This is actually the reason Sun and Moon will probably remain my favorite of the Ash era series, it was able to fully lean into the character based comedy aspects that make most good episodic/slice of life shows work while still managing to pull off the emotional beats really well

Thats actually a big reason i liked xyz so much you actually saw the journey as they went from town to town or a show like scooby doo mystery inc where each episode is unique but they all tie in to a larger plot
Dude xyz was one of the best. Ash and his group definitely had lots of development throughout the show. Also let’s not forget SERENA the best poki girl in my opinion! And greninja was TOP TIER I was so hyped for the next pokimon show after xyz hoping there would actually be a big turn in the Pokémon series. But to my disappointment… no.. Sun and Moon was really cute but it kinda felt like Ash just went backwards. I hope when Ash comes back so does Serene, Clemont and Bonnie… they were such an entertaining group!! I miss them 🥲
True but if they keep having each region being 6ep then going to another region and go to all 9 like that we want see kanto again till ep 54 which is great for the story can’t wait to see what region is next after paldea I would like alola or galar

Horizons is literally beautiful already, awesome art style, music, animation- and Sprigatito the beloved cat. I'm a big story lover, so I'm not a fan of episodes that bounce around everywhere. For example, owl house barely had any episodes that were filler and even if an episode did seem like a filler it still at least had something to do with the characters.
Totally and completely agree. I honestly hate journeys for various reasons, some being the ones you metioned where over half the series was set in Kanto and the episodes had no corralation to each other.
As someone who grew up watching pokemon I had no real issues with journeys. I mean I didn't expect the episodes to flow when I say the name..it's called journeys. The episodes aren't meant to flow. The episodes are meant to be random I mean it defeats the purpose of calling it journeys if one episode carries into another one constantly. I loved wondering what would happen next and what ash goh and Chloe would get themselves into. It's what made it so much fun to watch
This is why I love Horizons, it actually feels like an actual anime with a cohesive plot between episodes. The issue with past Pokemon seasons is that, with the exception of the Gym episodes, the Legendary Pokemon plot episodes (like dealing with Cyrus and Dialga and Palkia in DP) and the Pokemon Leage at the end of the series, it was just a Person/Pokemon of the Week format. Where they'd meet a person or a Pokemon that had some sort of problem, Team Rocket would show up to try and steal Pikachu (and possibly the other Pokemon) and then while dealing with Team Rocket, the problem would be resolved, or it would help them solve the problem, and then they'd move on their way for the next POTW to show up next episode.
@natalimoina How so? Yes, you had the plot episodes where he battled a Gym or encountered that gen's legendaries, but the episodes in-between never pushed the plot and could mostly be skipped. Whereas Horizons, every episode pushes the plot, and you can't really skip an episode, or you'll miss out on something plot relevant.
Idk, I love shows that don't have a fixed plot and are just some random problems weekly like the old seasons you described. It just feels so much more realistic and I just love it. But I also kinda like plot driven story. So can't complain about others. I just love the first more, that's why I love fillers in anime and wished there where more. Feels relaxing

I think imma pick pokemon back up. In 2017 i decided to watch all the episodes from the beginning but when i got to the voice actor change i couldnt bring myself to watching anymore. I’d grown way too attached to the original cast and despite growing up with the new VA’s their voices felt off. Now that there are completely new characters i’ll probably start watching it again
Yea I feel like the voices sound a bit forced and weird sometimes. Like some of the girl characters just don’t let their voice come out like Lillie and Ash’s mom and it ends up sounding kind of weird and childish
The thing they fixed the most was making sure that Horizons doesn’t have a Goh, I didn’t like how they let Goh keep Suicune and Regieleki after the series ended, but I’m glad they are not doing it with Pokémon Horizons because Goh didn’t deserve legendaries which was unfair along with his easy catches, but I’m glad Goh isn’t gonna appear anymore
I definitely understand. Personally I really loved Goh’s character, I mostly blame the easy catches on the writing team though. Goh was ready to release suicune, it was the story writing team that had him keep suicune.

One episode of Chronicles had a veteran preparing to battle a Moltres with a Salamence. He ultimately didn’t capture the Pokémon because Team Rocket interfered and wanted to face Moltres at its best. That seemed like good writing to me. An experienced trainer who worked extremely hard and has the skills needed to stand against a legend. Contrast a rookie who seems to need lax writers helping him out. Plus, might be better to let the Legendaries go in the end. I’d say a lot of the appeal of catching one is just being able to come out on top in a fair fight.

Tbh the peak for me was XYZ and I’ve hated the series after. XYZ gave me that thrill when I watched it because they had a big bad villain and it felt like we were watching an actual teenager. He was mature in that serious and he became so strong but then the reason I hate sun and moon is because they took that away immediately. They put him in school even though he didn’t need it. It felt like they where downgrading his character immensely. Sun and Moon is funny and wholesome but it didn’t portray his growth as much as series before him. Also Journeys is where this fucker stayed in a lab and wasn’t journeying town to town like he always was so it was off set and repetitive.
It's a good series, coming from someone who watched and played pokemon basically their ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE. I am happy to see ash achieving his dream, i am also happy that we have a change of main caste and goals. It's refreshing to say the least man, anyone who disagrees are either blinded by nostalgia or haven't watched the new series yet.
That episodic problem with Journeys... I also felt it for Sun and Moon. Like 30-something episodes in and Ash had beaten Melemele Island and didn't even seem to have any inclination of challenges on the other islands nor expressed a desire to challenge them. I literally dropped Gen 7's anime between the Baseball Episode and the Ultra Lusamine arc then again until the Pokémon League.

