The straight to video Hellraiser movies is what happens when you have a studio that has the rights & license to make the movies and only needs to make a new entry to hold onto it at all costs. Because of this, they just shoehorned Pinhead & the cenobites and all Hellraiser related stuff into stories that have nothing to do with it in any way. Hopefully the new upcoming Hellraiser reboot on Hulu doesn’t feel like another wretched cash grab. I don’t have high hopes but we’ll see…
Taking aside 8 at least they worked Hellraiser into those movies in a ways that made sense and kept Doug Bradley. What you say applies to what they did for 9 and 10.
Candyman and Leatherface would be the only other horror icon that got put through the ringer like Pinhead… but it’s still not really close. Pinhead has been done dirty.
Kari Wuhrer has done many direct to video horror movie sequels. She was in 2 The Prophecy sequels and The Hitcher 2. She currently is a voice actress doing DC animated movies.
Deader is in my Top 5 of the franchise. I love Kari Wuhrer in it and the Romanian setting. I wished Pinhead was infused into it a more cohesive way. Still a high note in the back in end of this franchise.
Something about humans reanimating into a shell of their former selves instead of zombies really gets under my skin with age and experience. Pet Sematary does it best. It sucks this couldn’t have been it’s own movie because I think it could’ve been really disturbing.
The reason they filmed this entry in that foreign country was it giving tax breaks to movies. I think they also made two return of the living dead and The Prophecy sequels there as well at that time.
Awesome review! Deader is actually a guilty pleasure for me. Even though it’s not really a hellraiser movie I love the cult idea and how their leader is kind of trying to “beat” Pinhead. I also love Kari’s performance!
I 110 percent agree with your review my man. To a T! It’s such a shame how pinheaded is such an iconic character yet has never in my opinion, like you mentioned as well, has had a proper script that really captures the potential of not only pinhead but this type of gore period. This has sooo much potential with what they can do today like how it chapter 1 and 2 were amazing on every aspect cast, tech, plot, etc... on point
Great review Cody, I completely agree it's a great concept which could have worked better had it been originally written for a Hellraiser movie. The protagonist ending was shocking, the CGI gore looks awful, a shame because this one had potential to be something unique. Completely agree with you, Pinhead is completely misused in these movies. Can't wait watch your reaction to Hellraiser Revelations.
I'm enjoying these reviews immensely. I think they are all pretty bad after 4, but sometimes they are entertaining to pop on just to laugh at how bad they are.
Don't worry Cody! Hellworld actually feels like a Hellraiser movie despite those previous three none Hellraiser movies you reviewed... Hellword is actually up there on my top 5
@@michaelbolcato192 oh really? Hmmm not sure how I feel about that. Not really because of the female pinhead cause a devilish female pinhead could be very creepy, I’m far more creeped out by women villains than male villains. Not so sure about the Hulu release. Thank Christ I’m not a huge fan and just a casual fan. Hope they do a good job cause like Cody said, the Pinhead character is the most misused horror character. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
David Bruckner is making one as we speak. Having loved his previous stuff (The Ritual, The Night House, and the best segment from V/H/S) I'm really looking forward to it.
Also HBO is doing a hellraiser series, DGG is directing the firstt few episodes but the movie will be out first most likely. And pinhead will be female like in the story of the hellbound heart
I believe you mentioned in your entire blu ray special about doing some fav werewolf and vampire videos, you should just ditch the rest of the Hellraiser movies and do that lol.
Hey yo Cody, this isn’t Hellraiser related but, how do you feel about a Manhunt movie or even Twisted Metal? I always thought those video games have some potential to become a pretty decent horror movie if the right director was assigned to the job.
Idk about a manhunt movie (I'd see it if it looked well done) but what about a remake to the original game or a third one? Never would happen but fuck that would be great
You do bring up a good point, with how many of these movies they shoehorn him into, Pinhead has gotten a raw deal with his movies. Half expect one of those movies to give him a Guest Appearance spot in the opening credits. 😉😂 Just wait, later, they do have Pinhead played by someone else, but spoiler, script doesn't get any better.
Cody, you are the absolute best. I remember coming across your channel a couple years ago, but I must’ve forgot to subscribe. You resurfaced on my RUclips page one day and I couldn’t have been happier. You have such great passion for what you do, and that alone is all I need when watching content creation. I can respectfully agree and disagree with opinions as long as there’s a personal source, and you easily make this apparent through your videos. You have helped me out more than you may ever know through some pretty tough times in life and it’s your humor and down to earth conceptualization of your videos that really let me have something to look forward to. Keep up the hard work, I’m far from the only person that enjoys and appreciates your hard work.
