  • Despite being criticised for it's looks, the Alfa Romeo 75 was an important car in Alfa's history, as it was the last model released before Alfa Romeo was acquired by FIAT. Produced between 1985 and 1992, the Alfa 75 was commercially successful, with around 386,767 having been built by the end of production in 1992. The car was named the 75 to celebrate Alfa's 75 year of production and was styled by head of Centro Stile Alfa Romeo - Ermanno Cressoni in a radically different wedge shape, compared to the curvy earlier Alfa models such as the 105 series GTV, and the later GTV6, with which the 75 shared some running gear and engines. The 75 featured some innovative technical features, including an advanced for the time, engine management computer and perfect weight distribution, front to back, achieved with a rear transaxle arrangement, combining the gearbox & clutch with the rear differential.

Hi Frank - how are you? Thanks for watching, I'm only teasing to get a reaction from the viewers! Prices for 75's are already very high, especially in Europe, so it seems they are already firmly in the "classic" status!

To add to your description the 75 was essentially a radically facelifted Giulietta, using the same basic drivetrain and chassis architecture and even sharing the doors. Similarly the 90 was also an evolution of the Alfetta with a cosmetic makeover but similar underpinnings. The 75 came alive with the launch of the facelifted models in 1987, the 2.0 Twin Spark and more importantly for export markets the 3.0 V6 America were the game changers.

I actually had never a chance to see the old ones in my childhood as I was born in 83 and in Latvia, which means it was Soviet Union. The only resemblance we had to an alfa was an old Lada, the designs were copied from fiat and one of the actually looks a bit like old GT. So to me all these old cars still look fantastic, because the cars we grew up did not have all that extra equipment and the looks too. But having seen enough of modern and old cars in the 90s, one of course can develop his own sense of ''style''. Some people dislike Alfa Romeo for the looks, but I love almost all of them, maybe the 147 is the only one that looks a bit weird to me. And these old boxy Alfas like 75 and the like look great with a body kit, but even as they are, they look interesting. Those are classic cars after all. So far I had a 156 and the 2007 GT Q2, but my favorite was the 1998 156 2.0 Twinspark.

We had a pair of 75s many years ago - a 2L TS and a 2.5 V6 auto. Both the same colour, same interior and the same bodykit. Could be confusing jumping into the manual after driving the auto.
Bodyshell wasn't bad for rust on either. The auto suffered around the windscreen, which I suspect was the result of someone cutting the sealant out to replace it a scraping the metal badly so there was no rust protection.
Petrol tanks rusted. Had to replace one on the TS, which was made worse by having the tow bar mount running directly under it. Worth giving an extra few layers of paint and some underseal on the new tank (especially on the seam between the top and bottom).
The U shape handbrake was fine, and ironic that it has now been copied on some current car. Road tests complained it didn't have a glove box as they couldn't find it!
Still have a few bits for them. Pair of exhaust manifolds, mirror, etc.

Hi Katy, thanks for the comment and for watching. The title is just a cheeky way to get people to react - I actually think the 75 is a very cool car.Yes, petrol tanks are a common problem it seems, the placement of the pickup pipe joint, facing directly into the road muk thrown up by the rear wheel is a bit of a design flaw to say the least! I don't consider the 75 that bad and consider the Alfasud more of a joke design (actually having that whif of looking like an Austin Allegro), but being a complete Crosswagon nut I might be a bit off 😉 Aside from the fact that they called the SZ and RZ Zagato models "Il Mostro", I don't think that Alfa truly had an Edsel. There might be the worst of Alfa but to be honest the worst Alfa is miles better than some brands best looking cars. And in your case with a Busso? Come on! 🙂

Definitely the 75 is not the most good looking car in the whole Alfa Romeo lineup. The design was just a minor downside for being a product of Alfa's financial crisis era. But the mechanical wonders (very competent engines, unique drivetrain setup, driver-oriented ride and handling) compensated the 75's ugly looks. It's a compact saloon made for petrolheads.