One thing I like about Sun and Moon that other Pokémon series didn’t do is how Ash and the other characters genuinely feel like actual friends rather than companions. Because of that, I feel like the ending had a much bigger impact on me than previous series.
i mean journeys was episodic bcoz the writers know from the start that this is ash final season. so there really wasnt much thought after they scripted the important episodes of ash and gohs journey. but they need to buy time, they need to stretch it out so they made used of ash going around regions. Horizon is a new start, a story that still doesnt have a sure goal or end in mind
Im still hoping that Ash will show up in the series as a sort of final boss. Imagine him at like 20ish with a stacked team and maybe a legendary, idk if I like Latias so I think Ho oh would be a cool fit.

I'm pretty curious to see how they do Horizons when it's released in America! It's all shame for us that Ash is going away after 25 Years but hopefully someday he'll make a cameo or mentioned in the show. I actually watched Indigo Plateau, XYZ, Sun and Moon, then Journeys. I'm more of a Movie than a TV Show person but it's great to experience the story and lore of Ash in the Pokémon World!
I loved Journeys but yeah I wish that they explored the new region more, but I thought it was a fresh brilliant adventure across the whole world with Ash and Goh.

I like how unique the story feels, and having new protagonists in general is just a breath of fresh air My main issues so far are just that friede tends to handle their fights too often, and they dont use their pokemon other than their starters much

I think they were trying to break the mold with sun/moon and journeys. Obviously it didnt work perfectly, but before it was always the main characters camping out or staying at a pokemon center. For 15 years. For me, i never watched a lot of sun/moon but i liked journeys change of pace. It felt more grounded and was different enough from ash always trying to get to the next gym. My only real complaint i had with journeys was how much ashs character didnt make sense. In X and Y he had matured from the sarcastic and ignorant character from the original show and took things a bit more serious (I really enjoyed x and y). But then when we got to sun/moon and journeys he was a goofy character and didnt break from his smile that often, which is why i loved how he was during the masters eight battles. They were so intense and you were never sure what would happen next. If i wasnt spoiled of ashs victory, i probably would have cried at the ending. (Sorry for the tangent but i just watched the finale the other day because i waited for the dub on netflix and i needed to express my feelings for the show)

I'm inclined to agree. While the old formula worked, this one feels like it's aimed at a more older audience as well as the usual demographic.

this was my only problem with journeys and to see it didn’t transfer to pokémon horizon gives me hope people will actually give the show a chance

That episodic problem with Journeys... I also felt it for Sun and Moon.
Like 30-something episodes in and Ash had beaten Melemele Island and didn't even seem to have any inclination of challenges on the other islands nor expressed a desire to challenge them.
I literally dropped Gen 7's anime between the Baseball Episode and the Ultra Lusamine arc then again until the Pokémon League.
Yea sun and moon was kinda like a slice of life anime I actually liked it tho I just wish Ash had won the Kalos league instead cuz that anime felt more focused on the battles
I don’t even know what’s happening in Pokémon. I want to know what is happening but the last time I watched Pokémon was in early 2010s 😅
I never even started pokemon(I indeed to for years but never knew where to begin with and I always had something else on my hand)
So seeing all this different opinions feels kinda weird and funny/interesting
One thing I like about Sun and Moon that other Pokémon series didn’t do is how Ash and the other characters genuinely feel like actual friends rather than companions. Because of that, I feel like the ending had a much bigger impact on me than previous series.
i mean journeys was episodic bcoz the writers know from the start that this is ash final season.
so there really wasnt much thought after they scripted the important episodes of ash and gohs journey.
but they need to buy time, they need to stretch it out so they made used of ash going around regions.
Horizon is a new start, a story that still doesnt have a sure goal or end in mind

Honestly the episodic style of journeys was what made it so fun for me to watch.
I'm pretty curious to see how they do Horizons when it's released in America! It's all shame for us that Ash is going away after 25 Years but hopefully someday he'll make a cameo or mentioned in the show. I actually watched Indigo Plateau, XYZ, Sun and Moon, then Journeys. I'm more of a Movie than a TV Show person but it's great to experience the story and lore of Ash in the Pokémon World!

If you Remember then First Season of Pokemon Series started this way Ash and Pikachu gets attacked by pedgiots cliffhangers but that later went a little downhill after First 30-20 episodes

It already is, the animation is x y level and the episodes actually have continuity, it has the potential to be top 5 maybe even top 3 pokemon seasons.

To me it feels like in order to get as much money as possible the producers wanted step away from the main anime style the series was known for and become a slice of life anime but they also still wanted to keep all the stuff from the previous show which is just a bad idea

I like how unique the story feels, and having new protagonists in general is just a breath of fresh air
My main issues so far are just that friede tends to handle their fights too often, and they dont use their pokemon other than their starters much

I think they were trying to break the mold with sun/moon and journeys. Obviously it didnt work perfectly, but before it was always the main characters camping out or staying at a pokemon center. For 15 years. For me, i never watched a lot of sun/moon but i liked journeys change of pace. It felt more grounded and was different enough from ash always trying to get to the next gym. My only real complaint i had with journeys was how much ashs character didnt make sense. In X and Y he had matured from the sarcastic and ignorant character from the original show and took things a bit more serious (I really enjoyed x and y). But then when we got to sun/moon and journeys he was a goofy character and didnt break from his smile that often, which is why i loved how he was during the masters eight battles. They were so intense and you were never sure what would happen next. If i wasnt spoiled of ashs victory, i probably would have cried at the ending. (Sorry for the tangent but i just watched the finale the other day because i waited for the dub on netflix and i needed to express my feelings for the show)