And maybe they can have Doug Bradley Return as Pinhead in the Hellraiser Remake and Change things Up so that way No one Butchers the Pinhead Role Like The Guy from Hellraiser: Revelations
I'm on time for this one. Thanks Cody. At this point what more can I say. Im sorry for your pain Cody. I'm hoping this remake coming brings Hellraiser back to form. From what I here its a more faithful adaptation to the Novel Hellbound Heart. Plus Clive is behind it which is always a good sign. I can respect that. What I don't respect is shoehorning in the Cenobites to a non Hellraiser film. But great review Cody.✌
1, 2 and a few of the newer ones are available on Prime. I'd seen 1 and 2 so I figured I'd check out the ones after that, that were available. Yea they're pretty bad 🤣🤣..
What I hate about 5-6-7 is that the cenobites are barely in the movies, sometimes les than 10 minutes of screen time. Thats the only reason I'm watching these movies!
I actually thoroughly enjoyed this sequel. It's funny, I work afternoons, so I usually have a free 3ish hours in the morning after my routine and I just realized that ALL the Hellraiser movies are on Paramount+ so I decided I'd spend two weeks marathoning them before work. And just like you, I had previously seen the first 4, nothing else. I gotta say, after the bitter taste of 5 and 6, this one was ACTUALLY a breath of fresh air, I REALLY liked Amy, even though her end wasn't happy, I'm down for the doom and gloom, especially in this series.
Here is a huge info and history of judgement. It was originally written as a hellraiser movie after Gary turncliff asked for 1 million to make for dimension films. They turned him down as they wanted to make one for $300.000 and filmed and finished in 2 weeks so Gary took the script and turned it in to a non hellraiser script and tried to get the money through kickststarter but it didn't work. After revelations was done and the years past and they needed the right held they called him offered him the million and a 4 week shooting schedule pre, filmed and post all done in 4 weeks. So he grabbed the orignal asked Doug if he would do it but couldn't give him the money he wanted due to production cost. As Gary had to play multiple parts due to not having enough money for cast. Its the only sequel past 4 that is acully written as a hellraiser sequel. Another fact is hellworld was Henry cavells first movie
Im excited for the remake. Pinhead is going to be a woman. That's actually inline with the comics and Clive Barker's novel universe (Scarlett Gospels). He's actually The Hell Priest, and the title and power can go to anyone after him. Christy Cotton actually becomes Pinhead in the comics, its pretty amazing. If they handle the story right, this should be good.
Rooting for you man !! This franchise has a lot to offer, and A LOT to scoff at… You’re doing great !! Is there a specific company or producer of these great horror TShirts that you’re wearing ?
I remember watching this. I think the Deader was cool idea but I can see where Pinhead and gang were slide into it. I liked it but its not one I have rewatched if that says anything.
Hey Cody when you were talking about them rebooting the hellrsiser series they are now. It's gonna be a remake of the first movie were it's gonna adapt the novel written by Clive Barker and Clive Barker is gonna be a producer on it, and it looks like they are taking it seriously. You can research it if you want.
I don´t know if you read the book/story of Hellraiser but the movie is an almost exact representation of the story. The only difference is that Kirsten is the daughter of Larry. They´re just friends. Other than that all the same. So there´s no need to remake that.
Actually your wrong on this one Pinhead actually said it himself that this is a direct sequel/prequel to Bloodline the Deader cult leader is actually a descendant of the toy maker that built the original puzzle box.
As I said on yesterday's video, I think this is definitely the better one out of all the direct-to-video Hellraiser sequels. Inferno was average, Hellseeker was okay, this one's good, the next one is not that bad, but also not that good, and the ninth one is just not worth the watch. My personal rating for Revelations? Don't even bother watching if you're a fan of the franchise. 1 through 4 are great, and 7 is good. I say check those out.
I think the only Hellraiser film that you're gonna get some enjoyment from here on in is Judgement. It gets worser from here Cody. You have rock bottom to explore with the next few films.
