"Rush is for grown ups" OMG! that is something I wish I would have said to people that criticized this band and gave me a hard time for being a Rush fan. Great Comment!
The Canadian music scene was dynamic and talented in the 70's and 80's, but was mostly kept in the shade. Even today the maples are more shaded than the mighty oaks.🌳
What makes the lyrics of The Trees so good is that they tell a story that's clearly an allegory, without it being at all clear what the moral of the story is. I've heard it interpreted in many ways, and have about a half-dozen of my own. But in the end, the message of all of them is that we need to figure out a balance to things consciously; because if we don't, like in nature, the balance will be restored in ways that don't pay any heed to the lives of the individuals involved. In short, think about balance, or people will die as a consequence.
If you do The Garden, make sure you do the live in Dallas from the Clockwork Angels tour. They had a string section on stage for that tour and the performance is magical.
Heh, yeah I knew this would be controversial. Some people like how the comic book version hand-holds the reactor through it, others figure that they should work it on out their own, and/or that the comic book portrayal cheapens the story. I think it'll be OK whatever she does, however, in the end it's still 2112.
Again great reacción, Shen you do 2112, the best for you Is the cómic boom versión and also have the lirycs close. I'm Shure that you be amazing and speechless. Love your reactions
I agree. For a reaction video, the comic book version is the best for all to view. If you are alone and listening for the first time, I recommend just getting the studio album and a lyric sheet
I love this whole album, Hemispheres (1978), one of the top albums for me, but of course I love everything Rush does. The Trees is a really cool song, I love how Geddy sings it and this live performance is even greater than the album version for me. La Villa Strangiato is the next logical song to listen to, it's right after The Trees on the album and it's also one of their best works, an instrumental even. Rush does for you what it does for me, I'm sure of it! lol 😄 Rush has opened my listening style and experience with music.
I hadn't listened to hemispheres for like 20 years, and a couple of months ago i put it on and holy cow.... i honestly think that was the peak of their creativity and power..
Never has there been a better metaphor for class warfare and social injustice ever written! Another strong testament to Neil's prowess as a wordsmith!❤️💙🤘❤️🤘
Or you could say this song was about jealously, or the inevitable failure of regulation, or you could say this was about how enforced equality is destined to fail. Except that when asked what the metaphor or allegory in this song really was, Neil Peart said it was just a song about trees! If you want a still-timely song about social injustice, check out "Witch Hunt." Amazing!
LOVING your Rush reactions! May I suggest watching the animated story version of 2112 to better understand the story and to immerse yourself in it. It’s really well done. I’m going to see a laser show at our planetarium tomorrow night that features the entire 2112 album - cannot wait ✌🏻
Back in the 1970s, and up until Exit Stage Left, Neil would use actual wood blocks as part of an entire percussion kit also consisting of tubular bells, chimes, and a few other instruments; in later years, he'd simply trigger those sounds on his electeic drum kit, which IMO just doesn't sound the same. If you'd like to hear the original percussion sounds, I'd like to recommend Closer To The Heart, either the official music video or the Exit Stage Left performance, whose lyrics also carry an important message. Have a wonderful evening, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

Neil: Hmm what should I use to punch up a song about trees? Wood blocks! Yes, you caught the oak and maple reference. Well done. There are lots of ways to interpret these lyrics. Neil likes to make you think and when asked about the song, he just said “it’s just a dumb song about trees,”, because I believe in his mind, he thought why should I tell you? the point is to make you think about it. no shortcuts!
Thank you for this one. I was one of the people who requested it and this particular performance. I feel The Trees doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I’ve always seen it as a metaphor for class struggle. The “hatchet, axe and saw” could mean death as we are all equal in the eyes of the Grim Reaper. Then there is the metaphor about Canada (I’m Canadian) and the USA. On another note, I still have my original vinyl of 2112 and I was listening to it yesterday.
There was a rumor, going around the forest, that the humans may have put the maples up to it, to get more wood out the deal without angering the rest of the forest (the oaks had it coming to them). Sucked for the oaks, didn't help the maples at all and the humans got the wood. Typical! 😏

When they recorded this for the album, went outside with a mic to grab the birdies and frogs, too fun, too cool, too masterpiece.
Geddy had a lot of triggers he liked to play with.. at the end, probably a shout out to his pups, rip dear fur babies... always loved seeing Alex with his tele, rumor was he wrote a lot of music on it. Can't wait for 2112, but i think my favorite period was A Fairwell to Kings through Moving Pictures. Love everything (well almost) they did but that period was just them at their best before tragedy struck. They have such a deep library, and why they are the soundtrack to my life.
The number of odd time changes in that song are phenomenal. A masterpiece in an overflowing catalog of masterpieces. Adore your reactions and can't wait for 2112. On vinyl, side one is a single story being told. Another example of this is side one of Hemispheres (the first time I heard it at age 12, it nearly shattered my tender psyche, it was so technically marvelous).
