two things i love about these things.
    1) for lubrication of the mechanical kinematics, its most usually simply some oil fountain dripping and an oil catchpan at the bottom, unlike modern lubrications where all of these are encased and look neat and clean. because at the time you're more concerned about getting the engine to actually run rather than making it look nice and clean.
    2) the fact that all of these was designed on paper, calculated on paper using abacus or mechanical calculator, then fabricated without numerical control. meaning each part where tolerance is tight, they most likely oversize it, then slowly sand and grind it down to desired size, instead of in the modern era where we simply just cut at desired size due to how accurate our cutting tools are

What are the grasshopper legs going up and down where the piston rod connects at the cross head?

I believe they're pumps of some sort. I've seen a lot of mill engines with them but I don't know what they do either

Can’t answer that sorry but it’s an impressive machine and well worth a visit.
Maybe someone else knows can answer in the comments.

There's music in a video about steam engines, the person is likely clueless about that too.

Please be respectful when commenting. Christ it's just a video of a steam engine!
Received quite a number of quite hateful messages due to the video having background music. Please get a life people and keep all negative comments to yourself.
This is why I prefer diesel locomotives as the people are much nicer!

Could you repost this with no music so we can hear the engine?

    • @J0nnyGT
      @J0nnyGT  11 месяцев назад

      Sorry no,
Why not visit the site for yourself and enjoy the engine in person? This will also massively support the preservation gang at Ellan Road.
We are more focused on diesel hydraulic locos

@@J0nnyGT I am in the US, and too old to travel that far. No problem, there are other excellent videos of Ellenroad and other engines with natural sound. Didn't bother watching this one.

Brilliant - have a look at my other videos of Maybach diesel locomotives. Extremely interesting beasts which replaced steam

This is likely the most tone deaf video on youtube. I don't know why someone thought putting music in was a good idea for a video about steam engines. A lot of the draw is the sounds.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this video. It's really appreciated.
The goal of this video is complete. The music masks the sound of the engine making more people the taste and view of going seeing it for themselves and supporting Ellan Road steam engine.
We are focused on Maybach's diesel hydraulic locos so stay tuned for those.
      Thanks again.

@@J0nnyGT It doesn't help those of us that are thousands of miles away. 4000 miles in this case. It's a shame, the photography is great, but ruined by the music. I didn't bother watching the whole thing.
