I would really appreciate if you could do a video in the future about mastering yourself instead of sending your mix to a mastering engineer since I am planning on doing it myself and could use a few tips on how to start as a beginner. Marvellous, thanks Chris! But can you explain the process of how you create the Master bus and track, quickly? I presume the ST Out channel was automatically created by Cubase when creating a new project (as well as Stereo in) and you have 1. Added a new track called Master 2. Added a new output bus called Master . I tried doing point 2, and Cubase created a track called 'Master' automatically but when I tried to route my Stereo out bus to the Master it was not an option. Help please.

    I can do a in the box mix with no problem but this mix is going through a Sum mixer, bus comp, and stereo eq. I want to print it like I hear it in my monitors.

    Great video Chris!! Do you use a external mixer? I just purchased the apollo x6 with the great upgraded converters and was wondering should I record and mix in the box or should I get a external mixer so I don't lose any AD/DA conversion when I mix down my final mix to a stereo wav file? I also would like to know how do you mix down your final mix do you mix it down to a stereo wav file to your deck top? I guess I'm just looking for the best way to this. I use the MacBook pro, Apollo twin, Apollo x6, external la 610 mic preamp, Cubase 9.5 pro Thanks!!!

    Great video! Though for some reason, I tend to think in reverse... I would call my very last fader (red one) the ST OUT, and the one where you stick the final sound altering plugins the MASTER. Maybe it's a beginner mistake for me to think like that?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  5 лет назад

      If it's only a different way of naming your channels, there's no problem with that. Unless I'm missing something

    • @korkenknopfus
      @korkenknopfus 5 лет назад +1

      Actually Chris’ template uses a kind of “pre” master bus, called ST OUT, that gets the whole sound of the project and is routed to the master bus. The reason to do so (or at least one of his reasons) is following: if you have only the master bus and want to apply some general processing to the mix (light eq or comp), this processing would be applied to a reference track, too, if you have one. On the other side, if you have this ST OUT group, you can apply your processing there and then route it to the master. So, the master bus can have only monitoring plug ins. As the reference track is routed to the master, but not to the ST OUT, the processing on ST OUT doesn’t affect it.

    • @alainpatry
      @alainpatry 5 лет назад

      @@korkenknopfus Yes, you explain it well. I'm just saying that for me, it is confusing to call to have ST OUT be the 2nd last item in the chain and call the very last one MASTER. If it was up to me, I would reverse the NAMES so that the 2nd last bus is called Master where we put the limiter etc. and THEN it goes to ST OUT (with monitoring only plugins) because the ST OUT is actually the signal going OUT of the DAW. Not sure why but to me, labeling things this way makes more sense to me. The only reason I don't is so that I can follow Chris' videos without getting confused.

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  5 лет назад

      I never "Print" a mix unless I want to get out of "the box" to send my mix in a summing box or a preamp to add some color but even then, It's been a long time since I did that. I do export in Real Time since I'm using an external Bus Compressor. I don't know if there's a difference in sound when bouncing offline vs Real Time. I'll have to test it. Honestly, I would worry too much about this.

  • @BrendanEderMusic
    @BrendanEderMusic 4 года назад

    Do folks really need to leave headroom anymore? I think that is just something left over from analog-leaning times. You just don't want to clip IMO, and the mastering engineer can just lower the volume of your mix digitally.

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 года назад +1

      For sure, as far as you don't clip you're fine. But I always advise to leave headroom of around 3-5db just for protection more than anything else cause if I don't, chances are that I will receive a mix that clips a bit and that happened to me more than once ;-)