A great, relatively short song that showcases what masters these guys were at each of their instruments....and then there's the lyrics making it even more amazing.
2112 will feature the screechier side of Geddy's voice, but the complex story makes up for that. There is an excellent video version on RUclips portraying it as an animated comic strip. It doesn't detract from the music at all, and I think it helps convey the story .
2112, the album was a turning point , it came after Caress of Steel, which was not well received. The record Co. wanted them making radio frendly songs, but the band decided were doing it our way, after 2112 the record co. never bothered RUSH again.
You are just a delight! You make us all so happy in how you appreciate and “get” what makes RUSH so special. The Trees are one of my top 3 favorite RUSH songs. To me the different types of trees are representative of different peoples. And how if we don’t try to get along we will all have the same end and that is societal destruction. I still get weepy when I hear the boys. I miss my drumming hero and the lessons he taught us about life. Thank you RH Neighbor♥️
You should check out Alex's acoustic solo "Broon's Bane." It's the 1:09 intro to The Trees on Exit Stage Left. You will cry when you do The Garden, so have a hanky ready.

It's just occurred to me that every Rush song is interesting. There's always something going on, transitions, time changes, left turns, you name it. As you said you need some teeth in your mouth to appreciate Rush. Or indeed to have once had teeth in your mouth. 😂
I like to listen to Rush songs four times each. Once to key on the drums, once to key on the guitar, once to key on the bass and finally, one just because. 😁
Neil wrote like an old soul, so their music gets better with age. Anyway, 2112 in Toronto at Molson Arena,1997 is the best version. Don't mess it up. Lol

@@redheadedneighbor Alex and Geddy still live in Toronto and they're seen around town once in a while and they'll always stop to talk to a fan. They're just a couple of really decent, nice, funny Canadian guys who make time for anyone. Heck, they've been married to their high school sweethearts for 50 years, so they can't be that bad. Reach out, they don't file copyright infringement suits and I'm sure they'd make time to do an interview on your channel. Keep up the great reactions.
What I love most about this song: notice how in the first verse the Maples say the Oaks are just too lofty, but in the final verse the Oaks are just too GREEDY. The result is hatchet axe and saw wrecking everyone
I grew up in eastern Toronto at a time when Rush was one of the sought-after bands we got to play at our high school. Rarely saw them live after that until in the 90s when I saw them again in Toronto, where they pretty much liquified my insides at the Air Canada center. It was really bad accoustics, but I do love the band, as many songs reflected growing up in suburbia at that time. I have also become a Nightwish fan more recently.
Ah yes, the Queen is holding court again. Splendid. Eventually you will want to do The Garden. The recorded in Dallas with the strings ensemble is the best version. A ballad and message for our times and yes, us grownups... and dreamers. Have fun with 2112.
I’m sure you will love “The Garden” by Rush from The Clockwork Angels Tour. The last song from de last album “For example, when these virtuoso artists on violin, viola, cello, and double-bass executed David’s plangent orchestration for ‘The Garden,’ there was not a dry eye in the studio.” Neil Peart
Masters at work. Everything they do is carefully thought of. They often said that they always ask themselves if what they'd like to do really serves the song. If not, they'd leave it out.
Thank you hon for your reviewing of this incredible band of true brothers! Going forward, I recommend doing the studio album versions, but I just love that you are doing Rush regardless! ❤
You are the perfect Rush reviewer - please keep going. Can't wait for 2112. And yes, Rush are for grown-ups. You have to listen many, many times to fully grasp what they are putting down.
I first bought 2112 in 1978 when I was thirteen. It had a profound effect on my philosophical development and led me to explore Ayn Rand, starting with Anthem, then Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead.
If you love this one The Garden will melt your face. Like "The Trees" it changes your prospective, take a few steps back and look at society or yourself in a bigger picture. I think you will fall in love with The Garden because it's more introspective and has a way of morphing as your journey in life does, had a tough day put your headphone's on and play "The Garden" It is what it is and whatever Time is still the infinite jest
Thank you :) don't be afraid of 2112, it's literally a move that unfolds in your head.. read the lyrics along... Personally i wouldn't do the animated video (the ending is wrong as far as i'm concerned) but it's all interpretation... P.S.... be afraid of hemispheres, not 2112 :) Do you read the lyrics when you watch these? really should with rush :) every song is a story...
2112 was the first Rush song I heard. I was so blown away and awe inspired. I went out and bought the album. That was in 1978. Instant Rush fan. Trees is one of top 5 favorite songs. Other great songs on the 2112 album Passage to Bangkok & Tears. ❤🔥🌳🌲🤘

Saw this at Glasgow Apollo (sadly gone now) in 1980 (I think?, was a long time ago!), but do recall my voice will be somewhere in the mix of Exit Stage Left ❤
Nice reaction. Any version of The Trees is great, I especially love the one that's led into by Brooms Bane on their 1981 moving pictures tour. Did you do La Villa Strangiato yet?
