I think it's going to be a duality between his faithful, sactified side and his more ruthless and radical side. Thats really what's he's showcasing with this untitled track. Let's not forget that all his albums have been based on dichotomies (the good kid and the maad city/wickedness or weakness/ being morale vs big stepping etc)
I think Kendrick wants us to hold ourselves accountable a balance is needed. We all say we hate what has become of the music industry and what's being pushed. I don't care about what these celebrities have going on in their personal lives. Nobody is perfect no 1 sin is greater or lesser than the other. All I care about is what message are you using your platform for especially when this younger generation of kids is infatuated with these celebrity lives.
Kendrick is like a weatherman to me. He reports what is happening in the atmosphere. This is why he is able to tap into different energies to convey his messaging. There is a shift happening across the board for Every industry and I believe him communicating his faith is a product of him being tapped into what is happening across world. He has communicated that he feels called to redeem hip hop, so he is just flowing in his purpose.
Specially, with diddy being arrested, and suge knight being locked for life. Many of the past is getting exposed to pave way for the chosen ones. It’s happening in pro wrestling too. New people are taking over and new players are creating new opportunities
If we think back to the old lady praying over him and his friends on "Dying of Thirst" - that faith has always been present in his albums. I think what has changed with each project is what he wants to say to us about that faith and how he wants to use it. Seeking guidance, wondering if we're DAMNed, admitting he is human and not a savior, etc. And this next chapter feels like he wants to use his faith to crusade. If on GKMC he was seeking faith then this chapter feels like the Archangel Michael with the sword.
i think its more likely Kendrick retires before going to Christian rap. i just dont see that. but more to the point, i think Kendrick wants to usher in a balance of more substantive, authentic, meaningful lyricism in general, not necessarily faith-based rap
The faith aspect has always been present on Kendrick's music. I hope he's not going to shift to a completely gospel style of raps like Lecrae or what Kanye did with Donda and JIK. I'm not sure if I'm willing to hear Pastor Kendrick's preaches on a purely Christian album. That would be a huge turn off for me as a fan, since christian rap is very very narrow and niche as far as the themes go. But I'm positive he's going to make an interesting and nuanced theme out of his faith so I'm not worried.
That last piece of info you shared was something I never considered but a brilliant take. Saying that Kendrick strategically leaked all of his own dirt on Mr Morale for further reasons than just for therapy, That’s really interesting and makes sense. Most of Drakes shots lacked that “wow” factor because of his own admissions.
Absent Kendricks admissions Drake wouldnt be able to get this to stick anyway. Now hes lobbing more accusations with less source material in your alternate non Mr Morale world.
@@jeremyhechtI think one might want to consider the possibility it was a highly personal album after upheaval and a career peak... Kendrick taking direct shots coincides with something else. Him being off TDE. Ask your cohost dj hed why TDE would be inherently averse to beefing on wax. Theres very good reason.
Hello I am from South Africa 🇿🇦 Love the podcast sending Love for you and DJ Hed always so great to hear your difference of opinions I love Kenrick , Lermare and Dee 1
I think we can assume this based on his Christian rapper shout outs to Lecrae and dee-1. I would argue that he's always been spiritual and has always been technically an artist who speaks about God. I feel like originally Kendra, just wanted some parody and music. Wanted people to talk about some substance rather than just pacifying their listeners. But then I think he sees what's going on and wants the whole party to stop and stop hip hop being commercialized and go back to the origins.
I think he's the person to help reset (the main person) the culture. All that happened this week thus far, it's needed. I love substance and substance that make me dance even better. Great assessment, Jeremy. BTW, kdot is the black excellence I want to see on a mainstream stage.
Morning Jeremy Just on a less heavy side note... Love to see you are Cat Owned (not a cat owner), just like the rest of us... And we are NOT eating them. Thx. 😺
Hey Jeremy! I like your commentary & ideas. Thank you for sharing! I'm happy that Kendrick is taking a stance on what he believes. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world & ppl will always gravitate towards negatively. I don't see a day when no one will promote drug use, violence, money, & shallow stuff. All you can do is speak out on what you believe in & protect your own soul. I don't have the energy to give pearls to pigs. I like what Lecrae said in response to this way of thinking.