I have this plus all the others with Doug Bradley and just those I haven't watched this one in a while I remember the leader of the deader cult being connected to the toy maker of Bloodline I maybe wrong I think I'll give them a rewatch soon.
my local video store never had this in stock it was always checked out. When I did finally get to watch it turned out I wasn't missing anything special
You’re a good man watching all these Hellraiser movies for us. I’ve never had an interest in watching any of them but it’s good to finally know what each one is about and how horrible most of them are. lol
Again props to you rokkin Phantasm since I’m a Phanboy I can’t help myself. Anyway out of all the Post Hellraiser Bloodline movies(aka the BEST and purest of Hellraiser) this one is my favorite out of all of them witch isn’t saying much considering everything I seen in Inferno to Hellworld and this being the only decent movie out of those 4, like you said for one we got a decent adequate protagonist something we hadn’t had since Bloodline I personally don’t think I like her better than or anywhere near Kirsty, Joey or Paul Merchant but previous 2 protagonists were abhorrent she is significantly better than those 2 without a doubt but again they set the bar incredibly low. I did like the Deader cult too it was a OG and interesting concept real nice refreshing take sure it is out of the realm of Hellraiser and has been after Bloodline and that is one major flaws in these movies but this one takes the lead in those movies and believe me Hellworld is a downgrade from here.
Deader is definitely my favorite of the DTV films, definitely not fantastic, I kinda think the concept of the film itself is cool and could've made for a decent movie if they didn't throw Hellraiser into it.
Someone correct me if I´m wrong but I get the sense that Cody reviews movies (more so franchises) as soon as he´s done watching them. I say so because he doesn´t take in consideration the points that, people like me and others that like and/or understand these movies, make. They don´t have to change his opinion but at least add something. For instance, I don´t remember the last time since this one that he´s praised Doug Bradley´s interpretation of Pinhead. Second, I know that I and other people, have mentioned that there´s no singular way to make use of the Hellraiser license. Sure, it was nice that they tried to tell a connecting story from 1 till 4 and even adding 6 but there wasn´t any need for that. He didn´t like INFERNO or HELLSEEKER but those explorations of hell from each of their protagonists was another way to go. And, basically it was (more or less) what happened in 1 and 2 with Frank and Julia. As for the remake I don´t have any hopes for it whatsover because of the casting. 1. Pinhead is an incredible male horror icon. There was no need to change him into a woman. If they were going to go that route then don´t use him at all. Use the female Cenobite of Hellraiser 1 and 2. After all, Clive Barker wanted to make her the lead but because Pinhead was so amazing and people liked him instantly they went for him as the lead Cenobite. 2. The only way I could get on board with it is if :A. Even though the character will be played by an actress Pinhead will still be acknowledge as male or B. If what they´re going to do with him is have him been androgynus. Sadly...we live in current times. What do I mean by that? That the actress is a transexual. That wasn´t something worth mentioning prior for the actress in previous work. He made the change and now is a woman. So be it. But Twitter made such a big deal that Pinhead would be played by a transexual. And, no matter the route they decide to go with Pinhead either Hulu themselves are going to make such a big deal of the transexual character that they´ll run a campaign based on that or even worse claim the BS that the character is "non binary" or certain "people" are going to be the ones on that train. So either they´ll make an issue of Pinhead being a transexual or even if Hulu decides to go female playing a male or androgynus and nothing more they´ll make it so that Pinhead is a representation of "non binaries".
Cody, you're truly doing God's work here, haha. I made it through the first 2 and just didn't have an interest because of how awful I heard they all were. I may give the 3rd one a shot since you said it was slasher like and that's where I like to live. I don't know how you did this series, Leprechaun, and Wrong Turn in one year, lol. GOAT mode activated. For me Hellraiser, Leprechaun, Wrong Turn, Amityville, and Puppetmaster are some of the most needlessly long series we have. Even with the worst of Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Nightmare, you can still have a good time. The worst of the ones above are just horrendous.
I'm currently watching all the Hellraiser movies all the way up to the new one. I finish the movie and then watch your review. I don't think I ever watched past the third one and it's hard to really get into the psychological type movies some of these have. The first few were right to the point. You opened the box, they came and paid for it. There are some aspects I like, You are right, these last three are getting repetitive, The centobites are hardly part of these movies. On to Hell World. Also, the CGI was really bad in this one. most notably when she was going through the narrow wall and the bugs scattered.
I think there’s a good version of this movie out there somewhere. If you just read the premise, it sounds pretty intriguing, it’s the execution of it in every way that lets it down. Movies 5, 6, 7 and 8 of this franchise all feel the same to be, the same level of bad and boring. However, I will say that this is my favourite of the franchise outside of the first four films.