I love how you show your enthusiasm for Rush's music, just like I did in the mid-eighties when I discovered them and they changed my perception of music. Keep exploring, you won´t regret.
Old School RUSH, The Trees! 🙂 🌳🌲2112 is an absolute must! Don’t worry, it’s one of the very best concept albums of all time even though it’s only half concept (the first side of the record) You are going to love it, it’s so different from everything else, even in their own catalog! You never forget the first time you listen to 2112! I was 13 years old when I did, not long after it came out. Looking at the cover art alone the first time, I knew that this was something special. It’s a thing, a very RUSH thing. It might be THE MOST RUSH Thing. I predict you using the word WOW more than once. 😁👍 It’s a cool ride.
Rush... your favorite band's favorite band! You could say that instead of just writing music, they compose it. Every note of every instrument, every word, every pause... very deliberate and has meaning. I've been listening since 1982, and they still affect me with how profound they are. I would suggest the studio version of "2112" to react to because it is in it's origional form and it is performed as they were when they created it. They are awesome live, but to get the full effect of this masterpiece, i believe it is best experienced in it's origional form. Loving your Rush reactions! You have a new sub! 👍
I hope you see the many comments for “The Garden”. 2112… the very first song I listened to by this amazing band. Blew me away! You’re in for a treat with 2112. As a tribute to my introduction to Rush it’s part of my email address! As for “The Garden” have a hankie ready Peace out
I wish that you had reacted to the official video because that is when they initially wrote it. I like to see the music of the time. This video is decades later. Still cool no doubt, but different. Please do not be intimidated by reacting to 2112. Once you experience the beautiful production and performance, you will realize that it is the quickest 20 minutes of your life. It will go by so fast and you will experience so many emotions along the way. Enjoy your ride and thanks again for what you do.
SWEEEET!! I've always said studio version first but this is the best version I've seen of this song which is a Top 10 favorite RUSH for me!!! Great Channel Red ♥️ Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I've always seen this as a bit of a political statement, but not a pointed one. The maples are, of course, Canada and the oaks are the United States. In many ways, when somebody talks about America, they mean the US, yet Canada seems overshadowed, and should not be. We have an unprotected border and have never needed to have it any other way. We are partners as nations in many ways. Just my take.
I think the song is about people. Some groups of people think they need to create laws to make things "fair" rather then working hard. So they create laws to discriminate against successful/hardworking people. It's kinda like "socialism", which tries to make everyone be "equal", but in the end everyone ends up screwed over.
F'n awesome RHN !!!! I started listening to them when I was 10 in 1975 so not really an adult. I was hooked from then on. Can't wait for 2112. It will be great no matter which version you do. Glad you are a new fan of the band. Cheers from the great white north eh !!! 🇨🇦
Rush music and lyrics is timeless in my mind, it's music I was captivated by at age 13 and still am at 58 and to my mind's ears it still sounds as fresh and interesting and has not dated like classical music, it will never get beyond its sell by date as it does not have one being pretty unique.
Ahoy young lady, another great reaction to the masters, I can't remember seeing you reacting to, "THE CAMERA EYE", yet ??? from their 'Moving Picture's', album. Obviously it's another master piece so be carefull when you try it. Prepare a nice chair and a tea or coffee for 2112, your feet are gonna leave the ground. Three cheers to you many thanks
You’ll appreciate the Garden - but be prepared that it has an element of sentimentality to it. It was the last song on their last studio album and has a very moving message. It will MOVE you… and maybe bring on a tear… as it did with me when I saw them for the very last time (saw them 5 or 6 times) before Neil’s passing. It was a perfect swan song. I really like your Rush reactions and it impresses me that you have gravitated to Rush so intensely. Reminds me of… ME! My life was changed when I first heard the Spirit of Radio… early in the wee hours of the morning on my paper route in 1980. I heard the song in a block of songs… so when they didn’t announced the song title, I raced home and called the radio station - because I HAD TO KNOW who performed it. They influenced my life in many ways. I know it is hard to listen to the trees for the 1st time and get the lyrics so I would urge you to listen to it again - studying the lyrics… because they are brilliant. Rush is certainly “essential listening” - to my musical taste.
OK, Lets GOOO ! Don't be worried about 2112, its just like watching a great movie, or reading a wonderful book. Tree's - One of Rush's shortest songs, but don't let that fool you.....still awesome. Lyrics and story telling.....just magic. I prefer the studio version for this song, make sure you give it a listen for your own enjoyment. Cheerz!!!!

Yes, Rush is for grownups...INTELLIGENT grownups! So many of their songs have some deeper meaning to them.