Have anyone heard LeCrea’s new song response to Kendrick. Also check out Ransom rapping over Kendrick’s music for Watch the Party Die. Both songs are 🔥🔥🔥🔥 We the fans want him to BALANCE his music. Not Like Us still is🔥🔥🔥
Kendrick’s music has always been largely coming from a Christian perspective. Only exception would be Mr Morale & The Big Steppers but he always explores biblical themes, and his conflicts within faith too. I don’t think he’s gonna make a traditional Christian Rap album but he may explore his faith a bit deeper, which he always has
i don’t think he’d go full christian or anything tbh bc he’s always talked about his spirituality and also how he does at times struggle with his faith. he’s saying he wants a healthy balance between everything and that we should be more mindful on what we say bc it could affect the younger generation. i do believe there should be more substance in music bc not even just kendrick but many artists have spoken out about how the industry is just getting worse
I just realized something, I don't believe Wayne has ever brought out anyone at anytime from his city to make them known. Um shouldn't his city be questioning Wayne about not bringing any of the artist from his city to his stage in the past 15 or more years🤔🤯😮But they expect or demand that Kendrick bring him to his stage because he is preforming in Wayne's city.🤔🙄🤒
It's one thing to speculate about an artist's lyrics or even guess at what direction their art might move in but a whole other matter to state with 'authority' what their motives were for makkng their art--particularly if you haven't even spoken to the artist about it. If you think that "MMATBS" was (amongst other things) a clever tactic to pre-empt exposure of his personal life then make it clear that that is your personal speculation rather than presenting it as if it were a known fact. ('This is what Kendrick was really doing and this is why he did it'...) The likes of What'sTheDirt is living up to their name and is already crawling around in your comments section, desperately looking for an angle for his upcoming tabloid hit-piece masquerading as a lyrical breakdown. I have to say that the idea of the album working as a pre-emptive confession is pretty obvious, so it's odd to see him thanking you for the idea as if it had never even occurred to him. 😂 More and more, I think one of the changes that needs to happen is for audiences to gradually reduce their reliance on 'the middle man' and start directly engaging with the artist's work in their own terms. Whether unwittingly or with malice, so many channels pass off speculation as fact and stoke unnecessary drama.
@jeremy_Hecht always appreciate your prespective...i agree Dot is trying to put substance back on the mainstream. I think it's so unfair. We are constantly demanding good music from Kendrick, but on the other hand, supporting the crapy music, downloading and having them on your playlist and enhancing these Artist figures. If the crap music is ignored, then Artist will be forced to up their game.
It was what Ye originally tried to do before he likely got his handlers and possibly cloned ... even still the Ye character tries to do it but stumbles due to ego or other vices ... we'll see how this attempt goes People should have took the Jesus wardrobe that last tour as a sign and that Dee-1 shoutout was more telling than the Lecrae one since Dee is actively calling out how godless and sinful today's music and rappers are
I wouldn't want it. when artists do this the quality of the music becomes one dimensional. look what happened with bob dylan. we go to music for the light and the darkness and all the messiness ofbthe contradictions. not self censorship and lectures. kendrick presents a struggle within but doesn't pretend to be holier than thou or preachy. he'd lose a lot of his audience if he leaned into the Christian stuff too much. a lot his audience are good people who happen to be atheist or Muslim or Hindu or whatever. keep the language broad and universal
Since when was his music not faith/god based?? XD do yall listen to music or just skim through it. There has not been one album where he wasn’t talking about god
I've thought about doing that - I'm just in between on how much time to put into the edits for now vs what I want to say. But I'll most likely do both!
What do you think of the new album and what do you think of his next direction?
I hate that you all say that he disappeared when there was a global "event" and he had 2 children and a tour.
Kendrick wants a balance atleast imo... And a space for creatives to thrive in the industry...
I don't think it will be completely faith based but more balanced
It will be about the culture. Not religion. He might touch on religious themes but overall it will be culture and community
