- How to soundproof a room for $20 is a popular video short that would have you believe that sticking 60 acoustic foam panels will successfully soundproof your room from noisy neighbors on the other side of the wall. If you followed his advice, you will be out $80 at least and will also be very disappointed with the soundproofing effectiveness of acoustic foam panels.
Acoustic foam and acoustic panels are not sound proofing material, they are sound deadening material. They will not block outside noise from coming into the room, it doesn't work that way. So I decided to make a reaction video of one of the most popular soundproofing videos on RUclips, where the information is wrong.

Glad I didn’t stop watching these videos of soundproofing and eventually got to yours. You taught me lots in the past 15 mins and I’m already going in a completely different direction then what I started with (in a good way). If not I’d probably do exactly what that kid did and end up disappointed for expecting more

To actually soundproof it, you're going to be taking the walls down to studs, sealing outlets with puddy pads, doing resilient channel, doing insulation in the interior walls and ceiling, double 5/8" drywall with acoustic sealant between them, acoustic sealant in base plates a minimum. Real soundproof rooms would have HVAC considerations as well
Well you actually can sound proof your room for $25 by instead of buying acoustic sound proof panels you buy insulation sound proof panels so you can’t hear from the out side.Hope this helped😄

Short version: acoustic panels are not sound proofing, they are sound reflection (I.e. echo) reduction.
If I can get $1 for each person who believes these Amazon foam will soundproof a room then I will be a billionaire overnight!
I know, it would be nice if the RUclips algorithm would know that as well and stop pushing these BS videos out to people.

You’d have to cover most of the room with it to be able to absorb enough noise. It would definitely help a bit.
You're arguing semantics between sound proofing and sound "deadening". When people say sound proofing they mean noise reduction. No one actually expects 100% of all sound being stopped.
Will the acoustic foam at least lessen the amount of noise that escapes my room?
I want to prevent noise from coming out of my room too. The walls in my house feel as thin as paper! I have 0 privacy
The acoustic foam panels will only deaden the sound in your room. It will reduce reflections and echo. You need to thicken your walls (In simpler terms) to really initiate soundproofing.

Cover up the cracks of your doors. The foam tiles are to fix the acoustics of your room so like getting rid of unwanted echos.