I’m sure you will love “The Garden” by Rush from The Clockwork Angels Tour. The last song from de last album
“For example, when these virtuoso artists on violin, viola, cello, and double-bass executed David’s plangent orchestration for ‘The Garden,’ there was not a dry eye in the studio.” Neil Peart
Keep the tissues at hand.
@@williamdemerchant7295 for sure
It had a profound effect on my philosophical development and led me to explore Ayn Rand, starting with Anthem, then Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead.
rush makes you feel, that's the best way i can describe it.
If you love this one The Garden will melt your face. Like "The Trees" it changes your prospective, take a few steps back and look at society or yourself in a bigger picture. I think you will fall in love with The Garden because it's more introspective and has a way of morphing as your journey in life does, had a tough day put your headphone's on and play "The Garden"
It is what it is and whatever
Time is still the infinite jest
Most music in the last 60 years seems mundane when compared to Rush in 2024... Enjoy the ride! A fan since 1976. RIP Professor.
Thank you :)
don't be afraid of 2112, it's literally a move that unfolds in your head.. read the lyrics along... Personally i wouldn't do the animated video (the ending is wrong as far as i'm concerned) but it's all interpretation...
P.S.... be afraid of hemispheres, not 2112 :)
Do you read the lyrics when you watch these? really should with rush :) every song is a story...
The endings better in the comic book version imo. At least our dude survives. 😊
@@Fred-vy1hm spoiler :( but yeah, hope she doesn't see that before watching
NO COMIC VIDEO! Just soak in the music and fig the story out later
2112 was the first Rush song I heard. I was so blown away and awe inspired. I went out and bought the album. That was in 1978. Instant Rush fan. Trees is one of top 5 favorite songs. Other great songs on the 2112 album Passage to Bangkok & Tears. ❤🔥🌳🌲🤘
7:45 "...and the Trees are all kept equal, by hatch, axe and saw!...............😮 (love your reaction 😊)
I love watching the 💡click on as the youth learn the truths.
💚
Saw this at Glasgow Apollo (sadly gone now) in 1980 (I think?, was a long time ago!), but do recall my voice will be somewhere in the mix of Exit Stage Left ❤
Nice reaction. Any version of The Trees is great, I especially love the one that's led into by Brooms Bane on their 1981 moving pictures tour. Did you do La Villa Strangiato yet?
Great reaction and a video I've never seen.😮😮😮😮😊😊😊
Liking the shirt 😎
IMHO, want early days Rush live. 2112 live at Capitol 1976
I love how you show your enthusiasm for Rush's music, just like I did in the mid-eighties when I discovered them and they changed my perception of music. Keep exploring, you won´t regret.
Zero pressure. Just hanging out to relive these first experiences. Great watch along and looking forward to 2112.
I personally like the Exit, Stage Left version of the The Trees the best.
@@highstepperARF ESL=favorite live album ever
2112 is when Rush truly became Rush
It’s a cool ride.
Rush... your favorite band's favorite band!
We are music nurds 😂🤣
@@allengray5748 2112 at a planetarium. That would be awesome.
I guess I'm an old soul, started listening to them as a 7 year old back in 74, haven't stopped.
Love your Rush reactions, and your genuineness👍👍🔥🔥🔥
F'n awesome RHN !!!! I started listening to them when I was 10 in 1975 so not really an adult. I was hooked from then on. Can't wait for 2112. It will be great no matter which version you do. Glad you are a new fan of the band. Cheers from the great white north eh !!! 🇨🇦
6:56 the happiest, most playful, most joyful 20 seconds in all of rock and roll
Rush music and lyrics is timeless in my mind, it's music I was captivated by at age 13 and still am at 58 and to my mind's ears it still sounds as fresh and interesting and has not dated like classical music, it will never get beyond its sell by date as it does not have one being pretty unique.
Thinking people's music
Awesome, ❤❤❤your reaction 👍👍👍
Ahoy young lady, another great reaction to the masters, I can't remember seeing you reacting to, "THE CAMERA EYE", yet ??? from their 'Moving Picture's', album. Obviously it's another master piece so be carefull when you try it. Prepare a nice chair and a tea or coffee for 2112, your feet are gonna leave the ground. Three cheers to you many thanks
"They are necessary". You got that right.
Did you know, Alex Lifeson INVENTED that acoustic guitar stand, allowing him to play acoustic with his electric still on....
ANIMATE from the same concert,,,, masterfull,,,,,,keep rockin,,,,,🤘🤘🤘
OK, Lets GOOO !
Don't be worried about 2112, its just like watching a great movie, or reading a wonderful book.
Tree's - One of Rush's shortest songs, but don't let that fool you.....still awesome. Lyrics and story telling.....just magic.
I prefer the studio version for this song, make sure you give it a listen for your own enjoyment.
Cheerz!!!!
I hope you see the many comments for “The Garden”.
