at the bingo.

    I think you are very calm. I would have been frustrated and fed up with such a fail after driving hours through such awful conditions.

    You're not alone in your rant!
    New cars have Automatic Lights, because they have digital dashboards lit all the time, which is great when its getting dark, but they don't come on in bad weather if there is enough light and people are so thick that they don't know this.
    I told someone this and she looked horrified because she realised she'd been driving without lights on in fog.
    And then there is Mr or Ms Stupid, can't cure that!
    Auto wipers are generally unsatisfactory
    One of your best videos, the best ever video about not being able to make a video!

    Seeing Steve get in the car was like someone loading an ironing board, you need a perspex partition like bus drivers have.

    The poor mpg could be due to a few things, I'd push the injectors being at fault further down the line.
    Is the mass airflow sensor plugged in? If so, try unplugging it. You may notice a pick up in acceleration and a reduction in black smoke and improvement in mpg. Seeing how the egr was gunked up, I imagine the little filament pickup bit inside the maf will have an oil film coating on it most likely.. wouldn't bother wasting time cleaning it, unplug it, if you want to replace it then td4 Freelander maf is also the same
    Is there any black oily residue around the passenger headlight area around the intercooler (if so intercooler o ring needs replacing). Bumper doesn't need to come off either, just an 8mm bolt to remove and a jubilee for the intercooler hose and remove the plastic pipe to the intercooler.
    May also need the intake manifold taking off, filling with oven cleaner and leaving for a few hours and washing out as these get gunked up too! (*! Remove map sensor first!*)
    With the above, checked and unplugged maf, try some BP ultimate (highest cetane rated diesel available at the pumps) and get it hot, stick it at 3.5k rpm and get the cat hot and injector tips etc hot) hold it at this rpm for just a few minutes, into next highest gear and floor it from 2k to 3k rpm and then slow down, back into lower gear and back to 3.5k rpm and cycle this a few times to clear the cat etc. a bottle of cataclean or even redEx diesel system cleaner wont do any harm
    As for the wipers stopping when you stop, this is an option that can be turned on and off in the bcu with toaf or T4.

      Thank you, Rob - that's brilliant!
      I will try all of this next week. I believe with the lumpy idle, it's probably the injectors, but the inlet will definitely be gunky, too.

    • @aclassofitsown75
      @aclassofitsown75 Месяц назад +4

      @ProjectNigel not a problem 🙂 happy offer advice and hopefully checking these areas will sort your issues. The lumpy idle and smoking tends to point more to the maf being out of spec. They can run with the maf unplugged without issue as many people do this. Not to rule out injectors but could be some of the simpler, quicker and cheaper and easier little things and hopefully it is 😁

    As Steve got into the car he was expecting a kiss, the longer you left him waiting - the closer he placed his head towards your lips. It’s a TopGear thing.

    Rover 75 windscreen wipers stop when the car stops because of motion/speed sensors - the ABS ring at the off side front wheel - not rain sensors - because when you are stopped the rain doesn't stop!

    reduced visibility i.e spray is an correct application of a rear foglight!

    • @ProjectNigel
      @ProjectNigel  Месяц назад +3

      Reduced visibility? Yes, of course, but it's the stuff going on behind that's the problem. There is no need for rear fogs in a situation like this, and it can only contribute blurring of the objects that are less visible

      The Highway code states that visibility should be 100 metres or less before the use of fog lights,something people know little about.
