  • You can’t put a man into a machine and then complain that he still makes humane decisions. Alex Murphy is a star graduate, a devout catholic, and a caring father. All reports say he has a great sense of duty. He was the first and the most successful candidate in the Robocop program. In this movie review we will analyze the details of the transformation of the main character of the fantastic action movie "RoboCop" 1987 and «RoboCop» 2014.

You know, I always wondered why Murphy couldn't just have tried to contact his family after his conversion, but it was obvious now why that was. His body was buried in a police funeral, and his wife and son assumed him dead. Trying to find them would have ruined their new lives. His success was because of his previous life as a devout police officer. And the rest really wouldn't have mattered. He carried himself into his new life of continued duty for the Detroit police department. He became the hero he wanted to show his son that he already was.

Man, when you're doing a video like this, you could at least refresh some primary school knowledge about human anatomy and be better than Robocop remake creators.
In order to survive, brain needs to have close to all natural internal organs, that is not just the lungs, but also liver, kidneys, thymus and a few others, just to replenish the blood, clean it and protect the brain from infections.

Loosely researched..Alex's face was molded, not removed, and a resistant cold fleshlike mask was added to give a Robo face to honor the donor. Furthermore, Murphy's cardiac and nervous system was used to supply the brain organically, not just the shocks used during life support. The computer chip enhancements ultimately allowed the brain to support a command and AI processor

There are some anime that deal with this whole concept. Same era in time. About a cop, in a robot body, just a brain, and a tongue. He would bite his tongue.. just to FEEL and had to be fed drugs to keep him sane. True horror. A brain, in a box, cannot feel, cannot breath, the brain, starved for sensation and data input slowly goes mad.

What made Alex Murphy work as RoboCop:
He was mentally tough-he knowingly replaced a dead police officer (Frank Frederickson) while in the locker room. AND fearlessly pursued Boddicker's gang.
He was physically tough-not only was he alive after being shot, he was still fully conscious before receiving the death blow to the head.
He was spiritually tough-besides his Catholic faith; his last thought was his wife and son waving goodbye (for the final time) as he drove away.🚓

The fourth directive causes him to shut down if he attempts to arrest a senior OCP employee. In the original when he tries to arrest Dick Jones he's fighting the shut down procendure from Directive Four. Whether he was feeling pain while doing it is debatable. The one scene where he does feel extreme pain is when Clarence Boddicker stabs him in the chest with the iron bar at steel mill. And of course there are few scenes he Robocop 2 where he does feel pain. The first being when Cain's gang are pulling him apart and as you mention throughout the scenes when he's in pieces. Even in the scene where he electrocutes himself you can clearly see the expression of pain in his mouth as he grits his teeth. I believe this could be because of the fact he also has his spine intact which of course carries a lot nerve signals to his brain.

Funny how the perception of what happen to Murphy changes by director - Paul Verhoeven, who directed the original Robocop, always assumed Murphy was really dead, and all OCP did was to digitalize Murphy's mind into a robot body and computer, in a very satirical way of showing he was nothing but a product to corporate america. So Robocop really is a machine with human conscience, all the way down to the core, accordingly to Verhoeven. He even says so in an interview to collider in 2016, when criticizing the 2014 remake for being too serious. Irvin Kershner, on the other hand, just followed the scraps from Frank's Miller original script, which was much darker (Something characteristic of Miller back in the day) - Implying both Robocop and Robocain still retained their human brains while in cyborg form, making them more akin to Frankestein's monster than a corporate america product.

I think in a TV show version some of Robocops maintenance staff explained that part of his brain was unstimulated and dormant. Which had caused his memory to be wiped. But they were able to activate it, and in that exact moment he totally freaked out as he remembered everything. Especially being maimed and murdered by Boddicker and his gang, and the unbearable emotional anguish of losing his family.
I think all that's left of Murphy really is his spine and central nervous system, digestive tract, lungs, brain and his face. The rest of him is the machine of Robocop. But despite their best efforts his humanity still breaks through. I'd like to imagine in Robocop 2 when he electrocutes himself and clears all his directives that he's pretty much entirely Alex Murphy just operating the Robocop machine.

    • @vksasdgaming9472
      @vksasdgaming9472 7 месяцев назад +1

Can't remember much of that show beyond it being passable. Fleshiness of bits you mentioned makes sense as lungs are very efficient and oxygenating blood and digestive system is very good at getting nutrients into body. He most likely retains his liver as well. Understandably not much attention is paid on waste removal. I think that those cluttering directives OCP had put in his head were like noises psychotic people hear and caused lots of confusion. Those three prime directives are so clear that they rarely interfere in Murphy's own thinking.

If I recall they have some of his ribcage, and most of his internal organs I had read somewhere he kept parts of his reproductive organs for hormone based reasons but I cant really find a source for that, in the first movie they go out of their way to say they saved his entire torso so its safe to assume its all in there somewhere. They also cut off one of his arms they saved becasue the ocp guy only wanted a torso, though if we go based off of the second movie where he is litteraly just a torso and one arm, that arm could still be partially inside his right arm the one that uses the gun and why he still uses it to fire.
Atleast for me I like to think robocop is basically a torso with one arm and hes still about 50ish percent human.

Away from David in "Artificial Intelligence" Murphy is one of the SciFi characters whose destiny touched me most.
I never saw him as a superhero or sth like that.
For me he always was a severely disabled, traumatized man in total body prosthesis.
Doesn´t matter how much I love the look and design of that shiny armor, being caged into it must be a fate worse than death.
Unable to smell, hear, see and touch with natural sense organs, without the ability to feel when you´re touched....try to imagine that.
All the worse that a part of his human mind was left to Murphy after his horrible transformation, so he is permanently confronted with the memories of all he´s lost from his human life.
There´s just one other movie who appropriately describes the true dread of such an existence - it´s "Johnny got his gun" (1971)
Johnny, that is Murphy without his armor.
Metallica once made a song about it - "The One".
    Perfectly fits to Murphy, too.

If only the third movie were just as brutal. And more in theme with the first two. Lacking that content, weakened its potential. The remake had some good elements to it, great effects. But, without the brutality, took away the impact. Plus, the new Murphy was too cocky in that remake. He was better in the original. As for Robocop's drive in the first flick? Once he started to realize he was still human, he wanted to push away from what he became, the machine. And of course, sought to end the corruption of OCP with its connection to Bottiker.

The 2014 movie gets far too much hate for what it is. It _has_ to be its own movie otherwise people would just complain it's doing the exact same thing over again.
I absolutely love how much more "realistic" it tries to be. The science behind it all, so much of it brought to viewer attention unlike most films.
I also very much like the way they keep his humanity in 2014, rather than the original Murphy who was pretty much turned into a computer full and through but one which had memories that would affect its' functionality.
On the other hand 2014 Murphy is a human slapped inside a computer. He's still fully human mentally, just controlling the computer and body that he has been given.

I don't know about the cartoon or the comics, but it's possible that those had other Robocops as well. Something to consider for a future video. And don't worry too much about your voice in the video. So what if it's strange sounding to others, it's wonderful that you can speak multiple languages. Not many people can. Joerg from the Slingshot Channel releases two videos regularly. One in his native German, another in English. Perhaps you can do something similar. Keep up the great work!

In the 2014 remake, it's not his left hand that is salvaged, but his right. The hand he completely loses in the original and one reason that OG fans were pissed about the design of the new Robocop.
The right hand, that he was known to do his flourish with his pistol that he practiced for his son that loved a TV show where the hero did the same thing, was blown off.
It felt like a slap in the face. That and the remake went backwards with Murphy having humanity and losing it vs. gaining some semblance of it back.
