Great to hear Jose Carreras. It's easy to forget what a fine tenor he was until the leukaemia struck and he had to take a long time out to recover. He has raised huge sums of money for leukaemia research over the years: today around 85% of children and 60% of adults with leukaemia survive it, just like Jose himself. Luciano Pavarotti is my all-time favourite tenor, that warm golden voice like sunshine on a field of sunflowers in Italy. I have him just ahead of Franco Corelli on my favourites list. Placido Domingo is still going strong, lovely voice and what a handsome man too, as is Carreras who retired in 2019. Luciano was cuddly and adorable too. They wanted him to sing at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997 but he reckoned he would be too upset to sing properly. He also donated large sums to charity. Three great tenors who have brought joy to millions around the world. Thanks for posting this.
Many people wonder whether Carreras career would have been different without suffering leukaemia, but even before he was ill, he was forcing his voice with heavy roles. It's too obvious he developed an ear-killing wobble in the 1990s and no matter how respectable his will to raise funds for fighting leukaemia is, his performances made some younger generations (like me) perceive him as a tenor with an aged and broken voice and forget that, in his prime, he was a decent tenor to listen to. Anyways, with the rep he chose, he would have been past his prime in his 40s with or without leukaemia. It seems he wanted to follow Pavarotti and Domingo's steps even before this 3 tenors gig they repeated in the 1990s, so he was led to sing too heavy roles too soon. After all, even Domingo and Pavarotti were past their prime by 1990s, but they were 8 and 12 years older than Carreras.

Its like 3 0f God's angel chorus came to earth and sang to us mere mortals. Side note. My little dog is an opera lover he sits on the couch turning his little head from side to side to catch the notes. He just listens to these 3 giants. If a singer is not up to his standards he helps them, and he has a very rich little bsrratone. Of the new singers he enjoys the 3 young singers Domingo is mentoring, el Volo.

I was there, 25 years ago. I had never been to a concert in a stadium (opera outside, yes in my hometown Cincinnati and in Rome). My New York daughter invited us. Cincinnati's James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra! It was stunning. Domingo, Pavarotti and Carrera. Will we ever again have three such fabulous voices who can agree to perform together -- not just once but for a decade or more. They rekindled the classical world for many and opened it to so many more. From a very grateful listener.
Thank you for sharing this. I took my oldest sister with me to that concert. We had such a magical time. Our mother loved music and her favorite was to listen to Luciano Pavarotti. She instilled in us a great appreciation for classical and opera music. It was a gift to relive that night again. Thank you again!