This one's...okay. I don't think that its premise was as adaptable to Hellraiser as the Jacob's Ladder-style scripts of 5-6 were, and the whole thing feels like a waste of a decent original story. At the same time, it's easily, easily better than 3, 4, and 6. It sorta repeats the unforgivable mistake of 3-4 by turning Pinhead into a slasher movie villain at the end, but it's thankfully contained to the last few minutes rather than polluting the entire run time. And while it makes a completely pointless reference to the LeMarchand family tree, it doesn't commit the cardinal sin of reducing Kirsty Cotton to a cameo.
I really appreciate these reviews! Pinhead and the Cenobites are some of my fave film antags. But he might have the track record for some of the worst movies.
Just want to say that I really appreciate your format has not changed going full time. Just more videos. Some get overzealous and start changing good things. Keep up the great work. Also, with Hellraiser being so bad, what is the WORST franchise you have reviewed this far?
This one is soooo creepy lol still unnerves me no matter how many time I see it. It's a pity that you're not enjoying the movies but I will say as much as I love this franchise, the next one (Hellworld) is one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
They made these sequels basically to hold onto rights, like the children of the corn sequels, you want to hold onto rights you put out a movie, so you take a speck script, and then insert hellraiser into it.... I think they promised Doug Bradley a sequel that never happened so he did these movies in Hope that proper sequel would happen, until he couldn't anymore, this one is better then the last two in my opinion...
The movie is pretty bad, I recall the last two thirds of the movie just being more random visions and hallucinations, but with a different twist than the last two movies. And it's not in the blu-ray set? Damn, I got it for five dollars, in a DVD set of Hellraiser 3-8 and all five Prophecy movies. XD
This one is so so at this point the psychological style is tired. I liked it in Inferno because it felt fresh but by now it's so tired I agree I like the concept of a cult but it's not explored enough I actually think Pinhead drags the series down the mythology of this world is bigger than him and could work on its own.
The straight to video Hellraiser movies is what happens when you have a studio that has the rights & license to make the movies and only needs to make a new entry to hold onto it at all costs. Cody did u play Re4 Vr ? And will u do a Review
Your ranking on this series is going to be interesting A couple of good one and a big tie for last place. Can't wait 😎
I have a 6 film dvd Miramax Hellraiser collection and this one was included on it... Wonder why it's left out the bluray collection
Viewers wept
Oh boy, at least there’s only three more to go
You have my sympathies Mr Leach
Hellraiser: Deadrealm
Or Hellraiser: The Departed sound like better titles
it still baffles me that anybody ever thought this kind of CGI was good in any way.... other than that i really enjoy this review series.
Where did you find that hellraiser Blu ray set??
Revelations review should be exciting
I think there’s a good version of this movie out there somewhere. If you just read the premise, it sounds pretty intriguing, it’s the execution of it in every way that lets it down. Movies 5, 6, 7 and 8 of this franchise all feel the same to be, the same level of bad and boring. However, I will say that this is my favourite of the franchise outside of the first four films.
Inferno is good as well
Deader is what the series became after this film.
I don't smoke, but watching Deader even made me feel like I was getting lung cancer...
I actually quite enjoyed this one, my favourite outside of the original three
Just want to say that I really appreciate your format has not changed going full time. Just more videos. Some get overzealous and start changing good things. Keep up the great work. Also, with Hellraiser being so bad, what is the WORST franchise you have reviewed this far?
He just pops up at the end with a cenobite or two to tie it all up 😂
Speaking of the tshirt,… why is Phantasm never in the discussion. That was a bad ass couple movies
just found out David Bruckner is directing the hellraiser remake
Hellworld is gonna get "fuck this movie", I can already hear it
This one is soooo creepy lol still unnerves me no matter how many time I see it.
Great video. I agree with your review.
How many of these are there I have 6, is this the last one?!?!
No, there are 10 of these movies. The last one is called Hellraiser: Judgement, which came out on DVD and Blu-Ray 3 years ago.
I had no idea, thanks I thought we were close to ranking the franchise.
Doesn't The Puppetmaster series follow a similar vain of unrelated scripts being lightly modified to bring in the puppets?
People who made the void need to make a new hellraiser…………………
My fav of spinoff movies
I thought i knew the whole series but i actually havent heard of this one lol
