      The difference with this is that the Benin bronzes are still to this day of priceless religious and historical significance to the Edo people. The bronzes are their traditional way of record keeping, and they are still of great religious significance as part of the ancestor worhship of the royal family. It would be the equivalent of having the vatican archives looted and moved to another continent.
      Plus a Dane wanting to see their historical artefacts in Sweden can travel there pretty effortlessly. For many Nigerians the visas, travel costs and most obvious of all the covid restrictions are totally preventing them from having any access to these artifects.

    People have some strange arguments in this comment feed. It may well be true that the objects are “more secure” here in Europe (in whatever post colonial country they ended up in). But we’ve documented them, we’ve learned everything we are gonna learn from them. What do they mean to us now? What significance do these objects have to Europeans? Trophies and memorabilia of their lost empires? I thought we were all trying to conveniently forget about our past atrocities actually. And I dare say, for the majority of the European population, they mean nothing. Yet this is not the case for the communities from which they come. The objects should be returned to the peoples from whom they were stolen. If they are then stolen again by someone else, that’s really not the problem of the European museums and institutions.
    I agree that being able to go to a museum in Berlin to view these artefacts, learn about these cultures and hopefully appreciate them a little better, is a potentially beautiful thing. But it’s also completely white privilege. The communities to whom these objects belong to should get to pick and choose exactly which objects they want to keep and exactly which ones they would like to share, and exactly how much we need to pay for the privilege of displaying them. Especially when you consider that the vast majority is simply hoarded in storage. I mean, why are you depriving someone of something they can use when you yourself have no use for it. Makes no sense.

    • @Chironex_Fleckeri
      @Chironex_Fleckeri 3 года назад

      Why did you write so much? It's more important that these objects are safe until Africa is ready to have museums. Have you seen how stable Africa is? Not at all. You're just talking about feelings. You want to be NICE. Everyone should he NICE. Everything can be NICE. Just because there's all his head-patting of Africans going on, it changes nothing about how much of a mess these countries are. They are priceless objects of human history. Europe is a safe place for them.

Let's fast forward to today, the situation of Syria has nothing to do with the Syrian people. However, it illustrates that countries are utilized as proxies in the ongoing 'war' between global empires. The civility/superiority you allude to be inherent in Germany led to two world wars and a holocaust. If you are incapable of appreciating the sanctity of life I believe art would escape you.

    These objects are priceless and irreplaceable. If the original country doesn't have a stable government and infrastructure to maintain them properly they will be lost to incompetence.
    Case in point, the Taliban destroyed the cliff statues Buddhas of Bamiyan. They're gone -- other regional conflicts have seen other items lost. Looting of mummies, urban encroachment too close to fragile structures (e.g. Cairo/Cheops), and just simple lack of conservation skills and funding.
    If they can't properly care for them, then no. They should remain in competent hands until such time that the original country can fund and host the items safely.

      My thoughts exactly. But these nations are almost like struggling teenagers. It's impolite to tell them what their country is really like, yet now is a terrible time to give Africa these objects back. They aren't ready for it

      Because they'll just be destroyed when the next wave of violence inevitably grips these countries. Look at the history of these countries. Civil War every 20-30 years? The destruction of artifacts by ISIS and the Taliban showed how bad this idea is

    Should the Mexicans who come to America, and send money back to Mexico, have to send their American dollars back to America? Asking for a friend.

      The Mexicans who own statues or other artifacts stolen from Washington DC should immediately return such property.

      @@rikulappi9664 Who said the relics in the Museums were stolen? Those things probably were a dime a dozen back in those days, and were traded for.

    Guys, you do not get what happens with returned artifacts. Those Africans will make money on art just by selling it to private collectors. The developed counties do preserve artifacts from looting.
