Very interesting. Makes me want to go to the Stasi Museum whenever I’m next in Berlin. Mielke must have been very ruthless yet very capable to turn the Stasi into what it became.
When crossing the east/west German border to go to W. Berlin there was a sign which read so and so many km to Berlin Hauptstadt der DDR, so Alan they declared it there. Look forward to your video about trials that did/didn't take place.
Didn’t the Stasi manage to burn most of their files during the collapse of the GDR? I heard that the documents that survived were the ones classed the least incriminating. I’t would be very interesting to know to which extent they cooperated with the Baader-Meinhof gang for instance.
There were protests to stop files being burned, I think some Stasi offices were stormed. I think by now it is likely that most of their files will have been examined, although I know from my own experience that so many years after the end of WW2, there are still things being found in existing archives.
Wow Alan they detained you in 1982! Glad you were let go. Enjoyed your subject today. Thanks Alan.

The DDR claimed it as the capital but that was not recognised by the Allied powers.
Very interesting
Great video, Thanks!!
Those Stasi buildings are like the ‘Architecture of Intimidation’ of the Nazis saying ‘The State is big and you are small’.
Informative video about Stasi...(Secret GDR intelligence ) during the Cold War. Enormous buildings, are it's empty urban areas...? 🤔
Unbelievable structure they built for oppression...👍
Dark times...a brilliant related film: "The Lives of Others" -German film
